There's about 15 flies buzzing round my living room right now

Nasty buggers. I've got the French doors open, they're too stupid to understand I don't want them in here, and also how to get back out!

How do you deal with flies at this time of year? I've tried a stick on screen thing but with the kids in and out all the time it had limited effectiveness. I don't really want to spray them coz they'll all fall on the floor and also the smell of it!

I'd take the dead body out and see if that helps.

GingerPCatt · 16/06/2022 15:29

@GuppytheCat 😂😂

I bought one of those electric flyswatter things shaped like a tennis racquet. Doesn’t do anything to keep them out, but we enjoy trying to fry them.

Why didn't I think of that?!

You need to get a fly trap for the outside, I would reccomend The Buzz

I've got one of those....somewhere....

We moved in October and I wish I could remember which box it's in. Good you reminded me though as actually I'd forgotten.

Thanks I'll get one.

It's just so annoying - WHY is the inside of my house so attractive to them? I lied before, there's no dead body, we don't have smelly drains or anything, the bin isn't by the back door.

We stick the yellow sticky flie papers up in every room. Catches loads.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/06/2022 15:40

God do they still make those? The ones that hang from the ceiling?

OP posts:
ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/06/2022 15:42

Yes they do. I remember my granny having those up. Not sure if I can use those tbh only because we have really high ceilings and I can't reach even with the stepladder I have.

We got one of those smelly traps and caught hundreds, but it absolutely stinks and you can't have it near the house.
What really helped, and I know it sounds mad, was hanging up freezer bags filled with water and a few copper coins just outside the door. It's something to do with the reflection of the coins in the water, but it stopped most of the flies coming in.

ponkydonkey · 16/06/2022 15:45

I cut up a lemon and put it a bowl of water by the door and they don't seem to like it and stay away

Greensleeves · 16/06/2022 15:45

We have a few buzzing around today as well - windows and doors are open as it's hotter than hell. I fucking hate them, disgusting creatures. I find fly papers gross and can't stand the stench of fly spray. So I'm just seething impotently at them, which doesn't seem to be working Angry

bigbluebus · 16/06/2022 15:47

French doors open at back of my house and windows open at the front so when they fly in through the back they have an escape route at the front.

gingersplodgecat · 16/06/2022 15:49

How about a citronella candle? I know they are supposed to be intended for outdoor use, but if you have the doors and windows open...

LaMarschallin · 16/06/2022 15:52

Grin

Presumably you haven't got a dead body in there though?
Twice in the past we've had awful fly outbreaks: once the cat had brought in a mouse which had died behind a bookcase and the other time a bird had fallen down the chimney into the - boarded-up - fireplace.
My sense of smell is useless but DH's is pretty good; he didn't smell the mouse at all (dried out by the time we found it) and, in the case of the bird, the flies preceded the smell.

You and me both. I can't even escape to another room because one of them always likes to have an explore.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/06/2022 15:53

@LaMarschallin definitely no dead bodies! No animals to bring one in and the kids are too big to have brought something in with them not knowing what it was. Also - no smell!

OP posts:
LaMarschallin · 16/06/2022 15:56

Fair enough - just thought it was worth a mention as our corpses really took us by surprise.
Glad that's not your problem though.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 16/06/2022 15:58

Yeah they do, I get them from Amazon or Aldi.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/06/2022 16:06

I tell you what doesn’t work - chasing them round with the hoover Angry

and I’ve just come upstairs and there’s one in my room, another one in my son’s room, probably others in the other kid’s rooms but their teens so I stay out anyway.

feeling a bit like I’m going mad!

Citronella candles seem to help

Yodaisawally · 16/06/2022 16:12

Oh god, we have these, as soon as the doors are open the tickets are flying under the light shade. Hate them. Flu traps don't get them, they seem to get the big fat fuckers. I dose liberally with fly killer around the door frame which helps a bit.

This year I'm getting the magnetic screens.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 16/06/2022 16:17

We keep all doors / windows / curtains closed on hot weather to keep the house as cool as possible. Only open once sun is down / air outside is cooler than air inside. Stops flies too!

Crunchymum · 16/06/2022 16:20

Get a cat.

Preferably a stupid, indoor one. Mine eats every fly that comes into the house.

Soubriquet · 16/06/2022 16:22

Tell them to get out. I know it sounds daft but it really works.

When a fly comes in, if I tell it get out, it does
