Alternative drinks to alcohol

Morning
After another night of waking at 3 am and not being able to sleep for 2 hours I am convinced it's linked to having a glass of wine in the evening. I don't drink often but over the last few months whenever I've had a drink I seem to wake in the night and I'm sick of it!

So any recommendations for what alternatives people drink when they aren't drinking but don't fancy water or tea? I don't want to drink anything too sugary just wondering if there is anything out there!

Is this just an evening in? I just don't have anything. My OH has a decaf coffee.

swedex · 08/07/2022 08:55

Evening in or out!

Fevertree Ginger Beer. Not too sweet and quite spicy. I don’t like sweet drinks and I avoid anything with artificial sweeteners which means I have very little to choose from nowadays.

Rainbowqueeen · 08/07/2022 08:56

Sparkling elderflower. Or any flavoured sparkling mineral or soda water. Soda water with a squeeze of lime

MarmiteWine · 08/07/2022 08:59

Elderflower cordial mixed with tonic water or soda water, drank from a wine glass.

Or just a nice cup of tea or two!

Swedesareneeps · 08/07/2022 09:00

Dash water - it's sparkling fruit but not sweet

orion678 · 08/07/2022 09:03

I'm a fan of alcohol free gin and tonic. There are a lot of very good options on the market now. Also, if you like beer, alcohol free beer is basically the same without the after effects. I personally tend towards just fizzy water on days I don't want to drink. Sometimes with a bit of elderflower cordial in. Nosecco is decent as well, but I'd avoid any and all alcohol free "wine" - it's vile.

I would say your sleep problems are almost certainly related to the alcohol. I gave up 3 years ago and sleep is one of the many things I've noticed a huge improvement in.
For me, I like the non alcoholic beers - there are loads around now, don't be fobbed of with becks blue which is rank! Non alcoholic g&t, are fab and I've even found some decent non alcoholic wines, but have to get those from a specialist website.

Out of curiosity, where do you find decent AF wines? Everything I've tried is awful, and I love wine but don't always want alcohol along with it!!

Some great ideas thank you.
I'm also wondering whether it's the start or peri menopause too as I'm 42, but I do think the alcohol isn't doing me any good. I had one glass of rose last night and I felt bleugh

@ororion678 i get my wine from drydrinker.com they've got a really extensive range that you won't find in supermarkets. My favourite is called sinzero, the sparkling one in particular is brilliant!

DinosaursEatMan · 08/07/2022 21:37

Another vote for elderflower cordial with sparkling water. Also Shloer and cloudy lemonades

DinosaursEatMan · 08/07/2022 21:39

Forgot Robinsons cordials too. There’s a nice lime and mint one.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 08/07/2022 21:42

Fever Tree Rhubarb & Raspberry tonic water. Best chilled.

reluctantbrit · 08/07/2022 21:47

Same here, I am a bit older and peri menopause is hitting hard.
I already drink fizzy water with juice/lemon during the day and really want something different with a meal or just sitting down with a book in the evening.

I tried the Zero Alcohol Cider from Taylor's and was pleasently surprised.

Will look at the drydrinker website as well now as I love wine and as other PP said, the ones you find in a supermarket are just awful.

CookieMomster · 08/07/2022 21:50

Water (sparkling or not) with slices of lemon/lime, fresh ginger and some mint leaves. I have a carafe where I put that and fill it up with fresh water during the day. Cucumber and strawberries work well, too.

lifeturnsonadime · 08/07/2022 22:04

Another vote here for Fevertree Ginger Beer otherwise sparkling water.

Sadik · 08/07/2022 22:18

Yep - meno + alcohol (especially wine) = terrible sleep here. There's loads of really good super-low alcohol beers available now. I look for the ones that are 0.5% rather than 0.0%, the teeny bit of alcohol doesn't affect me, and the taste is much better.

My favourites are Shipyard Low Tide and Brewdog Punk alcohol free, the Adnams Ghost Ship 0.5% is also very good.

Alternatively Fever Tree Cucumber tonic water is very palatable & not sweet at all.

LizzieMacQueen · 08/07/2022 22:20

Fresh mint tea, with full leaves and a dash of honey.

The fever tree ginger beer mentioned by PPs is very good but has recently shot up in price.

Could you be pregnant?

😂😂😂😂😂😂 it would be some sort of godly intervention if I was!

No definitely not pregnant. If anything it's the beginning of the end pretty sure I'm Peri meno

I found this in peri too. I now take magnesium tablets and it does help.

inappropriateraspberry · 09/07/2022 07:20

Soda or tonic water with ice and lemon or cucumber, mint etc.
There are loads of lovely soft drinks around now if you don't want alcohol.
Or try an alcohol free lager with lime - very refreshing.

Passthecake30 · 09/07/2022 07:22

Water with ice and a chunk of lemon

Oldraver · 09/07/2022 10:38

My favourite is Cawstons Rhubarb but the Elderflower or Apple are good too

I also add a bit of sparkling water

Beanomatica · 09/07/2022 14:12

Do you like lemon lime and bitters? I've bought a bottle of proper angostura bitters and some good quality lime cordial, and keep a good supply of lemons, lemonade and sodawater so can mix to my personal preference. Feels like a treat and very easy.

I also like tonic water with a sour cordial, like pink grapefruit or sour plum. Yum.
