DD (14) won’t watch Buffy because I’ve told her she should watch it too many times.

How foolish is she?

I have now given it up as a lost cause and need to work out how to play it with DD2 (11), so I get to watch it with her instead.

Ah the cutting your nose off to spite your face approach. Love teens and stubborn people.

Can you just idly put it on when you are DD2 are in the same room, shouldn't take too long for her to notice, and once you've noticed it you can't help but love it. Either that or find one of the episodes when angel or spike are topless a lot and start with that one Grin

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 02/07/2022 13:18

My DD did that with Harry Potter from the age of 7 Grin She cracked at 10 and thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. It's good that they're independent thinkers, right? You just have to sneak things in front of them and let them 'discover' them themselves.

DD didn't learn from it, I was years telling her about the His Dark Materials trilogy and she did exactly the same. Now she lives in Iorek Byrnison t'shirts.

Bhu · 02/07/2022 13:21

Ridiculous children. She has just binged watched all of Stranger Things and loved it. I had a last ditch attempt and told her that the Stranger Things (gang of plucky wisecracking teenagers fight various demons from a hell mouth beneath their town) was basically the plot of Buffy but she was having none of it.

Depends on the child I suppose but my DD watched a few episodes with DH and declared it quite dated and wasn't impressed with the acting. She hasn't watched it again. I didn't get it first time round either and it didn't get any better with a rewatch.

(and topless boys don't really appeal to my gay, feminist DD so that isn't exactly a draw either!)

I recommended Stand By Me to her and she wasn't impressed. Now that made me quite sad!

Bhu · 02/07/2022 13:31

I don’t think we’ve successfully shared any of our cultural touchstones with them, as everything looks so dated. We usually just enjoy the shiny new things with them instead.

Yeah, DS won’t read The Secret History , The Magicians or Rivers of London because I’ve gone on about them despite me knowing he’d love them. He loved Enders Game which I recommended to him when he was younger and more malleable but won’t read the sequels. I keep putting books in his room but he won’t touch them Grin

Ive also tried sneaking on Buffy and the X Files but neither DS is that interested. It worked with Dr Who but I suppose they are more modern and ongoing.

BuffyFanForever · 02/07/2022 13:51

Don’t worry she’ll watch it eventually and will be kicking herself at having missed out! Then you get to talk about it again. Next DD get it on when she’s in the room and she’ll be hooked in no time ☺️ . How long should I wait to get my toddlers watching?! 😂

Popatop · 02/07/2022 13:53

It’s got the most lovely lesbian romance with Willow and Tara though?! First lesbians I saw on tv!

Bhu · 02/07/2022 14:10

You’ve got a couple of seasons of Willow mooning over Xander, and then the lovely Oz, before you get to that though.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 02/07/2022 14:16

Try the movie "Now and Then" if she is the independent sort.

Bhu · 02/07/2022 14:18

Mention of Oz has made me go looking for this

This thread is basically a poorly disguised attempt to talk about Buffy, seeing as DD will not oblige.

I did a rewatch 2020 of buffy and angel

For Shame, I skipped season 6 buffy. As it was depressing!

SushiGo · 02/07/2022 14:34

Literally bingeing it right now.

Kids are slowly getting sucked in to the occasional fun episode...

Super easy to watch the episodes of Buffy and Angel back to back to back I original air order - which is so worth the effort if you've never done it.

GenevieveLenard · 02/07/2022 14:35

Not sure about that graph Bhu 🧐 yes, Giles is fantastic, but I have a new appreciation for Xander too 😍

AppleHa · 02/07/2022 14:44

I didn't have a TV when Buffy series one was showing so used to walk from Shepherds Bush to the South Bank to watch it in my friend's student accommodation. That's dedication. Then I remember really disliking Spike and Dru when they were first introduced and I didn't watch another episode until series 5, when I was a/ intrigued by the introduction of Dawn and b/ realised how very very wrong I had been about Spike. Then became obsessed, bought previous series on eBay and joined a yahoo discussion group dedicated to the amazingness of Spike Grin

EHopes · 02/07/2022 14:47

Season 1 wasn't a hit here.

We had to agree it was too dated and start with season 2.

Interestingly I have a 14yo boy who has really enjoyed the first few seasons of angel after arguing against buffy.

Soubriquet · 02/07/2022 14:49

I can’t count how many times I’ve watched Buffy tbh

”they got the mustard…..ouuuuuuuuut”

EHopes · 02/07/2022 14:50

I won't watch with miss 12. It's leading to the forbidden fruit thing where she begs me to let her see and I say she's too young.

I have watched the musical episode more than once with the kids in the room. They have to suffer me singing the songs, they might as well hear the original a few times.

This is genius! Best parenting top I’ve heard!

Buffy was great show, apparently there was ment to be another season, although willow as powerful witch omg 😲, would of like more of the initiative group, although I would of thought Maggie Walsh would of studied the slayer more, rather than how she did.

Hawkins001 · 04/07/2022 09:25

It was good how they brought spike to the good side, not sure about the character of dawn being added. Oz was ok, tayna was cool bless her.

Hawkins001 · 04/07/2022 09:27

I was never keen on the vampire version of angel.

TreePoser · 04/07/2022 09:30

Ha ha funny! My son wont watch Dark because I recommended it, even though he loved Stranger Things. If I recommend something it must be good. If "Leo, Theo or Dylan" recommend it, then he'll watch.

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 04/07/2022 09:55

Both my kids are like this when I recommend things to them, it's so annoying!

DD resisted Harry Potter for years, refusing to read it or have it read to her. Then she started when it was the only kids' book available in a holiday rental and was immediately obsessed 😁

DS was exactly the same with Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy until I think I actually bribed him to try it. I barely saw him that day and the next day he sheepishly requested the rest of the series.

I managed to get both to watch Firefly by mandating it as a Family Watch and they grudgingly admitted it was good.

Sadly, very sadly, I went too soon with Buffy and got DD to watch when she was 12. A good age for some kids, but she's quite sensitive and found it scary so was put off, although she did laugh a lot.

Neither will read Good Omens, despite loving the TV version 😭

Lastly, I love the Buffy attractiveness of men chart posted above, how true is that?! 😍 Giles
