If you were chairing a recruitment panel, would you…?

Connect with LinkedIn with an unsuccessful candidate?

DH had an interview today for a fairly senior role, and this evening the chair of the panel has connected with him on LinkedIn. Would anyone do this with someone who hadn’t got the job?

Clearly I am looking for one specific answer here.

yes If i thought the candidate had potential for another job

Kanaloa · 15/07/2022 20:27

If you think he’s cheating on you it doesn’t matter what other people might do. There’s an innocent explanation for everything but it doesn’t matter if you don’t believe this is innocent.

fussygalore118 · 15/07/2022 20:27

Nope, but nor would I do that until I had offered the job to the person , tbh probably not even until they actually started...

Well, me neither, but this person clearly isn’t thinking like that!

Wouldn’t really apply in this circumstance. There’s only one role and the person isn’t exactly the employer.

I'd agree with this, if I wanted to link in with one of the candidates for professional networking purposes or I thought they might be suitable for another post that might be come up I might connect on LinkedIn but not until the post has been formally appointed to and the recruitment closed, you can never guarantee the successful candidate will accept the job, pass checks etc. it seems inappropriate while the recruitment process is ongoing.

Kana is on the wrong thread methinks. Laughed out loud and it’s not that funny. Maybe the heat is getting to me!

I am fairly sure no one is cheating with anyone here.

Whatever it takes to get the job

VerveClique · 15/07/2022 20:38

Maybe, if I thought they were good, even if not suitable for the job.

Either way I wouldn’t read too much into it!

Therealpink · 15/07/2022 20:40

I’d say he was being LinkedIn stalked and the guy accidentally hit connect.

This is entirely possible although wouldn’t you do that before the interview?

Ineptedness or emotional crapness all very possible.

I think it could be a good sign OP. Hope he gets it. Have they said when he should hear by?

There are very definitely no other jobs on offer. But I guess he could still have made a good impression.

Monday, so everything crossed over the weekend.

Ahh I wouldn’t read so much into it, if they’re in similar industries, mutual contacts etc then it’s sensible to connect.

They’re not though. This guy was a sort of independent chair who wouldn’t work with the post holder and whose day job wouldn’t really interact at all. They are in two different fields.

OP posts:
OooErr · 15/07/2022 20:56

Might’ve been just a mistake.
You don’t need any extra ‘are you sure’ dialog boxes, all it takes is a click of the connect button.
The guy may not even know!
I wouldn’t overthink it

tealandteal · 15/07/2022 21:01

Yes, after they had received feedback. They would still be a good person to be connected with even if they didn’t get the job as who knows what opportunities might be available in future.

Igmum · 15/07/2022 21:05

An unsuccessful candidate? Probably not. I would worry about how it would look to them. With a successful candidate I would wait until after the job was confirmed. Agree with the PP who suggested stalking and hitting the connect button by mistake, but do I think it's a positive sign? Absolutely. Fingers crossed OP

Startuplife · 15/07/2022 21:08

Could it be that they’ve agreed to offer him the job but the person doing so hasn’t actually got in contact yet?
I’d probably connect with someone I interviewed and wanted to hire but I might not know that our internal recruiter intended to offer them to role on Monday morning rather than Friday.

Startuplife · 15/07/2022 21:09

I definitely wouldn’t connect with someone I wasn’t going to hire. I’ve had a few LinkedIn messages and emails from unsuccessful candidates arguing that they should have got the role and it’s very awkward.

See, this was my thinking. I would run a mile from someone I was about to reject. However good I thought they were.
