I made this much harder than it needed to be do today, by putting the wrong stresses on the wrong syllables when "trying words out" (if that makes sense!) Maybe I should stick to doing it in my head, or on paper than saying the words out loud

Yesterday's word I have definitely only heard in relation to grading of recreational drugs (which I imagine would be a slightly niche demographic of NYTimes readers so assume it's the Starbucks usage!)
