So embarrassed. Got confronted today.

Pulled up to park in multi storey, and when I got out of my car this lady comes at me very aggressively! No idea what was happening. Managed to get out of her that I was following her and hand signalling and shouting at her and being very aggressive and that her daughter was a nervous new driver and I was a horrible bitch.

I was actually just singing along to my music, very enthusiastically. I can now see that in a rear view mirror that might look as if I’m shouting and gesturing at the car in front. Lesson learnt!! She was laughing when I explained.

Be wary fellow mumsnetters in case this happens to you!

You shouldn’t be embarrassed but she should be!

Bloody hell, awful to aggressively confront someone innocently singing along to the radio. I hope she had the decency to apologise.

BlueChampagne · 07/07/2022 16:39

Glad she saw the funny side. Don't beat yourself up about it.

She did! She was mortified when I explained. Lesson learnt for both of us!

Glad all ended well!

(keep both hands on the steering wheel though, yeah, no need to be finger clicking and doing that pointy pointy thing whilst driving)

Justleaveitblankthen · 07/07/2022 16:53

😂 What were you listening to?

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 07/07/2022 16:59

Gesturing? You are using your hands while singing too? Grin

nickthefox · 07/07/2022 17:01

Brilliant 😁

I had a man do that to me. He was on a bike, wife on another, and he had a toddler on board.

I parked in supermarket car park, 20 year old convertible with the top down, and a really angry man came over and was so angry he absolutely scared the shit out of me. Apparently I had looked him in the eye and mouthed obscenities, tried to kill him and his child, I was an awful woman and he was going to report me, he had my number plate.

When he stopped I turned my car stereo back on...The Boys Are Back In Town blared out. Who doesn't sing along to that?

His wife waited for a silent moment and said "I told you" and dragged him away.

I felt really sorry for her and the kid, but he was terrifyingly angry.

I had someone like you in front of me the other day - she kept sticking her arm out the window and waving it about. I had to brake several times as I thought she was signalling to turn right/slowing down, it was most distracting Hmm Keep your hands on the wheel!

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 07/07/2022 17:45

Thanks. Ear worm has changed

Keep your hand on the wheel and your eyes on the road...

I don't think there is any lesson for you to learn OP.

There is always a risk someone could misinterpreted anything we do in public but I don't think we can live our lives worrying about it. The woman who approached you made a mistake, it happens. I'd be more concerned that she was aggressive and called you a bitch, those things don't just happen, she should have been mortified.

I'm not sure a nervous new driver would be reassured by a passenger getting so heated whilst sitting beside them.

Bumply · 07/07/2022 17:55

At the beginning of lockdown I had a neighbour in my stairwell confront me almost in tears about my boys fighting so loudly and aggressively that it was shooting her anxiety through the roof and she wasn't going to survive lockdown if they carried on

At that point I only had ds2 aged 18 living with me, ds1 being at Uni.
I explained the noise was just ds2 over enthusiastic playing of online games and asked him to keep it down and his door firmly shut.

Thankfully this reassured her and and she was able to calm down.

We need to see a video...

Well, keeping her hands firmly on the wheel while driving might be an idea.

I remember sitting at traffic lights at a crossroads one lovely summer morning - sun roof and all the windows open. Whitney Houston’s ‘ I wanna dance with somebody’ was on the radio, and I was right into it, singing at the top of my voice and giving it loads with arm movements - in my head I was Whitney !! Didn’t see the police car at the head of the queue on the opposite side of the road - two policemen laughing their heads off at my antics and as they passed me, one shouted ‘encore’. Never been so embarrassed in my life !!

Honeyroar · 07/07/2022 18:25

Be careful. A colleague got booked by the police for driving with undue care and attention when they saw him dancing and singing in the car! (not sure exactly what he eas doing, but I know they filmed him and played it back. He said it made him, and them, giggle).

LightSpeeds · 07/07/2022 17:57

We need to see a video...

This is literally why I can’t have a dash cam. I couldn’t handle any footage of a possible accident being played in court to a soundtrack if me trying to rap.

I had a quite funny/slightly embarrassing car encounter today - I live on a parked-up road without many passing points and another driver kept coming rather than stopping near the end where there are some places to pass (prob not familiar with road). So I had to start reversing, but I am terrible at it, I can never seem to get the car straight and central in the road so I'm always having to adjust so I don't go into parked cars and it takes me ages, plus I get really stressed. Luckily, the other driver was a lady (you can be a bloke would have been a right twat about it) and, noticing I was stuggling, waved at me politely that she'd reverse. And, like it was just falling off a log, she zooms straight back the middle of the road in 2 seconds flat. I am so bad at reversing for any distance! 😳

Elphame · 07/07/2022 18:30

I was once stuck in traffic behind a car full of 5 women. We were going nowhere anytime soon and they were dancing( whilst seated obviously) and singing along with their music. The car was actually rocking from side to side!

whynotwhatknot · 07/07/2022 18:31

dont worry ive done it -worse had though was someone laughing at me

ValBiro · 07/07/2022 18:40

I had a woman tailgate me so hard on the A40 dual carriageway in Oxford just before it joins the M40 that I was too scared to move into the left-hand lane. My heart was literally in my mouth how fast and how close she was driving behind me and I am an experienced and confident driver. It was so unnecessary and aggressive.

Sorry, nothing to do with the OP really but people can be such dicks on the roads!

A weird journey overall actually... Later on the M40 the variable speed limit suddenly dropped to 20 mph despite there being no traffic and then one of the signs said "oncoming vehicle". On the M40! I mean...wtf?! I kept waiting for a high-speed car chase the wrong way down the motorway but the speed limit eventually said "End" and that was that. Glad to be home!
