What do I do now?!
it had crept up to £40 with the basic package, no broadband, HD or anything.

we don’t really watch any sky channels. I liked my sky plus box, but we can’t pay £40 a month anymore.

i want to pause and record tv, as well as download stuff from catchup.

has anyone got any suggestions

Following! My DH has the full sports package but has come to the realisation that £95 a month (wtaf) is ridiculous.

angelopal · 02/07/2022 16:55

We got a Freeview box and Disney +. Already had Amazon prime so more than than to watch.

Springandsummerarecoming · 02/07/2022 16:55

Following too. We are paying £101 😳 but does include broadband. We need this money for other things. Virgin media were saying that they could do a basic package for £40 but we need to look into it more. I think we’d be happy just with freebies Chanel’s and Netflix but we would really miss the planner as rarely watch stuff in ‘real’ time and record a lot of things.

Springandsummerarecoming · 02/07/2022 16:56

Sorry freeview channels.

SausagePourHomme · 02/07/2022 16:57

if you don't mind an initial outlay, you can get a humax freeview DVR box. no subscription but it lets you pause and record tv - cheapest one is about £125 but will pay for itself in 3 months.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 02/07/2022 16:57

Our free view box cost about £200 three years ago. It records up to four channels simultaneously, you can pause and rewind and it seems to let you watch on demand as well ( never bothered with that so can’t say). Amazon fire stick for the rugby.

MarshaMelrose · 02/07/2022 16:57

I bought a Manhattan Box. Records and has catchup. I love it but it's not cheap. I'm sure they're are cheaper set top boxes.

MarshaMelrose · 02/07/2022 16:58

Manahattan has Prime on it too if you're subscribed to that.

APurpleSquirrel · 02/07/2022 16:58

We dropped Sky a few years ago & haven't missed it. We have Netflix, Prime & Disney+ & just watch the rest on catch up.

TitilatedOcelot · 02/07/2022 17:01

If you have a smart tv with free view, you might be able to plug in a hard disk into the USB port which will allow you to pause/record live tv.

BigFatLiar · 02/07/2022 17:05

If you have sky+ you can cancel sky and ask for a freesat card (small charge £25ish) which should allow you to get all the freesat channels. If you have a hdmi connection you can get nowtv or similar and get the channels you want on a short term basis.

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 02/07/2022 17:17

My sky broadband was up for renewal, got sent an offer for Internet and sky q for 35 a month, also had an offer for sports for 20 a month.

I do see adverts for this offer on Facebook a lot, might be worth calling and seeing what they can offer you.

Billybagpuss · 02/07/2022 17:21

I phone sky every 18 -24 months and say I don’t like the price and am looking elsewhere and what can they do about it. Every time I’ve got more features for less money.

PlanetNormal · 02/07/2022 17:25

It’s highly likely that in a few weeks time Sky will start bombarding you with emails & letters offering you super-cheap deals to ‘come back’. In my experience they usually offer an 18 month contract at the cheap deal. I’m a Sky Platinum VIP and I currently pay less than £50 per month for TV including full Sports package, phone line & broadband.

jessieminto · 02/07/2022 17:30

We are paying over £90 for Sky with all the sports + Disney + Prime+ 2 other sports channels. £135 a month. I've recently signed up to IPTV and trialling that, intend to cancel sky when the contract is up. All the other sports are already cancelled and we've just kept prime for the delivery side of things. I know it's wrong but needs must.

jaundicedoutlook · 02/07/2022 17:38

Sky are total wankers - you won’t miss it. Just get a Freesat or Freeview box, or an HDD to plug into your TV for live recording.

We cancelled a while ago after our deal ran out and the call centre people were totally unable to follow a reasonable instruction on which channels to cancel and which to keep. Spent 2 hours on the phone over two calls and they still couldn’t or wouldn’t get it right. Just ended it after that. DH grumbles occasionally when there is some sport on…

JerkintheMerkin · 02/07/2022 17:42

I got rid as well. I now have two Roku boxes. They are absolutely tiny but I'm in love with them. I have Netflix, NowTV (which is Sky TV without a million useless channels) and Disney through them which is alot cheaper.

twordle · 02/07/2022 17:50

Just reduced our sky bill by £65- it was obscenely high and is still just shy of £100 a month. Feel trapped with them as we have so many films we've bought saved on the box- is there a way of getting them off before leaving sky?? DH does watch sky sports but other than that we wouldn't miss it..

glamourousindierockandroll · 02/07/2022 17:55

All we have is a smart TV with apps and subscriptions. I only watch live TV on Iplayer (free) and occasionally ITV Hub (free) but everything else I watch on demand via 4OD (free) Netflix (paid) and Amazon Prime (paid). Oh and Disney (paid)

I never feel that I miss anything from not having 'normal' tv.

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 02/07/2022 17:58

This might help someone

Cancelled my Sky + subscription
dutysuite · 02/07/2022 18:01

We cancelled sky a few years ago after it went up to about £145, we recently signed back up again and pay a lot less however I know this will slowly creep back up and then we’ll cancel again and go back to roku and now tv.

TwoBlueFish · 02/07/2022 18:10

Youview box or similar to allow you to record. Can always get NowTV if you still want to watch some of the sky shows.

pinkpirlie · 02/07/2022 19:05

I cancelled mine in 2017 and like you, thought I would miss it. Didn't. Haven't paid for a TV licence since either as we only use streaming services. TV isn't hooked up to an aerial.

Give it a couple of months before investing in something else. I would bet that in that time you'll have forgotten you even had sky before.

Dontlickthetrolley · 02/07/2022 19:11

Mine went to £40 for the basic package, so I phoned to get a deal. Am now paying £25 for the basic package including kids plus box sets and £7 a month for sky cinema til next June. No Netflix, Disney plus etc here so happy for £32 a month, especially now more new films are coming out so sky cinema is getting better.

RoseMartha · 02/07/2022 19:20

We dont really use it a lot, sometimes I watch it I guess but not every week. I have basic and Netflix. But if I didnt have it there would be nothing as the freeview thing only picks up abt three channels none of them useful. Ie a couple of shopping channels and one music channel.
