Hotel chocolat- I just don't get it?

So I was in a steaming mood yesterday and was in the shopping centre and thought I would treat myself to a small pack (the three for 12 pound size packs)
I have never before tasted chocolate with such a cheap oily aftertaste. Have I had a bad batch or has anyone else found this?

When they first got started about 15 years ago, we signed up for the monthly tasting club and that was brilliant. A lovely box of chocolates every month that we would taste and score.

Gave it up after about a year, got a box a couple of months ago and was really disappointed, nothing like the way they used to be and definitely not worth the money.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 30/05/2022 15:06

Yep also agree... Thornton with better marketing..
I was so disappointed.

How, how ,how can making chocolate have gone so wrong?? How!!

Even a local independent shop where we spent a fortune at Xmas had dreadul chocks and some palm oil use!

Excited101 · 30/05/2022 15:13

@Dolares pm me your address- I’ve got some ginger ones and I hated them! Love HC though, am not getting the hate! DM is really fussy with chocolate and she loves it as well!

Well I like it. Particularly the little white balls filled with passion fruit.

I think what you're missing is that everyone has different taste.

At least one person has mentioned M&S chocolate - to me it has a very distinctive taste that I just don't like.

Blossomandbee · 30/05/2022 15:30

I had some as present about 10 years ago. It was very mediocre even back then, as others have said a lot like Thorntons chocolate.

starsparkle08 · 30/05/2022 15:56

I much prefer cadburys

Pookymalooky · 30/05/2022 16:21

HC don’t use palm oil, you only have to google to find the answer to that?

eurochick · 30/05/2022 17:01

Well you can send any spares my way. I like it. It's not my favourite of the big brands (Neuhaus followed by Godiva take that crown) but it's pretty good. My office is near one of their shops and it is pretty bad for the waistline...

user1471538283 · 30/05/2022 17:03

I like the little buttons and the strawberry cheesecake, my DS likes the praline and my bf hates it all. It is overpriced.

They were a few years ago which is why it made me feel sick. I haven't bought it since.

gumballbarry · 30/05/2022 17:22

For chocolate, Cadburys (specifically Dairy Milk) is unbeatable. IKWYM with the oily strange taste with Hotel Chocolat, Lindt etc.

But, when it comes to biscuits, HC do an amazing selection box of chocolatey biscuits (mint, hazelnut, salted caramel) that is amazing.

Furrbabymama87 · 30/05/2022 17:28

I've only ever had it once and thought it tasted average. I was expecting it to be amazing. I've had better from Aldi.

ArcheryAnnie · 30/05/2022 17:37

I like HC but haven't had much. I love montezumas but thought Tony's Chocoloney was a waste of time.

Really like M&S truffles. A relative buys them for me but I can only have one every other day as too much dairy gives me a headache.

Lidl dark chocolate is surprisingly excellent.

Sh05 · 30/05/2022 17:49

I've only recently just tried their iced coffee chocolate ball, it was delicious.
Never bought hotel Chocolat, it was a gift so never tried any of their others.

ElenaSt · 30/05/2022 14:04

I have this on subscription as it's one of the few chocolates left that has a decent taste.

I've found these slabs in duty free depending on airport/terminal etc in the past.

They're really nice, there's a lovely nut one - maybe almond or hazelnut or pistachio, I forget.

I also like some of the Fin Du Carre that you can get at Lidl.

I also like toblerone.

HC is too fancy flavour wise for me and I don't care for alcohol chocolates. Presentation is lovely tho so good for gifts.

I don't like it, but I don't know why people get snarky on threads like this. I don't think anybody is congratulating themselves for being too good for Hotel Chocolat - loads of people are saying they prefer brands that are quite a lot cheaper.
FWIW my favourite chocolate is a Ripple bar or an M and S white chocolate Alpine bar. I also wish Thorntons would bring back their Sicilian lemon bar. Nothing I've tasted from HC is a patch on any of these.

lol exactly it's hilarious anyone would get that impression they certainly wouldn't if they knew me!
If I said I was treating myself surely that's wouldn't imply I thought I was too good for it 🙈
Just wanted to know if the oily aftertaste was normal the level of projection is hilarious 😂

So I got a big box of HC for Xmas as I usually do and usually I'm amazed with how lovely they are. This year not so much. Have they changed or have I?? I've developed a taste for Tony chocolonely recently, maybe that's just better?

Cheerfulpedantry · 27/12/2022 19:33

HarrietSchulenberg · 30/05/2022 12:25

When they first started they sold delicious, and expensive, chocolates made by individual chocolatiers. They used to be mail order by subscription and came with little cards telling about who made the products.
Now, I agree, it all just tastes a bit greasy and is vastly overpriced for what it is.

I used to do this! Loved it!

I still do like their cherry deluxe though.

So for those who don’t like HC, what do you buy? I am fed up of buying expensive chics just to find they are mediocre. So any recommendations gratefully received.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 27/12/2022 20:22

I used to love Hotel Chocolat because the chocolate was gorgeous ( lovely crackle) and they were all so different.

Now it's mainly flavoured ganache or truffle. So basically, all the same with ( very slightly ) different flavours.

FloweryCurtainTwitcher · 30/05/2022 13:07

You need Audreys- they make the chocolates for Fortnums

www.audreyschocolates.co.uk/index.aspx

You will never go back.

I do like HC (especially their chunky slabs) but can’t wait to try this brand!

Miss03852 · 27/12/2022 21:07

I love Hotel Chocolat, I’m vegan and they do amazing vegan chocolate.

maeveiscurious · 27/12/2022 21:09

The dark chocolate is excellent

TellMeItsNotTrue · 27/12/2022 21:31

Feel free to send unwanted Christmas gifts my way 😂 I'm not a big chocolate fan in general but I do love hotel chocolat

I got a Velvetiser for Christmas and have loved every flavour I've tried

The ginger one has a lovely kick to it, that one and the Salted caramel clementine are my favourites

Robert202 · 15/09/2024 00:23

Hotel Chocolat contains no palm oil.
