Wedding flowers and veil - what to choose?

LoveGherkins · 11/07/2022 18:39

Sorry about a second post in a very short time. I need to decide on the veil and flowers for my wedding.

This is my dress:designerbridalroom.com.hk/bridal-atelier-pronovias-raciela-plain-off-shoulder-mermaid-crepe-wedding-dress.html

I really want a puffy veil. Something like this: www.etsy.com/listing/1211493090/ivory-wedding-bridal-veil-with-cut-edge

What do you think? Will this work with the dress? I mainly want it for the ceremony and the photos only so don't want to spend too much.

Also was looking into flowers. Are dried flowers a thing? It would be nice to be able to keep it afterwards. www.etsy.com/listing/1147401762/destiny-rustic-scottish-rose-calla husband will have kilt on with a bit of purple so purple would work. But would the flowers look ok with the dress? Would it be better just get fresh ones? No flowers at all?

The wedding is soon so need to start making decisions on both

Dress is sensational
I like both veil and flowers.
Will be watching with eager anticipation to see what others pair with this amazing dress!

Gazelda · 11/07/2022 18:45

The dress is gorgeous! Very classy and elegant.

I think the veil goes well.

But personally I'd go for fresh flowers. I think they'd look more luxurious than the Etsy bouquet.

RandomQuest · 11/07/2022 18:50

Love the dress, love the veil. The flowers look like they’ve been sat on a b&b reception desk since 1986. You need to do the dress justice and they most definitely do not. Go fresh.

The dress and veil are both stunning and will go well together, I'd go with fresh flowers though

sueelleker · 11/07/2022 19:13

You can get your bouquet preserved afterwards. magentaflowers.co.uk/

Northernlurker · 11/07/2022 19:24

Dried flowers go with hippy type dresses. You need a small sleek bunch of roses or similar with a dress like that.

Northernlurker · 11/07/2022 19:25

And that link is silk ie fake flowers

chiffchaffchiff · 11/07/2022 19:32

I had silk flowers from Etsy and they were amazing. They looked real in the photos and from a little distance, they cost a fraction of a real bouquet. The biggest surprise was that they weigh nothing. I took mine overseas for an elopement and left them with the wedding coordinators in case they ever needed a bouquet in an emergency. I still follow them on Instagram several years later and have seen them pop up in a few weddings.

Your dress is stunning - straight out of 1940's Hollywood. For me, the veil reminds me of the ones my aunts wore at their weddings in the 1960's and doesn't do justice to the dress. I would look at something that can be affixed to the back of your head, possibly as part of your hairstyle (using flowers to complement your bouquet) which then falls to the ground. I think that you need to try on a veil with your dress to see want really works together.
I like your flower choice.

MumUndone · 11/07/2022 19:49

I don't think the veil goes with the dress at all, it's a completely different vibe. As a pp says, the veil is quite 60s looking, which the dress is not. I think for that dress you need a long veil.

I agree.

I don't think the veil goes with the dress.

Love the dress

Definitely NO to the veil - this dress requires a long veil

Not a fan of the flowers.

But please don't mix that beautiful dress with the veil - doesn't work

JellyBellyNelly · 11/07/2022 20:02

Op, if you google dress with long train what kind of veil you’ll get plent6 of pictures as to that you should wear with it.

the style mentioned by letsgosew is what comes up in search results.

DenholmElliot1 · 11/07/2022 20:03

Mantilla veils are making a comeback - one of those would look gorgeous with that dress.

gogohmm · 11/07/2022 20:05

I personally wouldn't have a veil with that dress, it's amazing, doesn't need complicating. I would suggest thinking about fresh flowers but perhaps 4 or 5 simple stems tied rather than a full bouquet

JellyBellyNelly · 11/07/2022 20:06

@DenholmElliot1

yes. That style would be nice as well if placed on the back of the head.

RedLemonade · 11/07/2022 20:07

Totally agree re mantilla veil. I didn’t know that’s what they were called but that’s exactly what popped into my head when I saw your fabulous dress!

RedLemonade · 11/07/2022 20:09

Reminds me of Charlotte in SATC- soft flowing veil would be fab.

Wedding flowers and veil - what to choose?
Chocolatetwirl · 11/07/2022 20:11

Your dress is so classic and beautifully simple with those gorgeous covered buttons and shape, a puffy veil that sits over the top of your back might detract from that and hide your back and shoulders when your dress is designed to show them off. I'd maybe try a really simple cathedral veil in illusion tulle with a "barely there" look to show off every detail on the back and the shape of your gown, as well as the opportunity for amazingly dramatic photos. I wasn't even going to have a veil but tried a cathedral veil with my crepe sheath gown (not dissimilar to yours) and it completely changed it. We also got lucky with a light breeze and the windy veil shots are amazing. Definitely worth trying a couple of different styles with your dress if you can.

A PP mentioned flower preservation above. If you're going to do that, definitely do some research. I had lots of white/ivory flowers with hints of purple in and when I approached magenta flowers (linked above) was advised white flowers don't dry too well (they discolour brown) and the ones I had chosen were too big to make the items I wanted so had to look for alternative preservation ideas.

NewYorkLassie · 11/07/2022 20:12

I think that stunning dress needs:

  1. a long, plain veil with a piped edging. The dress is very smooth lines and I think it needs a veil that compliments that.
  2. fresh flowers that are quite simple (again, for the clean lines) but with a pop of colour. There’s no contrast on the dress as all, no texture so I think something simple but bold colour would work well. A deep purple would be beautiful I think.
viques · 11/07/2022 20:17

That is a lovely dress, but I think faux flowers will look awful and the ones you posted are horribly fussy, you need something simple and elegant, a few ribbon tied calla lilies maybe. And I would give the veil a miss or if you have to have one then a very simple lace one that just covers the face and that you can take off straight after the ceremony.

gluenotsoup · 11/07/2022 20:21

The dress is beautiful, as is the veil but the two don’t go together. Would you be wearing anything else in your hair? It needs a more simple, sleek elegant veil rather than a fun one.
I don’t like the flowers, go fresh, seasonal, elegant, not fusty.
Keep us updated, you will look beautiful 😍

LaLaLouella · 11/07/2022 20:23

I would go for simple, dramatic flowers with that dress - a few red long stemmed tied roses? Cala Lillies?

Why do you want to preserve your flowers? Wedding Flowers under a glass dome always gives off Miss Haversham vibes to me... it's one more thing to dust and for someone to feel guilty about chucking out in a few years time...

Umbrella1 · 11/07/2022 20:31

Omg the dress is to die for, but its a dress who don't needs a veil ! Flower wise simple but lots of green foliage

Please send a pic of pic of you on your big day love a beautiful bride

Yodaisawally · 11/07/2022 20:34

I commented I. Your mother thread. Dress is fabulous. It doesn't need a puffy veil, too much. I'd go simple.
