I've got my first cold sore ever and I'm about to get married

My toddler got a cold sore at nursery and I tried so hard but I've just woken up and the middle of my top lip is swollen and tingly. It's big. I'm about to get married and I'm in tears. I've never had one before. Will I get lots? I keep seeing outbreak online. Will it just be this one? How often am I likely to get more? I'm so upset Sad

I’ve never had more than one at a time. Get a pack of Compeed cold sore patches, they work really well.

33goingon64 · 08/06/2022 04:04

Get the Compeed patches first thing in the morning and change them every 12 hours. You can wear makeup over them.

aurynne · 08/06/2022 04:19

Get a prescription for oral acyclovir quickly, it's the only thing that will make them shrink a disappear quickly, and will make you less likely to pass it round

What a rotten time to get your first cold sore, OP!

I used to get cold sores a lot, then I discovered you can request Aciclovir tablets from your GP. If you start taking them at the first sign of a cold sore, they stop the cold sore appearing. So no need to suffer!

In the meantime, as previous posters said, get Compeed cold sore patches from the chemist. You can apply make up over them and they do a pretty good job of hiding the cold sore - and healing it.

L-lysine. Buy it and eat them.

febrezy · 08/06/2022 04:43

It's the middle of my top lip it's very swollen in one big lump and the lump seems to have lots and lots of little white spots are all of these going to be individual blisters? It's going to be insane if so Sad

Poor you!

Yes it may form a series of tiny blisters right now you need to not pick it, be fastidious with not sharing face cloths, towels etc. I’d be getting the old fashioned cold sore treatment liquid from boots (it dries them out) and applying the plasters as a pp advised and they reduce the appearance also. IME, Acyclovir creams/treatments can make them look rapidly worse but they will clear up more quickly so it depends when the wedding is? Obviously be very careful around intimacy as you don’t want it spreading to your OH. Or your /their nethers! Unfortunately you do now have the virus so you may experience outbreaks from now on. Common triggers are stress, eating nuts and exposure to bright sunshine after a period of not much sunshine (IYSWIM) or extreme cold/wind.

I hope you feel better soon and good luck with the wedding.

Wallywobbles · 08/06/2022 05:07

No it sounds like it's fully formed now. They feel like a burn pain wise. I second the oral antivirals. You can put T-tree on it. Get the stick on patches. Really throw everything at it. And really no kissing.

Netaporter · 08/06/2022 05:09

TBC, Acyclovir tablets do not make the cold sore worse (quite the opposite), but IME the acyclovir creams sometimes make them worse so either get an online prescription from Superdrug etc or your GP but the sooner the better, I.e start today. Keeps some tablets in reserve in case of future outbreaks also.

heldinadream · 08/06/2022 05:34

What you can do immediately before you go and buy all the drugs is put an ice cube on it, cold drives the virus back into the body. Keep it iced as much as possible and then get out there and buy all the other stuff. Good luck. Hope it goes away for you!

LongLiveLiz · 08/06/2022 05:47

As well as all the advice you have been given to try and get rid of the cold sores now that you have the virus remember the following things.
No kisses, keep your face away from your family and friends.
Dont touch and if you do wash your hands straight away thoroughly.
Cross contamination, you don’t want herpes too so use a separate face cloth and towel to everyone else for your face.
No oral sex, unless you’re 100% sure it’s gone or you’re not about to get one as you don’t want to give someone herpes either.
Dont pick, they need to run their course.

OP, this sucks but it won't ruin your wedding day, I promise. Congratulations on your marriage and I hope you have a blast celebrating!

Compeed patches are your friend here. They make the sore almost invisible.

febrezy · 08/06/2022 06:09

It goes so far off my lip towards my nose I feel like a patch won't touch it let alone hide it?

Crunchymum · 08/06/2022 06:15

When is your wedding?

Yafilthyanimal · 08/06/2022 06:15

I bought some Wilkos own brand Coldsore cream last week for £1.

It cleared mine up within a day!

Oh, bad luck!

You’re probably more susceptible because of wedding excitement / stress.

I used to get the occasional one from my teens into my 30s - and learnt to apply Tea Tree oil at the first tingling. That almost invariably stopped the thing in its tracks and it didn’t develop into a sore. Haven’t had another in decades now.

Hope some of the solutions offered are successful for you.

SD1978 · 08/06/2022 06:20

Go to the GP ASAP- there is medication. You can get. I got the same before my wedding and Dr was happy to prescribe it as it was my wedding and I was quite upset at the thought of having one!!

Cervinia · 08/06/2022 06:24

I feel your pain. I started with a cold two weeks ago, a week ago I started with the cold sore which was a huge weepy mess three days later. 8 days later the entire space from my top lip to my nose is a dark red scab.

i used Zovirax religiously three times a day from the tingle, it didn’t speed the process up or reduce it but it wasn’t painful.

when are you getting married?

febrezy · 08/06/2022 06:27

Two weeks and it's still bad? I thought it was around a week Sad I only 3/4 days so I'm fucked then.

Waiting for gp to open so I can beg and plead Sad

It will. You may need a couple of patches to cover a large sore. You can put make up over them.

Getoffmyshoes · 08/06/2022 06:33

Get yourself down to boots and buy a herpotherm pen ASAP, works a dream for me and massively reduces any cold sores. I use it every 2/3 hours until the bastard goes away. Buy some comped patches as a back up.
