If you are vegetarian

What do you like in a bbq? The meat eaters are having char sui pork but all I've got for the vegetarians is halloumi.

Any ideas please?

Chargrill all your peppers, courgette, aubergine, asparagus etc dry first and then drizzle with oil. Otherwise you get a soggy mess.

Halloumi is great but it needs to be really frazzled and gnarly rather than warm and floppy.

Make sure you've got loads of bread, cheese, crackers, dips, salad. Meat eaters tend to guzzle the lot, the fuckers. The entitlement is real! Grin

Check they like mushrooms. I'm a vegetarian and I hate them. They always seem to be the veggie choice. Love Halloumi & corn on the cob though. I would be happy with them and maybe a veggie sausage or burger

Sounds like it'll be great for veggies - I'd be happy with what you said. I can't stand fake meat but love mushrooms and hallomi. Fake meat options are making it quiet hard to eat out for cheese loving veggies like me. I've gone off on a tangent there...

Yay! A fellow mushroom hater! I also like halloumi and corn on the cob. It's just the default option of mushrooms that turns me right off my food.

And, yes to meat eaters not thinking about amount left for veggies. This happens a lot with sharing takeaways too. I don't share anymore and say why. I have marvellous boundaries when it comes to food.

Thehonestybox · 28/05/2022 21:17

Definitely fake meat or lentil burgers. Otherwise all the meat eaters will be full on protein, and the veggies will have consumed about 50 calories worth of mushrooms

dameofdilemma · 30/05/2022 16:31

Veggies often fall into two distinct camps - those that love the 'fake' meat stuff (because it has the taste/texture of meat) and those that loathe it (for the same reason).

So could have both to be on the safe side or just have veggies (as very few vegetarians don't like veg).

Veg skewers are tasty - courgette/pepper/mushroom - some without halloumi for vegans maybe. Baste in a marinade of oil, garlic and herbs.

I also do potato parcels on the bbq - halved new potatoes pre-boiled and parcelled up in foil with garlic, rosemary and seasoning.

Richmond vegan sausages, mmmmmm

BarbaraofSeville · 30/05/2022 17:33

Brilliant that you are putting some thought into this, but please, please don't let the meat eaters eat all the veggie stuff

Maybe remember that meat eaters eat vegetables too and make enough of the vegetable versions for everyone?

HangingOver · 30/05/2022 17:37

OP: veggies, what do you like to eat at a BBQ?

Veggies: veggies sausages + burgers!

Op: No

I hate fake meat so it’s always best to ask! I also hate halloumi 😀
I like veggie burgers made of actual vegetables, but lots of them fall to bits in a bbq so need to be careful!

MiseryWIthAStent · 30/05/2022 18:17

Linda McCartney burgers, rosemary and red onion sausages by Linda McCartney too and cauldron's falafels.

KateLumley · 30/05/2022 18:21

I like paneer which I marinade in yoghurt and curry paste. Threaded onto skewers with red pepper. Really nice served with iceberg lettuce in a naan wrap.

I also make beetroot and courgette koftas that also go on skewers for ease of turning.

KittenKong · 30/05/2022 18:24

I’m happy with the ‘sides’ - bread, coleslaw, potato salad, something like couscous - even a potato baked in the coals (yum).

I do love haloumi though.

Roarsomemore · 30/05/2022 18:59

@KateLumley That all sounds delicious
