Has anyone taken Norethisterone before

going to take to delay a period for a holiday, but been reading online it affects your mood badly and makes you depressed. My periods are not that bad so don’t know whether it’s worth taking it or not. Anyone taken this before?

I just took it for a week to delay mine. I definitely cried more than usual and felt like I was retaining water. I came on 2 days after stopping the tablets. It's worth it if the bleeding is a huge inconvenience but the side effects for me were nearly as annoying.

Jenn500 · 05/07/2022 06:15

Thanks. My periods are heavy but not that painful

Yes I took it for about a week a few years ago to delay a period for holiday. Absolutely no problems or side effects (and I normally have heavy periods) and my period came within a couple of days of stopping taking the pills. Wouldn’t hesitate to do again.

Yes, took it once for a wedding abroad. I was so bloated and swollen and had such horrible moods.

I’d only take it again if there was really a dire need.

OldSpeclkledHen · 05/07/2022 06:24

Everyone reacts differently to meds... can you try it before you go?

ThatsALotOfPassionfruit · 05/07/2022 06:28

I’ve taken it with no ill effects at all

Firstshoes · 05/07/2022 06:31

I always take it for a holiday/period clash. I've never had a problem with it.

Bert2020 · 05/07/2022 06:32

It all depends on your body, my mum got ‘held’ at an horrific pmt level and never took it again. I get slightly more emotional but not to have to worry about getting in swimming with the kids is worth it for me.

SEJ1789 · 05/07/2022 06:34

Yes just took it in May no issues with my mood was a bit bloated though. But got pregnant while taking it so watch yourself with that one. Was my mistake really and wish I just dealt with my period.

Jenn500 · 05/07/2022 06:39

Thanks for the replies, no don’t have time to try it out unfortunately, I’ve already taken the first pills now so should probably carry on, just not sure if it’s worth it as I want to be happy

I've taken it loads of times with no side effects.

Prezperez · 05/07/2022 07:09

Yes, I’ve taken it with absolutely zero side effects.

StStephensTower · 05/07/2022 07:11

Same, taken loads of times with no
noticeable side effects

courtrai · 05/07/2022 07:20

No side effects here; just a pain to remember it 3 times a day but worth it

Thestoppedfan · 05/07/2022 07:22

I’ve taken it and it made me all bloated which wasn’t great in a bikini. It also made me nauseas which meant there was no sex anyway. I’m not great with hormones though so I don’t know what I was thinking!

Mykittensmittens · 05/07/2022 07:25

i’m in the same boat, as is DD for a holiday in 3 weeks.

GP has now given DD Provera as an alternative to Norethisterone which is slightly less effective but has less side effects.

I can take neither as peri, and periods can be irregular but very heavy. Instead my practice nurse suggested tranexamic acid which can reduce bleeding by 60% and therefore if it turns up while I am away I could cope with tampons and not need night time pads plus period knickers as I currently do.

however getting hold of tranexamic acid is another matter. It’s now available OTC without prescription but no one stocks it. I posted asking if anyone has purchased recently and if so where from, but I got no replies.

PinkButtercups · 05/07/2022 07:31

Yes. Only for a short period whilst on holiday. No mood swings but I tend to be a moody twat sometimes anyway.

HappilyHadesBound · 05/07/2022 07:32

Myself and my DD(15) have used it recently and had no side effects at all

Afterfire · 05/07/2022 07:35

My dd aged 19 has taken it a few times to delay periods. She thinks it’s great and has had no side effects at all.

Twixxed · 05/07/2022 07:35

I've used it with no side effects (and I struggle generally with my mental health). Everyone is different though

BackT · 05/07/2022 07:35

Awful. The pain of the period afterwards and the bloating and mood were not worth it

JM10 · 05/07/2022 09:11

I've used it for a 2 week holiday with no side effects at all.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2022 09:12

I've used it many times and haven't had any side effects.

fghj149 · 05/07/2022 09:53

I got it prescribed this when I was going on holiday once so I could go in the pool and avoid my period. I’d give it a try and see how you are emotionally after a day or two.

Personally I was a nightmare to be around on that holiday and it seemed to be down to the norethisterone. I stopped it on the last day, my period came within about one hour and I felt so much better instantly.

HariboHippo · 05/07/2022 10:00

I’ve used it a few times with no side effects whilst taking but a horrific period once I stopped.
