Middle class identifiers 2022

1000 replies

Pullandpush · 14/06/2022 08:06

I read a similar thread a few years ago & the main middle class markers were hummus, organic food, private education, boden, ski trips etc, farrow & ball..
Are these unchanged for 2022 or have the identifiers shifted?
Since the pandemic I've seen a rise in the "hipster" style MC especially the men, maybe the working from home has allowed them to relax into the unshaven, casual look which wasn't there a few years ago...
Private education seems to be on the wane but that may be due to the cost of living..
Any other main MC identifiers I missed?

Why?
Why on earth is this even a thing on your radar?
Why not just live your life as you see fit and let others do the same?
Why the obsession with class?

PrincessesRUs · 14/06/2022 08:09

Why click on the thread if your not interested?!! This is chat - I think it's quite an interesting thing to chat about!!

PrincessesRUs · 14/06/2022 08:10

Waitrose shopping identifies the middle classes, especially if you have gooseberry and cinnamon yogurt in your basket!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/06/2022 08:13

I live in a very MC area, and what I've noticed:

  • lots of kitchen gardens and allotments, everyone's growing their own fruit and veg.
  • lots of people still working exclusively or mainly from home, and setting their own hours.
  • more people running or cycling for fitness, rather than going to a gym or exercise classes (it would be beyond the pale to not be fit - and slim if you're a woman)
  • massive electric cars that they can barely fit down our tiny medieval streets and certainly can't park

I think private education is on the wane too, it’s extortionate (not saying not worth it but we earn a fair whack and couldn’t contemplate it for our DC).
I’d add maybe wine deliveries (from laithwaites), Freddie’s flowers deliveries, not Boden anymore but maybe Me and Em?
Personally I enjoy seeing how social trends change and how things become mainstream (hummous for example) that were once a treat.

It’s not compulsory to click on threads you find annoying.

I could just as easily whinge, ‘why, oh why’ at you.

DaisyWaldron · 14/06/2022 08:16

There are lots of different middle class tribes, and they all have slightly different markers, so you'll get lots of conflicting answers and they'll all be right because cornishware/Labrador/old battered car middle class and Vagina museum mug/whippet/cargo bike middle class both count, along with lots of other variants.

Pullandpush · 14/06/2022 08:20

Forgot to mention the dogs.. Around here the mc all seem to own a white fluffy poo style dog or two usually called Bella or Coco!

Dads doing the school run in jeans and t-shirt because they have nice, work from home flexible jobs.
boden is out for kids. I’d say it’s more about muted Colours on young kids. Think waffle cotton jumpers in mustard and khaki joggers. White everywhere in houses. Out with any grey.

Working from the farm or the beach
Garden parties and fundraisers for Ukraine
Wearing the same stylish dress more than once
Family from Ukraine staying in the cottage
Orchard planting
Parts of the different gardens are now a wild flower meadow

Oh yes, these too!

Mushroo · 14/06/2022 08:25

Younger end of the scale (no kids) -
holidays to either niche exotic places or camping
actually owning a home
Working very late and being very ‘busy’
Parkrun
growing own veg

Nutellaonall · 14/06/2022 08:26

Pizza ovens instead of BBQs. And a fire pit for after.

Freerangechildren · 14/06/2022 08:28

English sparkling wines are extremely popular here, pref made from your own vineyard.

Mushroo · 14/06/2022 08:30

Oh yes, pizza ovens are a massive thing.

SausageAndCash · 14/06/2022 08:32

New Generation Beach Hut owners. Real canvas deckchairs, Dock and Bay towels,

Bell tent, camping at extortionately priced ‘wild’ campsites.

Shinyandnew1 · 14/06/2022 08:33

Garden rooms/offices and WFH
cycling

carefullycourageous · 14/06/2022 08:33

-Definitely no grey interiors
-Doing no mow May, no plastic grass
-Electric vehicle & campaigning for LTN in their area
-Dungarees very popular this year it seems, or pinafore dresses
-Overheard loudly explaining why they would not move from the shitty bit next to the now very expensive area into the very expensive area (they are lying)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/06/2022 08:34

A bell tent. (Or an airtent)

SausageAndCash · 14/06/2022 08:34

cycling.

PlattyJubes · 14/06/2022 08:36

Pizza ovens are definitely not MC in my neck of the woods. Very nouveau riche 😏

NightmareSlashDelightful · 14/06/2022 08:38

Electric cars, especially Teslas or Audi e-trons.
