Pencil crayons?

My children tease me mercilessly as I call colouring pencils "pencil crayons". They insist no one else in the world calls them this.

They tell me crayons are made of wax and colouring pencils are the things I'm referring to.

I haven't got this phrase from my parents as they refer to colouring pencils too. Perhaps a geographic thing? I'm East Mids.

Or have I just made up the whole phrase "pencil crayons"?

That's what I have always called them too. I grew up in the north west. Recently someone also in their 40s from the Midlands asked me to get some crayons for the kids. I got the wax kind but it turns out she meant pencil crayons. I wonder if there is some regional variation.

definitely a thing - I don't use the phrase but know what you mean. East Mids too if that matters.

I'm not East Midlands but referred to colouring pencils as pencil crayons until I became a teacher and realised no one knew what I was talking about.

I always call them pencil crayons (north west). Never just “crayons” though - that’s definitely crayola wax crayons.

the word “crayon” is looking a bit weird now I’ve written it a few times!!

They were 'pencil crayons' in my south west childhood (70s/80s).

No idea what they call them nowadays.

South east here, always been colouring pencils to me but my DH calls them pencil crayons and the kids find it very funny too.

we did colouring in with pencil crayons after we had done p.e. wearing our pumps. Then when we got home we had a batch for tea

We always called them colouring-in pencils as children; now, in many of the schools I have worked in, the drawer containing these is labelled, "coloured pencils," and all the children refer to them as such.

Though on the “wax” front, I actually have some wax based pencil crayons off Amazon and they’re fabulously vibrant. :)

Yorkshire 70s Lancashire 80s - pencil crayons or coloured pencils.

They came in a tin with a picture of a lake on it.

I saw your thread title and wondered whether you were asking when we stopped calling them pencil crayons and started calling them colouring pencils! Realised I hadn't heard them being called pencil crayons for a long time.

In South Africa they've always been pencil crayons, at least the Staedtler ones that kids use, I would think of colouring pencils as some kind of fancy pencil you'd buy in an art shop.

I call them pencil crayons too. I was brought up in Norfolk.
I briefly lived in London and everyone at the school I worked at there called them colouring pencils.

I (Londoner, with a parent frim Brighton and a parent from my the NE) call them colouring pencils
DH (Gloucestershire via Sheffield) and the dc (S/W Yorks) call them pencil crayons
my dad called them crayons, and the other type wax crayons

Definitely pencil crayons growing up in Humberside (as was). Though I distinctly remember teacher moving to our school from Elsewhere not having a clue what we meant and insisting they are coloured pencils.
Now I teach in America and they've definitely never heard of pencil crayons. My class look at me like I'm crazy!

The wax crayons are just crayons.

South West 80s girl here. I call them pencil crayons. Well, I grew up calling them that but realise these days after 17 years of teaching I am more likely to say colouring pencils. Do you call gym shoes "daps" per chance?

I wonder how pencil crayons came about? Perhaphs they were originally literally wax crayons inside a wooden pencil housing?

Grew up SE, but parents from South Shields.

I thought this thread would be about someone asking for ‘pencil crayons’ - there is a product which is a wax crayon within a mechanical pencil-type clear plastic tube, so you wind the crayon up and down, as you do with a mechanical pencil.

(Having tapped that all… maybe they’re ‘mechanical pencil crayons’???!! I’ll see if I can find them and see what the pack says)

I am wondering if anyone else here knows what roll ups are though 😊
