Hotel chocolat- I just don't get it?

So I was in a steaming mood yesterday and was in the shopping centre and thought I would treat myself to a small pack (the three for 12 pound size packs)
I have never before tasted chocolate with such a cheap oily aftertaste. Have I had a bad batch or has anyone else found this?

Totally agree - overpriced and very average chocolate.

saveforthat · 30/05/2022 12:10

What did you actually buy? Those little balls? I've always found HC products delicious, especially the ones with alcohol fillings.

Badbadbunny · 30/05/2022 12:10

Yep, I agree. Someone bought me one of their advent calendars a couple of years ago. The chocolates were awful.

Same here. Overpriced and it does taste oily.

theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 30/05/2022 12:20

No it was some custard tart chocolates . They tasted amazing initially but at the end left a really oily film in my mouth

I obviously have poor quality taste buds because I love it. I also like Cadbury's though!

stuntbubbles · 30/05/2022 12:21

It’s just Thornton’s with middle class marketing.

godmum56 · 30/05/2022 12:21

when they first launched, their stuff was delicious. I don't know what they have done but yes its horrible now.

KangarooKenny · 30/05/2022 12:21

I agree. Galaxy and Cadburys is better and cheaper.

Ncwinc · 30/05/2022 12:23

I don’t like their chocolate. I’ve never understood the appeal.

ruralwanderer · 30/05/2022 12:24

Totally agree, I used to love hotel chocolat but hate it now due to the oily aftertaste.

HarrietSchulenberg · 30/05/2022 12:25

When they first started they sold delicious, and expensive, chocolates made by individual chocolatiers. They used to be mail order by subscription and came with little cards telling about who made the products.
Now, I agree, it all just tastes a bit greasy and is vastly overpriced for what it is.

Triffid1 · 30/05/2022 12:28

Totally depends on what you buy. The alcohol-filled chocolates are great. The bulk of the others are not worth the price. The ice cream is amazing!

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 30/05/2022 12:30

Absolutely depends on what you buy, but I only ever purchase from their factory shop now because then the price doesn't come into the equation at all.

MrsDThomas · 30/05/2022 12:32

I tried their chocolate gin.

it was gin. And tasted of gin.

their chocolate taste a cheap advent calendar

megletthesecond · 30/05/2022 12:33

It's not fancy stuff. Just marketed well.

If you want proper £££ chocolate you want Artisan du Chocolat.

DaisyWaldron · 30/05/2022 12:35

Far too expensive, but they often have short-dated chocolate at 70% off, which gives it an acceptable price:quality ratio.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 30/05/2022 12:36

It's just over hyped rubbish and full of palm oil. We bought some a few years ago and I couldn't eat it because the palm oil made me feel so sick. Same with Lindt. Oily crap.

Staynow · 30/05/2022 12:37

I totally agree with pp who said it's Thornton's with middle class marketing and also with pp who recommends Artisan Du Chocolat if you want expensive decent chocolates.
For bars (rather than individual chocolates) i'm a big fan of Montezumas, and if you're looking to go sugar free then I really recommend their 100% dark peanut butter one - and I say that as someone who only used to eat Cadbury's milk chocolate. Unfortunately Cadburys has been completely and utterly ruined.

lisavanderpumpscloset · 30/05/2022 12:43

Overpriced and tastes vile. DH's work gifted their staff those Christmas wreath shape boxes, I think they cost around £60 each? Absolutely vile and went in the bin (put it on eBay but no one wanted it)

Toulouses · 30/05/2022 12:43

The product is certainly nothing special and I can’t imagine who buys it at their extortionate prices.

MsMiaWallace · 30/05/2022 12:44

Cadburys doesn't even taste of chocolate now.

Hotel chocolat use 100% ethical cocoa.
I think that most of their range are lovely!

WhatIsThisPlease · 30/05/2022 12:45

Agree. My heart sank when I opened a big box of HC chocolates for my birthday. I gave them away. I think it's horrible

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 30/05/2022 12:46

Its palm oil, I try to avoid any chocolate that uses palm oil, as it leaves that nasty manufactured taste.

Winterhail · 30/05/2022 12:46

I love hotel chocolat, but then I also love Leonidas chocolates, and I think they have the edge over HC.
