If you are vegetarian

What do you like in a bbq? The meat eaters are having char sui pork but all I've got for the vegetarians is halloumi.

Any ideas please?

I'm not veggie, but I normally do big flat mushrooms, peppers, aubergine, corn on the cob (takes ages so foil up and put on at the start).

Depends on whether your veggies like fake meat as well - there are some pretty good veggie sausages out there, but ask whether they like them and which they prefer?

RaininSummer · 28/05/2022 09:16

If there is sufficient halloumi as the protein element then I would want see some lovely roasted veg, hot or cold, salads and bread. If guests are more non meat eaters than veggie, then some fish is good

Plump82 · 28/05/2022 09:23

Veggie burgers! Fake meat, not bean burgers. Asda do great vegetarian hot dogs in their fresh section.
For the halloumi brush them with chilli jam before grilling to make them a little more interesting.
Some sort of pasta always goes down well too. Pesto pasta with sun blush tomato's and mozzarella pearls.

Make sure you have plenty vegetarian food as I've been to BBQs where the meat eaters have had the meat and a lot of the veggie options meaning not a lot left for the vegetarians.

I love asparagus on the bbq, marinated in garlic and soy sauce (chilli flakes for those who don't have my terrible stomach!). Portabello muchrooms stuffed with breadcrumbs and Boursin garlic and herb (there's a vegan one now too). Kebabs with mushrooms, courgette, sundries tomato or cherry tomato, also usually marinated in garlic and soy (can you spot a theme?) New potatoes parboiled then wrapped in foil with garlic butter and instead of parsley I really finely dice kale because DH and DC all hate parsley). Halloumi or saganaki which make nice burgers combined with portabello mushrooms if they don't like meat substitutes. (I personally like the Beyond burger and Richmond sausage BBQd for a meat substitute.)

starlingdarling · 28/05/2022 09:36

The harissa potato recipe here is one of my favourites: digital.eatyourbooks.com/content/Charred-Preview/index.html#page=2

The only change I make to the recipe is that I put the same veg on the same skewer. So if the halloumi or asparagus starts to catch before the potatoes are done then I can move them to the top rack and continue charring the potatoes. Once it's done I put them all in bowl together to mix and cover liberally in the coriander and lemon oil.

Linda mc Lincolnshire sausages are really nice
Waitrose do some really good veggie food in their frozen bit
I'd do mushrooms, asparagus, sweetcorn, beetroot burgers and veggie sausage on the BBQ, with some snack bits cooked in the oven, spinach bites, sweet potato chips or something

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/05/2022 09:37

For a bbq, veggie sausages or burgers.

nearlyspringyay · 28/05/2022 09:39

Thanks all, no fake meat, no fish.

I don't really do burger and sausage bbqs so want to do something to match what im doing for meat eaters.

Now thinking char Sui portobello mushrooms, asparagus and halloumi...

If you do portobello mushrooms and halloumi, that makes a good burger substitute. Can't go wrong with (good) veggie sausages. Cauldron sausages are the best on a BBQ.

TolkiensFallow · 28/05/2022 09:43

I have previously done butternut squash cubes on skewers with olive oil, fresh basil and salt. They are yum.

vegetable skewers are generally nice though, peppers, mushrooms, courgette, onion etc

ZarquonsSandals · 28/05/2022 09:46

Sweet potato or butternut squash is really good on the barbecue too.

starlingdarling · 28/05/2022 09:52

Thinking about it, it might be best to ask the veggies if they eat whatever vegetables your making. I secretly want to cry when someone presents me with a portobello mushroom stuffed in a burger or mushrooms in general. I eat as much as I can out of politeness then pretend I'm stuffed. Ive been a vegetarian for around 25 years and it's been the default ingredient for all that time so I'm all mushroomed out.

KezzabellaB · 28/05/2022 09:55

Placemarking! Not a veggie but it all sounds so good! 🤤🤤🤤

chipspeasorbeans · 28/05/2022 10:15

I make these with sweet potato wedges and corn on the cob

Needmorelego · 28/05/2022 10:26

I like the Linda McCartney burgers that have mozzarella cheese in.
As someone has said - I would ask people. Some would prefer fake meat so they are just having a typical bbq burger, others don't touch fake meat with a bargepole !!
I once had potato waffles cooked on a BBQ - that was brilliant !

Shelovespawpatrol · 28/05/2022 10:30

Bbq aubergine and you can also make fresh veggie burgers from vegetables. We like to have a choice/variety and not just be handed the one veggie option.

BlankTimes · 28/05/2022 10:32

On behalf of your veggie guests OP, thank-you for taking the time and trouble to come up with a delicious meal.

If you're not cooking the veggie meals on a seperate barbecue, please could you cook all the veggie meals first. Reason being that veggie food that's been cooked next to meat and is splashed with the meat juices or put on the rack where meat has been cooked and tastes of the meat isn't really veggie any more.

Something else that happens when there's veggie food available is the meat eaters also help themselves to it, so unless the veggies are first in the queue, there may not be any left by the time they get to the table. Shock

I've got a double grill, all separate!

BuddhaAtSea · 28/05/2022 10:41

Courgette, relatively thinly cut lengthwise.
same with aubergine.
Peppers.
Mushrooms
Haloumi

Once done, drizzle pomegranate molasses over them.

SallyWD · 28/05/2022 10:49

I love halloumi! Also love vegetarian sausages or burgers in baps.

MadameFantabulosa · 28/05/2022 10:55

I make peanut burgers, which are always popular - you need to hide them from the carnivores. Lots of interesting salads, some with chick peas or lentils.

Brilliant that you are putting some thought into this, but please, please don't let the meat eaters eat all the veggie stuff!!!

SwankyPants · 28/05/2022 11:02

Fake meat for me, halloumi is far too salty for me so if that was the only thing available I'd be really disappointed
