£310 PW, one room in shared flat, en-suite with small double bed.

Would you pay his much for private student accommodation?

That’s ridiculous!

Cuckoo48 · 24/06/2022 22:59

What student has that amount burning a hole in their pocket?

Private halls with lots of facilities, gym etc? These attract a lot of international students - especially Chinese. I don't know about in Manchester but certainly true for London. Money no object.

OompaLoompaa · 24/06/2022 23:03

No we had a 6.5k per year limit per DC.

Going back 25 years but mine was £40 a week.

That's insane.

Nat6999 · 24/06/2022 23:13

Which university is that for? I looked at Sheffield when ds was thinking of going & a studio apartment was less than that.

ZaraSizeMedium · 24/06/2022 21:47

No. We’re paying £165 a week for DS for a similar room and I thought that was steep!

Does that include bills?

Similar - with free mold in the shared bathrooms. Mind you the standard of accommodation has improved dramatically since then, some of the ones that the uni I just left as a mature student have for rent are more like a blooming hotel in the level they're done out to! The standard of campus coffee has also improved massively as well thank god.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/06/2022 23:17

When I went to uni it was £12 a week GrinGrinGrin

University halls is shockingly expensive. Thankfully DD is doing a degree apprenticeship from September and her employer will pay for accommodation while she's studying! We don't have that kind of cash to spare and there's no way she could earn enough from a part time wage to support herself. It really is taking us back to the 1930s when university was out of reach.

That's amazing. Lucky DD. Smart girl.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 24/06/2022 23:19

My eldest will be paying £140 p/w. That’s all bills, with her own en suite.

whatsthestory123 · 24/06/2022 23:23

my son has just done 4 yrs at Salford Manchester he was paying approx £140 a week
one 4ft bed desk/storage etc and own bathroom and share the kitchen/front room with 4 others

Manchester has huge amounts of building going on and alot of new acommadation have you had a good look?

whatsthestory123 · 24/06/2022 23:24

sorry all bills included but did buy a small oil heater as the CH was rubbish

whatsthestory123 · 24/06/2022 23:30

my son has had ro get into debt doe his Masters but i did become his guarantor

im surprised so many parents pay for the accom and tuition, very lucky kids for a parent to be able to afford all the costs

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 24/06/2022 23:30

My daughter went to Manchester.

Her Loan ( not fees obviously) was £3250 p.a.
Her accommodation was £5250 p.a.

We paid the difference plus living costs.
And no, she couldn't find a job as there were two unis and a couple of H.E. Colleges all fighting for the same jobs.

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 24/06/2022 23:36

I remember when new halls opened just near Owens Park when I was there and we were all shocked that they wanted £42 a week for a room, but it was one of the first to have en suites.
I was paying £124 a month for my room in a shared house in Fallowfield.
But I now hear that the Owens Park tower is all closed off and “condemned” 😮 Fond memories of the Friday nights in there and the OP Bop…..

Henerlo · 24/06/2022 23:38

These are all private developers. The international upper middle class who study in the UK can afford it, city councils okay the developments because it eases pressure on the local housing situation. The people who lose out are the domestic students from poorer households, but nobody is too bothered about them beyond utisiling them as vessels for tokenism.

Henerlo · 24/06/2022 23:39

*utilising

Pythonesque · 25/06/2022 00:15

There's quite a lot of private student housing gone/going up round here too. Occasionally I've looked them up, and been equally horrified how expensive they are. Selling them based on lots of fancy features that the students probably don't need / could access via their university anyway ...

DD has applied for cheaper end accommodation for where she's headed and we're crossing our fingers!

dontyouwishyourgirlfriendwas · 25/06/2022 01:59

No chance! As a pp said you can get a studio flat for less than that which I would find preferable (if I had that kind of money, which I don’t)! It must be quite luxurious for student accommodation. You can get a nice room with an en suite in London for way less than that.

But I suppose if people can afford it then that’s their business, and it does free up the cheaper rooms.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 25/06/2022 02:30

My share of the mortgage is £200/month, or it was as it's paid off now.

DS2 is going to start this year, but as an independent student. I've requested he do it nearby to save money 😂

Tiani4 · 25/06/2022 03:17

That's so expensive! And it's Manchester ?!

So my DS is going into 3rd year in a city Uni in the north, very similar costs to his friend at Manchester Uni

Living in fully catered uni student accomodation halls was about £130- 160 per week- the higher costs were for those with their own en-suites shower and toilet. .

Living in self catered student halls was about £106-120 p week

Every room had a bed wardrobe, drawers and a desk. None were in poor condition (unlike in my student days...) but some more posh (new builds) and some little bit tired in decoration but still not bad!

DS moved out of halls in second year and rents a room in lovely shared house for 8 (near city centre, no mould , nice facilities) was £120 per week with all utility bills included (& CT but lease they signed says not allowed anyone not a student living there)

Be warned private LL require a guarantor to sign for each student, a deposit AND private student LL rental is for July to July so there's that "4th term" 3 months from 1 July to 1 Oct which student maintenance loan doesn't feel like it covers - as that's paid in 3 instalments Oct, Jan and Apr. Student actively has to set aside (or save from PT work) the money to cover rent in summer holidays for house/flat you're privately renting for the next year. Where as uni student accomodation is paid by student for end Sept to July only- (unis often hire out accomodation through the summer which means they don't pay for their student accomodation over summer holidays when they are at home with you! My son does as it's private year long lease)

My DD is going to a south England city Uni (not London) and student accomodation varies but choices include some uni accomodation blocks of beautiful flats sharing between 8 per flat for between £105-130 per week self catering. That includes cleaners once a week (who do checks so students can't be too messy/dirty) So not dissimilar prices at all. Where we live my friends dtr paid about £10 a week more & also £30 a month to uni for secure parking for her car.

I don't know anyone paying £310 a week (unless it was private accomodation in London!!) That's more than double usual student cost!!

Most student accomodation is sharing with large numbers of other students but single rooms. It's all part of the sun! I can see how if your DS was looking for a flat for two or 3 privately that will be more expensive but it doesn't make economic sense.

Travelledtheworld · 25/06/2022 03:24

Some overseas students happily pay that much.....

mjf981 · 25/06/2022 03:45

Thats almost 50 quid every single day. Wow. I don't know any students who would be able to swing that without very rich parents..

sashh · 25/06/2022 05:59

I think I'd be investigating the local Travel lodge.

bowlingalleyblues · 25/06/2022 06:42

I paid £26 a week in 1997. It was a hovel though with no central heating, no washing machine and often no hot water.
