Pencil crayons?

Pianofish · 11/06/2022 22:07

My children tease me mercilessly as I call colouring pencils "pencil crayons". They insist no one else in the world calls them this.

They tell me crayons are made of wax and colouring pencils are the things I'm referring to.

I haven't got this phrase from my parents as they refer to colouring pencils too. Perhaps a geographic thing? I'm East Mids.

Or have I just made up the whole phrase "pencil crayons"?

MIL calls them pencil crayons. From West Yorkshire.

OperaStation · 12/06/2022 07:16

I’ve always called them pencil crayons. I thought everyone did!

Pencil crayons
Or coloured pencils

Crayons are the 'wax' type

Pianofish · 12/06/2022 13:47

This is all very interesting. Whilst I grew up in East Mids, I spent my infant school period in South Yorkshire near Sheffield so perhaps it's a northern thing that I just never assimilated.

Interestingly DH is from South Africa and doesn't call them pencil crayons.

The scathing looks from my firmly-southern children when I refer to pencil crayons is hilarious.

Wait, what. What does he call them OP? 😂

Does he know what roll ups are...?

Pianofish · 12/06/2022 14:24

@isthismylifenow He calls them colouring pencils.

He says roll-ups are weed! (He has been in the UK for the best part of 20 years though.)

That did make me laugh. Ja Boet, he is not incorrect, but that's the other roll up (as opposed to the stationery kind) 😂

I always call them pencil crayons (north west). Never just “crayons” though - that’s definitely crayola wax crayons
exactly this. Crayons are wax. Pencil crayons are pencil. Crayoning is the activity.

I regularly have this argument with a colleague. Im nw too (he is not) and theyve always been pencil crayons, because you crayon in with them or do some crayoning.

Badnewsoracle · 12/06/2022 14:32

It was definitely a thing to call them when I was little but I don't anymore

Mosaic123 · 12/06/2022 14:58

I was born in London. We always called them coloured pencils.

South West 80s girl here. I call them pencil crayons. Well, I grew up calling them that but realise these days after 17 years of teaching I am more likely to say colouring pencils. Do you call gym shoes "daps" per chance?

Your post is remarkably similar to mine - as is your background. I'm a SW child of the 1980s and was firmly in the pencil crayons and daps camp.

isthismylifenow · 13/06/2022 09:13

Just because this was bothering me a bit (yes I am an overthinker), I went to check out some boxes I have stashed around... and they say coloured pencils on the box. But when I Googled, the description says pencil crayons, but very few have this written on the box. So, at what point did this change? As I am 99.9% sure that they used to say pencil crayons on the box too.

Now I am wondering if this is something to add to the list of Mandela effects.......

😮

They were 'pencil crayons' in my south west childhood (70s/80s).

No idea what they call them nowadays.

Likewise on all counts!

TreacheryPepper · 13/06/2022 09:24

That's what I call them, and I too have been mocked. I'm in the East Midlands.

Pencil crayons and wax crayons.
