Kinda regretting my eldest son's name

To cut to the chase we named him Kylo. For those not in the know it's from Star Wars. He wasn't named for any love of the character (I hadn't seen the sequels at that point) the name to me just sounded cute, like a varient of Mylo I guess and I do still like it now. To be clear I have absolutely no desire to change his name (he's 4 now), he is Kylo and doesn't like to be called Kai or any shortened version. I just worry sometimes that I've given my child a name that he'll grow to regret. What do you think?

I like it.

goldfinchonthelawn · 09/06/2022 22:56

If he grows up not to like it because it is a bit out there, he can just change it to Kyle which is a more mainstream name. Or change it entirely. Lots of people do.

I know what you mean, I called my son Charles as I wanted to name his Charlie but don’t like nicknames as real names. He’s 14 now but I still occasionally get a pang of “what have I done?!” I actually mentioned it to him a few days ago and he said he doesn’t mind it (but obviously prefers Charlie) - some kids call him Chaz which I always thought I’d hate, but it suits his personality.

Young people have all sorts of exotic names these days, Kylo isn’t that strange in comparison to some I’ve seen on the baby name boards!

I like it! I’m not one for very “out there” names but it’s normal enough (and as you say, similar enough to Mylo and Kyle) but still unusual. The character of Kylo Ren is pretty cool and part of a much loved franchise so honestly don’t regret it.

worraliberty · 09/06/2022 23:08

The more I say it, the more I like it. It sounds like the sort of name a Rapper might choose.

He's only 4, as he grows up he might decide he prefers Kai anyway.

PashunFroot · 09/06/2022 23:09

I know a few little Kylo’s! Lovely name.

flurryofcurry · 09/06/2022 23:23

Never heard the name before. I think it's great. Though I'm hearing it in a dublin accent as if his name was Kyle and his friends call him
kylo. The way Damian becomes Damo and Anthony becomes Anto. Still cool

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/06/2022 23:29

As long as he likes his name, it’s fine. As long as you wouldn’t be upset if one day he said “mum, dad, I really hate people thinking I’m named after a unit of weight measurement: can I change my name to Kyle?” then it’s still fine. Beyond that, you’re overthinking.

Winecheesesleep · 09/06/2022 23:35

I'm usually one for traditional names but I like it, a bit quirky but not too unusual sounding.

Kanaloa · 09/06/2022 23:42

Well personally I wouldn’t have done it. I’ve taught a few kids named after parents’ favourite TV shows/movies etc (notably a Kaleesi which as well as being the character’s title and not her name, was misspelled) and to always makes me think ‘are you choosing a name for your child who will grow to be a person or are you picking out a name for your superwholock tumblr blog?’ It’s lovely that you like Star Wars but get a Star Wars t-shirt, don’t advertise it in your kid’s entire life.

Having said that, it’s his name now so you pretty much need to suck it up. I’m not surprised he won’t answer to Kai because that’s not been his name for 4 years.

Kanaloa · 09/06/2022 23:44

Also it benefits from being close to Kyle, so if your main worry is that he will hate it when he’s older he can easily shorten it to Ky or Kyle.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 09/06/2022 23:46

I like it. It’s not offensive, it’s easily read. Don’t over think it.

Blaze1886 · 09/06/2022 23:47

It's better than 99% of names I see mentioned on here

floppybit · 09/06/2022 23:48

I really like it!

potteringinmysocks · 09/06/2022 23:50

It's fine. In ten years only die hard fans will even make the association. There's nothing wrong with his name.

Amdone123 · 09/06/2022 23:51

I think it's quite nice, too ( and my favourite boys names are very traditional).
He likes it, that's the main thing.

bagelsandcheese · 09/06/2022 23:55

I've never heard the name before but I really like it! It's a lovely name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/06/2022 23:58

It’s a lot better than Khaleesi, look at it that way. I don’t think it’s ideal but he can always change it - and I guess he has a more conventional middle name.

MrsEricBana · 09/06/2022 23:59

I haven't heard of it to be honest but it's absolutely fine, don't worry. There are much worse names around and I also think the name moulds to the person to an extent e.g. I'm not at all keen on Colin as a name but Colin Firth, Colin Farrell are not at all "Colin-y"!

I’d say it’s pretty likely he will.

Look on the bright side though, you could have gone for JarJar or Greebo

Kezzie200 · 10/06/2022 03:48

Names go in fashions, so you are probably thinking you'd call him something else if born today. Given the millions of names out there, its no surprise.

Try to find a way to accept it though, or your negativity could impact the way he feels about his identity. Maybe shorten it to Ky or Kai.

LongLiveLiz · 10/06/2022 06:12

Kylo is nice, at least you didn’t call him Kylo-Ren

MinnieMountain · 10/06/2022 06:26

What’s his middle name?
My step-father has 2 traditional Welsh names and goes by his middle as he prefers it.

SunnyLobelia · 10/06/2022 06:34

It's a nice name and I bet he is a gorgeous little Kylo.

FWIW my best friend and her sister both named their 5 children after characters from Lord of the Rings. (all of whom were born around the time the films came out).

Hardly anyone makes the connection now at all. The names are gorgeous anyway.

Nutellaspoon · 10/06/2022 06:38

If this was my son his nickname would be Ren or soloson.
