Which Ring?

anonnancy · 23/06/2022 20:47

I have decided to buy myself a ring as a “to
me, from me” gift for securing a big promotion at work.

trouble is I can’t decide which ring to buy. I do need to go and try them all on to see which suits me best, but these are the ones I like so far … which is the nicest? I am looking for something that doesn’t look like an “engagement ring” style , a little bit different and of course, pretty and sparkly!

this isn’t something I would typically do and I NEVER buy myself anything worth any sort of value really, so I feel like I really want to get it right.

I wear an engagement ring which is white gold cluster, but the ring I will buy doesn’t have to be white gold as I will be wearing on my right hand.

help me pick which ring?

thank you!

I love the first one. It is beautiful. The other two look like engagement rings.

caringcarer · 23/06/2022 20:53

3rd one.

UndertheEagle · 23/06/2022 20:54

I like the first one too. The only thing I would say is that you need to be careful with opals. They can split really easily. Need to keep them out of water.
I do love that ring though.

Op have a look at www.gemporia.com

UK family company, wide range of styles & brilliant prices. Authenticity certificate comes with every piece.

coodawoodashooda · 23/06/2022 20:59

I like the first one too.

anonnancy · 23/06/2022 21:00

@UndertheEagle thanks! My mum is so superstitious and said I shouldn’t buy myself an opal as it’s bad luck?! Never heard of that
one before but I love opals x

First one

CheshireCats · 23/06/2022 21:06

Don't opal's scratch/damage easily?

sunshinealwayscomesback · 23/06/2022 21:11

First one easily. It's beautiful. The other two are absolutely engagement rings.

Squills · 23/06/2022 21:13

I likes the third one. I wouldn’t choose a ring with opals as they are fragile - certainly far more fragile than diamonds and sapphire.

Anonmousse · 23/06/2022 21:19

Im a jeweller so I always like to look at a thread about jewellery or rings!

I think the first one is the nicest.

Opals are more fragile than other stones, as pp have said and I wouldn't necessarily recommend for an engagement ring or something you would wear everyday (I've also heard they are bad luck, but I guess it depends how superstitious you are...?)
...or if you like sapphires, could you get one the same style as the first with a faceted or cabochon sapphire as the centre stone instead of the opal?

Thursa · 23/06/2022 21:27

The 3rd one is gorgeous!

RedCarsGoFaster · 23/06/2022 21:27

I much prefer number 2!

Have you considered having something made or looking at a smaller jeweller with that budget? You can get some amazing things from, say, Emily Nixon who makes sea-scape inspired rings or Woodfords Jewellery who have gorgeous gemstones etc? Or even an antique / pawn shop if older styles could be your thing.

I find Instagram a great way to find independent jewellers (and clothing companies) away from high street names.

meadowbleu · 23/06/2022 21:30

On personal taste none appeal, sorry. I certainly wouldn't be paying new prices on the high street as you just don't get value. Based on your pics would something like this suit you?

I'd go looking at vintage rings, go for something more unusual.

This is also pretty

The disadvantage with some vintage rings is whether or not they can be resized, so look out for that.

WRT opals they are a very soft stone and easily chipped or damaged, which is where the bad luck legend came from. If you do like opal, the pale, milky ones are much cheaper and the ones with fiery streaks of pink or green 'fire' are more prized.

3luckystars · 23/06/2022 21:33

I don’t think any of them are that nice really. Maybe they are nice on though, but they just don’t look like celebration rings.

huge congratulations on the promotion!! I hope you find something lovely and joyful!

genie10 · 23/06/2022 21:37

The first one is lovely.

SunflowerGardens · 23/06/2022 21:40

Absolutely yes to buying a vintage ring especially if you're looking for something like Opal. You could get something really amazing for your money.

The second two remind me of Princess Diana's engagement ring.

poorpaws · 23/06/2022 21:48

Definitely not the first one as opals are very bad luck and I don't like to even go near them. I know several people who had Opal engagement rings and went on to have the most horrendous relationships and then divorce. Tbh even if i didnt find them unlucky I don't like the look of them.

The second and third rings are lovely. The second one is my favourite.

KendallRoysRabbit · 23/06/2022 21:49

I like 1 & 2 but also agree that you should look at vintage.

Gazelda · 23/06/2022 21:52

I love the first one. It's an unusual style and has a classy look.
But I've heard the superstition about opals, depends if that bothers you.
Next time I'm in the market for a ring, I'm going to go for vintage. I think I'd get more for my money and it's feels better eco-wise.

SunflowerGardens · 23/06/2022 21:55

Here's a platinum sapphire and diamond one recently unsold at auction that's a bit less formal

FGSWhatNow · 23/06/2022 21:57

I love the 2nd one, it's the least "engagementy" imo.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/06/2022 21:57

How can a gemstone be bad luck?
