Any tips to stop towels going hard when dried on the line?

If I dry towels on the line they go hard and crunchy and everyone moans! I don’t really want to use the tumble drier on a gorgeous day like today. Any ideas?

I’m the same as you, begrudging putting the timer drier on today, but 10 minutes in the tumble drier is all it takes to stop crunchy towels, or me having to iron certain clothes.

Please tell me more about how I can avoid ironing with 10 mins in dryer? 🙂

I like crunchy towels misses point

Same here! They dry you far quicker then soft fluffy ones do. Although I do like a big soft fluffy towel to wrap myself up in if I've had a bath and just want to lay on the bed and relax whilst I dry off

diddl · 10/07/2022 14:45

Line dry & then tumble try!

Wtf is the point of that!

I line dry & the towels don't get hard or crunchy!

Same here. Much better than those overly soft towels that just move the water round your body and don’t absorb it.

Actually that's precisely why I line dry towels rather than chucking them in the dryer with the rest of the laundry 😁

Romeiswheretheheartis · 10/07/2022 14:51

My mum always has soft towels and has never owned a tumble dryer, I don't know how she does it!

RandomMess · 10/07/2022 14:55

@Romeiswheretheheartis please would you find out?

I would love to have nice towels all the time regardless!

Lorrymum · 10/07/2022 14:59

We have very hard water and I've tried all sorts different ways to have soft, line dried towels. I have now given up and simply rub the towels together to fluff up fibres when dry. Doesn't take long and worth the effort if you like soft towels. Good exercise for upper arms!

twilightcafe · 10/07/2022 15:03

Use fabric conditioner, then line dry.

I always use fabric softener but doesn’t seem to help. I will try drying them for 10 mins and then hanging them. Hopefully that will help.

Never use softener on towels. It affects the absorbency.

Use white vinegar and air dry and they’ll fluff up beautifully.

I really don't see how hand washing dishes can use more energy than a dishwasher??

(I don't have a dishwasher anyway)

Cervinia · 10/07/2022 15:08

I am also on the crunch preference for towels. Nothing beats the exfoliating experience of a lined dried, fresh smelling, crispy towel.

Bluetrews25 · 10/07/2022 15:18

Thanks for that info @SW1amp
I will be using my dryer over winter when the house is going to be freezing as I will only have the heating on for 5 mins a day. And I don't have a dishwasher. The dishes are clean enough to eat off. I'm not operating with the knives so no need for sterility here.😉

Me too. They dry you better and feel more bracing.

rwalker · 10/07/2022 15:26

Love a towel that do rough it sands u down

tbh total waste putting a dry towel in dryer to soften it especially with price of electric

Soontobe60 · 10/07/2022 13:22

Do the opposite - line dry them, then give them a quick spray with plain water and chuck in the drier for 10 minutes.

This.

And no fabric conditioner. It makes them less fluffy and less absorbent.

mydogisthebest · 10/07/2022 15:51

Fabric conditioner is one of the reasons towels go crunchy. White vinegar is good to use and no the towels don't smell of vinegar unless you use tons of it.

I don't use anything but washing liquid and my towels don't go crunchy. I wouldn't mind if they did though as they dry you better.

No one should be using a tumble drier in this heatwave, that is criminal

Whiskeypowers · 10/07/2022 15:55

I love a good crunchy towel they really dry you and exfoliate at the same time. Bonus!
I cannot stand those awful veloirntype ones that leave some sort of lint all over you and don’t dry you.
I notice if I give my towels an extra spin they don’t go as crunchy on the line ……

Stuckandinamess · 10/07/2022 15:59

Crunchy fresh towels are up there with fresh sheets in my humble opinion- sorry, no help whatsoever for you!

CoalTit · 10/07/2022 16:05

It's not the drying you need to change, OP; it's the moaning of the household members. Complaining about the touch of a clean, sun-dried towel is the ulimate in petty, fussy wimpiness.

As I understand if they use less water at hotter temperatures to make use of the steam. To hand wash the same amount as a fully loaded dishwasher would require more water.

I put the dishwasher on every two days on average and it deals with a couple of days worth of washing up in one run.

I think the water usage might get mixed up with the energy usage somewhat though.

I iron my towels with a high steam setting and they become nice and fluffy

I don’t iron clothes. I’m not about to start ironing towels!

poshme · 10/07/2022 16:59

I have found my people! I also love crunchy towels. Can't stand the ones which move the wetness around and don't dry you.

And the thought of using a tumble drier today!!! No wonder everyone has high electricity bills. I haven't used my drier for months (disclaimer ido live in the south& am Aware that line drying easier here)

Faints at the idea of ironing towels!

Bunnycat101 · 10/07/2022 17:50

I hate crunchy towels so would be keen to know if there was a way of line drying and getting nice soft towels.
