Julia Roberts moment

Dd is getting married at the end of September.
Today I went to a posh shop in our nearest city.
I'm the wrong side of 60. Only 5ft tall and a size 18 with a flabby belly. Plus I'm only just getting over breast cancer so boobs are lobsided.
DH was with me and we were both dressed in our minds well turned out.
DH stood to one side while I was looking through the dresses, when one of the assistants came over and the first words were that these dresses cost over £300 so if I want to look at the rails at the back they MIGHT be in my price range.
Fortunately DH overheard and is quicker than me gave a good reply.
He said 'my wife has £1000 to spend on an outfit for our daughters wedding and if your stock is only about £300 this is not the shop for her'.
We then left. He was only joking about the £1k. I wanted to go home as I was so upset but he persuaded me to carry on shopping.

After 3 other shops with nothing I liked I came across another posh shop and they couldn't have been more helpful. I chose a dress but parts of it were not working well with my body. They are going to alter it to fit just need to return in August.
And it cost £450 and that includes a hair accessory. Just bag and shoes to get.

Why that assistant was so rude I don't know. Thank goodness no one else was in the shop to hear her say that.

How dare she. Please complain.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/06/2022 19:17

Glad you found a dress - and what a great husband you have too!

daisydalrymple · 06/06/2022 19:17

Oh I love that response. I’m so glad you got the right outfit in the end too!

Your DH - what a star! ⭐️

UrsulaPandress · 06/06/2022 19:25

A chap came round to quote for a kitchen in our newly knocked through room. I was in my horse mucking out gear. He looked me up and down and said “You do know our kitchens start at £20,000?”

Some folk are just tosser.

Glad you got sorted.

Palavah · 06/06/2022 19:27

Big mistake, huge!

So glad the other shop was lovely to you.

WombatNo12 · 06/06/2022 19:30

A wedding dress maker put the phone down on me when I said I was a size 16...

I often get told to look in the budget section or whatever. I've had chats with car sales executives, who know of posh colleagues being mean, then discovering the customer is a CEO or something & they've just lost a massive amount of commission.

Somewhat hilariously I'm actually seriously minted. 😁

See it as them being in the wrong...

GreenCard · 06/06/2022 19:33

Oh I love your DH!
we had it with a car show room, did we know how expensive these were and want to see cheaper ones? WTAF!

Pamlar · 06/06/2022 19:46

Congratulations on your daughter's wedding, on beating cancer and having lovely husband.
Am sure you will look fantastic.
The sales woman sounds vile, sorry you were treated so appallingly

Horsemad · 06/06/2022 20:03

I love your DH's response, what a star he is! ⭐

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 06/06/2022 20:04

What a horrible person she is. Complain!

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/06/2022 20:05

Your dh is a star. People are vile.

Cardiffborn · 06/06/2022 20:06

Better than complaining to the shop, leave a factual review on their Facebook page if they have one.

sunscreenandsaltwater · 06/06/2022 20:07

Wow. Absolutely name and shame.

Big mistake. HUGE.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 06/06/2022 20:07

Your husband is a legend!

Like a PP I came on to add my experience buying a kitchen when the saleswoman warned us that their kitchens were very expensive. She missed out on a large commission that day.

SunflowerGardens · 06/06/2022 20:14

Good on your husband! Have to say I don't understand this attitude at all. It's not like working in a clothes shop is a prestigious occupation so why do some sales people have such notions of themselves.

Dragonsmother · 06/06/2022 20:15

I had a builder come round to quote our renovation. I was in my comfy well worn lounge wear. He looked at me like I was sh*t and said “sorry you can’t afford my fees” and left CF.
A few weeks later I brought a nice new car. I was in my “important meeting” office attire. Went to Tesco and as I hop out of my car he hops out the van besides me. Eyes popped out of his head.
My Pretty Woman moment!

WGACA · 06/06/2022 20:17

Your husband’s response was perfect! I’m glad you got an outfit too.

cottagegardenflower · 06/06/2022 20:22

Kiss your husband for all of us on mumsnet. Genius

Elderflower14 · 06/06/2022 20:23

I had a similar experience when I was getting married.. I went alone into a bridal shop in the town near me and the staff looked at me like something the cat dragged in so I walked out. Fast forward two weeks and we were visiting family in West Yorkshire... Driving out of Keighley towards Oxenhope and on the end of a row of terraced cottages was a small bridal shop with a parking space in front of the door... I managed to get my bridal shoes... I also wanted a garter... The lady who ran the shop made me turn round and she got my late DH to choose it... It then went in a box and a sealed paper bag and wasn't opened till my wedding day.. A lovely surprise to open on my special day... ♥ ♥

5zeds · 06/06/2022 20:24

Arf! This happens to me in various ways regularly. I wear jeans and a fleece almost everywhere because I have a disabled child so am on the floor a lot and I have shockingly sore elbows from arthritis and need the light non bunching material to keep my joints moving. Some people are dickheads. Don’t give them your money. How much money you have in no way reflects your worth.

dubyalass · 06/06/2022 20:25

Hurrah for your husband and fuck her.

I went into Hobbs in Bath once, wearing outdoor type clothing. The young sales assistant literally looked me up and down, sneered and turned on her heel. I was in there to buy some work clothes, all set to spend a few hundred, but after that I just walked out. Nowadays I'd have the confidence to say something but at the time I was just 😳

NellesVilla · 06/06/2022 20:28

What a cunt!

OP, you are too good for that shop. Have a lovely time at your DD’s wedding.

tonystarksrighthand · 06/06/2022 20:34

Your husband rocks!
