Cancelled my Sky + subscription

What do I do now?!
it had crept up to £40 with the basic package, no broadband, HD or anything.

we don’t really watch any sky channels. I liked my sky plus box, but we can’t pay £40 a month anymore.

i want to pause and record tv, as well as download stuff from catchup.

has anyone got any suggestions

Any films you've purchased are still yours - I think you have to access gem through the app or website. We definitely have some & xmcan still access then despite not having Sky anymore.

MiniMoosey · 02/07/2022 19:23

Wait and see what sky offer you to tempt you back. I always “cancel” mine when the contacts up and they give me a great deal. Currently paying 80 a month but that’s for literally everything they offer. And Netflix and Disney included too.

Featuredcreature · 02/07/2022 19:33

I cancelled mine a couple of years ago, was paying £94 a month for not very much, the only things I watched were the Simpson and friends Hmm. I had it for over 10 years at that point. Since getting rid I watch very little tbh, what I do watch is usually on less than reputable sites ahem. Fuck it I'm on benefits and have less than zero to spare on entertainment.

EvilPea · 02/07/2022 23:38

These are all great suggestions. I’ll do some googling tomorrow. Thank you.

i did expect them to offer something, but they didn’t. It took ages to get through, so I wonder if there’s lots of people after deals.

What's so great about Sky anyway ?

I have Netflix, Amazon, Disney + and Now TV which has Sky Entertainment shows on it and that still doesn't make me want Sky esp due to extortionate cost.

I'm genuinely curious as to why people have Sky

We’ve just had it for years so have everything set up, know how it works etc.
it’s the familiar rather then being great

I have it mainly for the sport. We pay £102 a month and that includes a second Sky Q box, full sports package, Netflix and broadband. I looked at Now TV but at the time they didn't have HD and if I wanted to watch the cricket it was more expensive than Sky.

ItWillBeOkHonestly · 03/07/2022 08:55

I will be cancelling sky in August when my contract is up. I've got Prime and pay £3.99 a month for Discovery+. Even better as I no longer watch or record life programmes (and don't watch BBC), I've also just cancelled my TV licence too. A win all round!

Roystonv · 03/07/2022 09:05

We are stuck with them for the golf. No other option anywhere that I know of. Dh loves it and we are frugal elsewhere but it means they have us captured. I do negotiate about once a year; they must be inundated with calls atm

EvilPea · 03/07/2022 09:13

I cant believe the slow drip drip on some of these accounts where you end up paying £100 a month or so. It’s madness really isn’t it.

some of these little recordable boxes mentioned above look quite good. I’m also not entirely sure what happens when they deactivate the card and what continues working. The boxes look better as they have all the on demand stuff my box doesn’t have (mines the original white box)

I cancelled Sky and bought a free view Humax box, it records, pauses, rewinds, series links just like a sky box. Have a Amazon fire stick for Netflix and Hayu

Pashazade · 03/07/2022 09:17

I got rid of ours a couple of years ago and got a set top record stuff box. We've since stopped using that and I don't miss it a bit. We have a decent tv so have all the channel apps on there. Use iPlayer, NOW (all the sky channels but you can drop in and out in a monthly basis if you choose, plus they do excellent deals) pay for Netflix and have a shared family account for Disney, as each account can have up to 8 users. I have Amazon prime anyway but have topped up with Britbox. So whilst I'm possible spending similar to the sky package we had there is non the faff with stopping and starting again, much more convenient.

DIMooney · 03/07/2022 09:23

You’re free!! Took me years to finally get rid of Sky as I was worrying about finding a replacement to record and rewind.

We’ve got a BT YouView box. Cost about £120 and I bought it through TopCashBack in Currys. Paid for itself in 3 months. I also have a ChromeCast (£30).

The YouView box does the recording and rewinding, it also has some apps built in (BBC, ITV, All 4, 5, Netflix etc) then I use the ChromeCast for casting Disney + or YouTube from my phone.

I have a lot more to watch now than before and I don’t miss Sky one bit. It’s been about 3/4 years since I got rid.

Thisbastardcomputer · 03/07/2022 09:34

Have a look at BT tv, our bill is approx £53 per month. Including phone, broadband, Netflix and Now. They provide a BT TV small box which it runs through and you can record multiple channels on.

We pay line rental in a one off payment each year, so not included in the £53.

I stuck to BT because open reach are responsible for the the network and the other providers of phone or broadband charge a fortune for anything that's goes wrong outside.

Suzi888 · 03/07/2022 09:44

They usually ring back and offer a deal.
If you claim benefits tell them as I am sure someone said they will slash the price.

Disney plus is £8 a month but you can get it cheaper if you can afford to pay for 12 months in advance.

I only really watch Netflix. We have the whole package plus multi room/HD and pay around £95 a month. DH cancels all the time, we never renew. Occasionally go without it (we don’t watch much tv in summer).

CornishTiger · 03/07/2022 09:58

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen where did you find that please.

CornishTiger · 03/07/2022 10:02

Does anyone know. Do the sky channels come through the dish to the box. What impact does the internet have.

we have the worst ever internet. When we were with BT and had a youview box I think the tv needed the internet.

Now we are with sky the internet is a bit better ( it’s still bad) and I think that’s because the tv comes through dish.

if that’s the case then I’ll stick with sky.

EvilPea · 03/07/2022 10:24

The tv comes through the dish @CornishTiger your on demand and catch up is internet.
if you still have an aerial, your free view tv or a digital box will still pick up the signal.

we had terrible internet when we used the same provider as our neighbours and we kept knocking each other out. The minute we changed it was perfect.

Nidan2Sandan · 03/07/2022 10:31

Now TV, its sky for a fraction of the cost. I think the basic pass is £6.99 a month but I've never paid full price. Just tell them you plan to cancel and they will offer you it cheaper. I usually pay around £3 a month.

CornishTiger · 03/07/2022 16:07

Thank you @EvilPea that’s what I thought.

we want to stay with Sky broadband as despite BT saying same lines etc our internet speed is better ( still total crap though!) as I think the majority of channels come through dish leaving the internet free for other things.

Oblomov22 · 03/07/2022 16:09

If you want football like Dh does you are held to ransom by sky.

justcantgetenough · 03/07/2022 16:45

I was a sky customer for 20 years but this year I left due to them wanting £75 for sky entertainment, broadband, Netflix. Did get it down to £50 but still too much.

So I left for BT for £33.99 a month for 24 months including bt box for recording, Now tv entertainment , Netflix, full fibre internet and Brit box free for 6 months. Unfortunately I don't think this offer is on anymore.

Don't say loyal to Sky they don't care, not had any offers to temp me back. I don't miss sky and prefer the menu off BT and watch mainly via catch up

Unfortunately it is sport that takes the price up, it's about £34 a month through Now Tv but sometimes has offers. Also never pay for sky movies, I get movies via Now Cinema, there's always offers, I've not had movies for about a year but just got offer off £1 for 3 months.
