DD (14) won’t watch Buffy because I’ve told her she should watch it too many times.

How foolish is she?

I have now given it up as a lost cause and need to work out how to play it with DD2 (11), so I get to watch it with her instead.

My daughter did this with the hunger games.
I knew she’d love it but she resisted for years. Then binge watched the whole lot in one weekend once she’d given in and watched the first.
(I would have rather she read them but I’ll take any small win!)

I was like this with Terry Pratchett. My mum, dad and bro raved about it. Regularly rereading and talking about it.

I was totally sick of hearing about it by the time I got to the age of reading it.

I never have read them.

I love reading but generally have very different tastes to the rest of my family. Which is why I'm careful with my sons. DS1 will read any recommendation. DS2 won't. And almost on principal won't try books DS1 loved.

So I take him to choose his own.

For TV, neither of them watch our recommendations although after a lot of resistance they loved Indiana Jones and Monty Python and the Holy Grail

I always prefer the books first due to more detail

It’s got the most lovely lesbian romance with Willow and Tara though?! First lesbians I saw on tv!

want to watch with my daughter (for many reasons) but also that one. It's soo good

My DD refuses to listen to bands I like because I like them 🤣 she does like one but that's ok because she stumbled across them herself!

Love the graph!

The Spuffy shippers are holding on in there!

Chattycathydoll · 04/07/2022 16:15

Omg, my DP does this to me- I’m the refuser!!

He’ll go on and on about me watching something to the point where I don’t want to because the idea of it is annoying, as it reminds me of him annoying me about it! And I know it’s daft because all the recommendations have been amazing when I finally have watched them… it’s just that the more I’m told how great it is the more annoying it gets. So the longer it takes me to actually watch it. And one of those suggestions is Buffy!!!

SparklingPeach · 04/07/2022 16:19

This isn't a new thing OP. My mum says that she noticed whenever she recommended a book to me I wouldn't read it. I was an avid reader as a child/teen, so I must have gone out of my way to avoid these ones!

I love buffy but it is very old and I'm not surprised your dd doesn't want to watch it. Also in retrospect JW has been found out as a mega creep whose feminist credentials are seriously compromised.

Rewatch it yourself And let your dd choose her own shows.

Personally I love buffy and think it looks fresh still now and not as dated as friends, x files etc from that era.

Off to listen to "I've got a theory"

I just missed out on the Buffy craze when I was growing up - I tried watching it on Disney+ recently and thought it was awful Blush sorry!

I love their song together in OMWF.

The only series I’ve successfully introduced the dcs to is Pingu.
Tried and failed with Buffy and various great ‘80s films - I still hold out hope that dd will eventually watch The Breakfast Club…

I would skip season 1 if you want to try it now - the rest of the show is not so dated - but honestly, for a lot of these shows I think nostalgia is part of loving them still as adults.

I don't have any real expectations that my kids will enjoy them as much as they will enjoy something new, made to reflect their generation. I still give it a go occasionally!

Changechangychange · 05/07/2022 23:50

DS had been unimpressed with everything I’ve showed him so far - except fucking Dogtanian, which I only put on as a semi-joke to demonstrate that we didn’t have Paw Patrol in the 80s.

You just have to watch their stuff. I really like Penguins of Madagascar and RescueBots. Not quite so into School of Roars and Dino Dana. He seems to have forgotten about T-Rex Ranch, and I have hidden it on Prime.

oobedobe · 05/07/2022 23:54

My DD1 (13) watched one episode and thought it looked dated. I've suggested it a few times since but no go.

I found these updated Buffy graphic novels at the library so I am pushing those right now to draw her in.

We are doing Stranger Things now so some progress.
