How much is a wedding cake?

Getting married next year and have started looking at wedding cakes.

We plucked a random figure out of the air of £400 for our provisional budget.

I have fallen in love with a cake maker and her prices start at £575.

I am trying to convince my DP that this is reasonable and actually our guesstimate was way under. He wants to keep looking and find something closer to budget.

So what do wedding cakes cost roughly in your area? This is 3 or 4 tiers.

Mine was about £750, but my lovely cake maker had hand made flowers to match my by bouquet to go on it which cost a large chunk.

Depends what sort of thing you want.

Maybe if it's too high for your budget you could decide if you want to release some money from somewhere else? An amazing cake was non-negotiable for me but I didn't care so much about invitations so we bought them from Hobbycraft.

My mum made a 3 tier wedding cake for our wedding. It was traditional fruit cake and the ingredients alone cost £200. It did serve over 100 people plus we kept the top layer for our Christmas cake.

I can imagine if we had bought it then it would have easily been £600.

I was going to say something very similar to this!

Would love to see the one you are interested in - can you post a picture?

I make wedding cakes, £400 would be a nice three tier fully iced cake with a few sprays of sugar flowers or other decoration. If it’s lots and lots of flowers and/or other things like sugar figurines etc then yes I can see 500+ isn’t unreasonable, it totally depends on the amount of decoration and the time it takes. You’re paying for their time not the amount of cake

It depends what you want, there's online suppliers under £200, we have local bakers around that price too. Some supermarkets have suitable cakes for smaller weddings. If you want something very specific it comes with a higher price tag

BertieBotts · 30/06/2022 12:54

We reused MIL's Christmas Cake that nobody ate GrinGrin then SIL bought a plain iced cake from M&S to make it two tier, cost us about £20.

I do appreciate that's not really what you're looking for!

Fenella123 · 30/06/2022 12:58

Nobody (including you on the day) will care about the fancy sugar decorations. It's a set of tiered iced fruit cakes. Make it yourself.

Honestly, with the prices of food and utilities rising fast, cake prices are also going to go up alot.

Depends on so many factors
How big? How many guests?
What kind of decoration, what kind of cake
Maybe look around at a few options rather getting too fixed.

I was lucky enough to receive my cake as a present from a patisserie friend of the family but even 16yrs ago it would have cost us about £500 to buy it
Ours was a 3 tier absolutely gorgeous chocolate cake (light and creamy Italian chocolate) with white chocolate curls on exterior
Each layer was raised on hidden columns with real Red roses on top of each layer (to match my bouquet)
It served 120 people

We also had a cheese wedding cake for the evening reception

All of both of them got eaten.

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 30/06/2022 13:01

M&S wedding cakes are beautiful! I'll try and find a picture of mine. Lovely quality and cheaper than most wedding cakes I looked at. I had a 3 tier one, fruit cake base, middle layer vanilla sponge and top chocolate.

MrsFionaCharming · 30/06/2022 13:03

Ours was the m&s one that you stack yourself. We decorated it with Lego mini/figures.

It was a really great cake and saved us loads of money, plus we picked a different flavour for each tier.

I don’t think they do that one anymore, but Waitrose entertaining also had one.

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 30/06/2022 13:03

This is the one.

And sorry I've just looked and M&S have stopped wedding cake orders at the moment 😞

That is a gorgeous cake.

TunaSalad · 30/06/2022 13:17

I am happy to pull the money from elsewhere in the budget ie the wedding dress, I am more than happy to buy a sample sale dress rather than a bespoke dress, just can't get DP past the point of - "how much! For a cake?!"

They are so pretty and this lady must spend hours making all the pretty flowers.

Will have to negotiate an absolute max budget with DP and consult with her, see if she can make something to fit our budget.

I have seen on tv where they have had a crazy showstopper cake which is iced polystyrene apart from the tier they cut... then a more normal cake is chopped up in the kitchen and brought out for guests

ProseccoStorm · 30/06/2022 13:46

My mother made our cake. 3 tiers, icing, fruit cake.

It was lovely, I'm glad she made it, and I'm glad we didn't spend much on it as honestly no one spends more that 15 secs looking at a cake.

I honestly can't remember any cake from the many weddings I've been to.

pastaislife · 30/06/2022 13:53

M&S don't do wedding cakes anymore sadly! :(

Ours is going to be about £500 for three tier, semi naked cake.

kiwiandcherries · 30/06/2022 13:57

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 30/06/2022 13:03

This is the one.

This is lovely! I hope you can convince your dp to go for it, especially if you are willing to move around money within the budget so it's not costing you more overall!

Heronatemygoldfish · 30/06/2022 13:58

I remember looking at cake costs, thinking no way and signing up for a DIY course. Great fun, and even with the course, a cake stand and all the accessories, my whole 3tier cake was less than a hundred. OK, it was a while ago but shop prices back then were about £300. And I got a new skill/hobby.

Favouritefruits · 30/06/2022 14:04

My cake was going to be over budget so we opted for the big bottom layer to be made from a polystyrene block instead of cake, still looked fab and there was too much cake still if anything.

Jenjenn · 30/06/2022 14:16

Ours was 300 10 years ago. 3 tiers all different flavours and the venue agreed to serve it as dessert. They cut it all up nicely, added bowls of cream and cheese platters. The guests enjoyed the "dessert buffet".

Supercalesomething · 30/06/2022 14:33

We paid £180 for two tiers and sugar flowers. I fell in love with a different baker who exclusively does wedding cake and her sugar flowers look life like but she quoted double that for the same size and detail/decor plus delivery. We couldn't justify it for such a small wedding knowing we'd have loads leftover. It does feature quite a bit in our photos though so definitely worth picking someone whose cakes look amazing. Our chosen baker was a far smaller and less established business and also local to the venue so didn't charge us delivery. We had a tasting with her and she didn't disappoint.

Imissprosecco · 30/06/2022 15:10

Yikes. I'm eternally grateful that a family member made ours for us as a gift. We wanted novelty rather than a fancy cake though.

Not cake related, but check your florists quote if you got it a while ago. The price of flowers has shot up and we ended up getting fake ones instead

Monkeybutt1 · 30/06/2022 15:19

I can't believe how much people spend on cake! We had a cupcakes tower with a large one for myself and DH which we scoffed with champagne in our room after the wedding!
I can honestly say I can't remember any cakes from any wedding, aside from a naked cake which looked amazing and so different
