What a great role model he is :)

He's amazing! I should be asleep.but I'm reading all the messages of support he rightly deserves.

I'm a Blackpool fan and I'm so happy to see he's receiving so much support from the club and his team mates too. 🧡🍊

user75 · 16/05/2022 22:19

I think it is incredible - he is 17! What an amazing young man 😁

@TheChippendenSpook I’m also a Blackpool fan and could not be more proud of Jake and so proud to be a Blackpool fan and see the messages of support he has been receiving ⚽️🍊🧡

AnyFucker · 16/05/2022 23:43

It is ridiculous that Jake is “the first openly gay premiership footballer to come out in 30 years”

what the hell ?

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2022 23:44

What an amazing, brave young man.

AnyFucker · 16/05/2022 23:45

Sorry- professional footballer

narcdad · 16/05/2022 23:57

Sorry, but I don't get the fuss, his gay and plays football, I don't think it's brave or amazing. Just a man who has announced his sexual orientation.

ithinkidbetterleaverightnow · 16/05/2022 23:59

My husband claims he was forced to come out by the S** who were threatening to out him. That's the thought a couple of days ago on Twitter, in any case.

I am of the opinion it shouldn't matter, but to some people it obviously still does. FootballHmm

We remember John Fashanu.

Thank you and well done to Jake Daniels.

GirlCrushxxx · 17/05/2022 00:24

I don't get the fuss either

Grown women fawning over a kid?

Squiff70 · 17/05/2022 00:25

Why is this even newsworthy? I even got a breaking news alert on my phone from the NBC News app when this story broke and couldn't believe what I was seeing.

People of all/any/no sexual orientation have been fighting for decades for LGBT+ people to be included, and I genuinely thought (and hoped) that for the main, they were. So why the HELL is this breaking news? Why make a huge song and dance about somebody coming out as gay saying it's a "brave and courageous" thing?

People either want inclusion or they don't. Why the dramatics?

I fully support gay rights etc and don't see those who are gay/lesbian/bi/whatever as any different from anyone else. But stories like this MAKE them different. It's like a person walking round with a big neon sign above their head saying "this person is gay". And?! So bloody what? What's the big deal?

I just don't get it.

Squiff70 · 17/05/2022 00:26

BBC, not NBC. Autoincorrect!

Aaron69 · 17/05/2022 00:35

Message from a straight guy:
Being Gay doesn't make you any less of a man.
Bend you mind around that, homophobes!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/05/2022 00:36

Did you mean Justin Fashnu, @FlibbertyGiblets ? Or perhaps you did mean John, who according to Wikipedia 'was the younger brother of Justin Fashanu, disowned his brother after the latter came out as gay, telling The Voicee^ that Justin was "an outcast".' ....

No, there shouldn't need to be a fuss - but it's not that this young man is gay, it's that he's a gay footballer. He's brave because football has been a notoriously homophobic environment.

I'm sure we were told of another player within the last year, but news is fickle.

Yes, this. It's a big deal in the footballing world. It shouldn't be, but it is.

Aaron69 · 17/05/2022 00:44

I grew up in the era when gay guys got beat up on the docks and I always thought that was mental, but I lived in a world were being different got you attacked. And I did get attacked for various reasons. I am genuinely relieved that gay people - actually, all people, can start to be considered as human beings. What kind of 3rd world country are we to think otherwise?!!!

Come on people - evolve! Like even the government slogan says - I'm gay - get over it. You know if the government has to tell you then it's long past the point you should have done it already. To those still in doubt, please catch up with the 21st century. People are people. End of!

The kind of people it matters to are too dense to know how to use social media.

Strawberrypicnic · 17/05/2022 00:57

I agree, I was so impressed with his composure in the interview. I can't believe people are scoffing and saying it's not a big deal for an active male professional footballer to come out publicly as gay. Haven't you ever wondered why there is not a single out male player in the whole of the UK (except for Josh now)? It's not that he or anyone else wants it to be a big deal, the opposite in fact. He's put himself at risk of horrible homophobic abuse - potentially even from his own fans - by sticking his neck out to try and move the sport forward.

Strawberrypicnic · 17/05/2022 00:59

*Jake, not Josh, obvs!

I agree. Brave is a Ukranian giving the Russians Hell or cops tackling terrorists and so on. Jack is just being honest. I hope all goes well for him but he is neither amazing or heroic.

veronicagoldberg · 17/05/2022 05:54

The "why is this news" posters remind me of the naïve "but I don't see colour" brigade.

Football is notoriously homophobic. This guy coming out is a huge deal.

Please don't belittle gay people's struggles. Just because your world is a liberal accepting utopia, not everywhere is.

Its news worthy due to the huge number of homophobic straight people.

If straight people took more responsibility for homophobia, then everyone would be safe to come out, not have their sexuality fetch their work, we wouldn’t be verbally abused, we wouldn’t be beaten up, we would be able to hold out partners hand.

Of course it shouldn’t be a big deal. But it is, and this explains why.
