Any tips to stop towels going hard when dried on the line?

If I dry towels on the line they go hard and crunchy and everyone moans! I don’t really want to use the tumble drier on a gorgeous day like today. Any ideas?

Tell them to wash their own towels.

Just tell everyone to suck it up

Tumble drying in this weather is ludicrous

I have solar panels so feel absolutely no guilt about using a tumble dryer on sunny days. I hate crunchy towels so always tumble dry them. They're the only things I do tumble dry in fairness....

I've also heard that fabric softness is the worst for towels..... those are done.....

Another vinegar person here 😉

I put just a quick glug in. Have been doing in every wash for a couple of years and my clothes have never smelled of vinegar. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Another one who uses white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner, not just any though, i use the stardrops spray one. Regular vinegar has a smell but stardrops doesn’t

I like a good hard towel…absorbent and stays up. Braw.

It's not the drying you need to change, OP; it's the moaning of the household members. Complaining about the touch of a clean, sun-dried towel is the ulimate in petty, fussy wimpiness.

Ha…yes, this.

Turkish towels
do the job, light, easy

Do you mean the Hammam towels? I've been dithering over getting some for ages.

You shouldn't really use fabric softener on towels as it affects the absorbency and as you've found, doesn't really make any difference in terms of the feel once they've been line dried anyway.

I use fabric conditioner on towels and they are perfectly absorbent. They don't go really soft, but they are certainly softer than if no fabric conditioner is used - and are only line dried as I got rid of my dryer.

Modern energy efficient dryers use very little energy. MN is obsessed with them being awful but it helps me function. Maybe consider that hanging washing up isn't easy for everyone.

Agree vinegar is better than fabric softener in general. Have never had clothes smelling of vinegar but you need white vinegar, not Sarsons.

Most mainstream fabric softener is made of tallow - animal fat. 🤮

Just got some towels in from the line. So crunchy I could hardly fold them. Perfect!
