£310 PW, one room in shared flat, en-suite with small double bed.

Would you pay his much for private student accommodation?

Lots of students seem to be booking AirBnB in for the Unis near to us.

If you only have lectures 2 days a week and the accommodation is that much, I can see why now!

That's more than my mortgage on a 5 bed 4 bathroom detached modern home 😳🤯
Fuck that my kids are going to uni where they can live at home!

*2 days of lectures a week

Thats ridiculous money! Who could afford that😵‍💫

I think we have been spoilt with DS1, his Oxford Uni accommodation has been relatively cheap and he can stay in halls for 3 years of his 4 year degree. His accommodation is basically paid by his minimum maintenance loan and a very small top up.

DS2 is going to UCL and I think he said £200 a week for 39 weeks! That’s going to bite a bit! Still cheaper than that Manchester accommodation though!

somewhereovertherain · 25/06/2022 07:09

That’s nuts.

dd1 - Nottingham £110 a week
dd2 - Glasgow £140 a week

both for next year and minimum loan.

jay55 · 25/06/2022 07:16

In a shared flat? Blimey can get a studio in London for that.
Imagine you could get a pretty fancy flat in central manc for that sort of money.

diamondpony80 · 25/06/2022 07:41

University halls here are a lottery type situation and DS didn’t get in. The accommodation we were looking at starts at £250 a week and probably goes up to £300+ for better rooms. Renting privately would be the better option but there’s very little accommodation available.

Bloodyel · 25/06/2022 07:44

I live and work in Manchester. I live in a professional houseshare and it's 490 per month including bills. Saving up for my own place.
Personally I wouldn't pay that much for uni accommodation, there will be cheaper options and the money you save will be more useful than an ensuite. Unless you're completely wadded then of course fritter away.

Tentpegsandtantrums · 25/06/2022 08:20

I honestly don’t know how they justify that price. They’d be better off booking a room every night in a Travelodge!

Tentpegsandtantrums · 25/06/2022 08:26

Also, if the average salary in the UK is somewhere around the £30K mark, and you’re already paying your own mortgage and bills, how on earth could a parent afford to spend that much on one or more children going to uni? Accommodation alone could easily be the best part of one parent’s salary. It’s just not feasible!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/06/2022 08:36

The new ones near me all have karaoke rooms 🤔

Enko · 25/06/2022 08:37

Pretty normal. I'd say. Dd2 looked unto halls for her 3rd year it was more expensive than renting a flat share (as she ended up doing)

Enko · 25/06/2022 08:38

@Tentpegsandtantrums It's a disgrace

Not to mention cinema rooms and gyms!

The ones that cost that much are aimed at the large contingent of private school kids who go to Manchester.

They charge it because people will pay.

The Oxbridge accommodation situation is so good

I was shocked when I found out it was more than £35 PW tbh!
I’m stuck in 1991! 😄

🤣 likewise! It is shocking.

I lived in a shared student house - I didn't want to do halls - when I went to Manchester in 1993. £35pw, I believe, for bedroom and shared living areas Inc bills.

My son lived at home when he went to university - the fees are just extortionate.

RampantIvy · 25/06/2022 09:17

I must admit that DD had one of the better halls with en suite bedrooms when she was in halls, but it was £134 a week, now £144 a week (Newcastle). She is in a flatshare now paying £94 pw plus bills.

sashagabadon · 25/06/2022 09:20

There are some very posh halls in London charging more than that. I see them as for rich international students rather than U.K. students. They are also mixed in terms of university the residents go to so I would think less sociable for that reason. There’s a lot of private operators getting in on the student accommodation gravy train.

balalake · 25/06/2022 09:22

100% not.

Onthegrid · 25/06/2022 09:26

That is more like the price of a private hall, look at Vita Student.
having put our DC through 4 university courses it is the top end and we have done both campus unis and city centre in all types of accommodation, the good, the bad and the ugly!
From experience most private halls are international or mature students and they can be very nice but a different vibe to uni halls.

SarahSteedman82 · 25/06/2022 09:30

That's crazy imo, my mortgage is only £600 per.month!

BetteDavies · 25/06/2022 09:35

Owens Park Manchester - Happy Days! Then a shared house in Fallowfield for £50 a month. Son paying £170 for halls in Leeds which I thought expensive.

EntertainingandFactual · 25/06/2022 09:48

Yes, it is a private hall!
My DC isn’t staying there! 🤣 As much as they would like to!
