Just seen on Twitter that the CEO of the company that makes the switchblade drone is an Afghan refugee from the Soviet invasion

Satisfying.

Two months after warning that Beijing appeared poised to help Russia in its fight against Ukraine, senior U.S. officials say they have not detected overt Chinese military and economic support, a welcome development in the tense U.S.-China relationship

Not sure this story is being discussed enough. US sources saying China is not providing Russia extra economic and military aid. This would make a long war scenario much harder for Russia. Also a sign that China doesn’t want to get too close to Putin’s giant crapfest.

Very good news about China. China is a serious wildcard but seems under control for now.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 04/05/2022 06:46

I think China has enough on its plate at the moment, isn't it today when the lockdown in Shanghai is supposed to end ?

Ijsbear · 04/05/2022 08:45

For the first time in more than a month, President Macron had a telephone conversation with Russian President Putin

🤡🤦‍♀️ During the conversation, Putin called on the West to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine, saying they promote "atrocities", and said that Russia remains open to peace talks.

⚡️British intelligence report:

Russia has deployed 22 battalion tactical groups near Izyum in its attempt to advance along the northern axis of the Donbas.

Despite struggling to break through Ukrainian defenses and build momentum, Russia highly likely intends to proceed beyond Izyum to capture the cities of Kramatorsk and Sieverodonetsk.

Capturing these locations would consolidate Russian military control of the north-eastern Donbas and provide a staging point for their efforts to cut-off Ukrainian forces in the region.

(I guess the question is how good the battlegroups are).

🧑🏻‍💻The Institute for the Study of War noted that on April 30, Russia used "Onyx" anti-ship missiles during an attack on Odessa airport. That is, the invaders used "Onyx" for ground purposes, for which these missiles are not intended.

Analysts at the institute believe that this may indicate a shortage of other types of high-precision long-range missiles

Ijsbear · 04/05/2022 08:46

... I have no idea why that crossed itself out ...

Just reported on Times Radio that the EU is set to stop using Russian oil and gas within the next six months. It will take a year to fully achieve this.

Gas as well? That's good. We have family in Germany- we know how much they would like this to happen, and that it really won't be easy.

Ijsbear · 04/05/2022 09:17

That's good news. It's been a bit depressing how the Russian revenues have apparently actually increased though.

Long roundup!

UK MOD update- "Despite struggling to break through Ukrainian defences and build momentum, Russia highly likely intends to proceed beyond Izyum (Ізюм)to capture the cities of Kramatorsk (Краматорськ) and Severodonetsk (Сєвєродонецьк).

This article is posted by a very anti-Putin site, so keep the salt handy

www.themoscowtimes.com/2022/05/04/russia-hosts-lower-than-expected-number-of-ukrainian-refugees-a77570

Russia has spent one-tenth of its expected budget on Ukrainian refugees as some emergency accommodation sites remain empty, according to public procurement data and interviews with officials.

“Official figures say more than 1 million refugees have entered Russia, but we’re not feeling it,” Yelena Rusakova, a Moscow municipal deputy who volunteers to assist refugees, told The Moscow Times Russian Service.

Activists said most Ukrainians leave Russia’s temporary accommodation centers in an attempt to travel on to Europe or western Ukraine

Political analyst Konstantin Kalachev said that Moscow “overestimated the country’s appeal” even for Russian-speaking Ukrainians fleeing the war

“Even those who were sympathetic to Russia seem to be disappointed with the special operation,” he said

From the ISW:

Key Takeaways

Russian forces resumed air, artillery, and ground assaults on the Azovstal Steel Plant following the conclusion of the May 2 evacuation efforts.
Russian forces continued to regroup on the Donetsk-Luhansk axis in likely preparation for a westward advance in the direction of Lyman and Slovyansk.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted a counteroffensive that likely pushed Russian forces up to 40 km east of Kharkiv City.
Russian forces conducted limited ground offensives in Zaporizhia Oblast in the vicinity of Huliapole and intensified reconnaissance operations in the vicinity of Odesa amid growing tensions in Tra@EuromaidanPRI haven't copy pasted the whole thing but several sources seem to be confirming what the ISW are saying here:

.....These anecdotes clearly support the assessment that Putin has no intention of ceding occupied territories back to an independent Ukraine and is, at most, considering exactly how he intends to govern regions that Russia has illegally seized.

Ijsbear · 04/05/2022 09:17

bloody hell, Mumsnet, this new site is a pain

Igotjelly · 04/05/2022 09:21

Seems that there is going to be some sort of exemption for Hungary and Slovakia to allow the EU to pass this wider round of sanctions, including on oil and gas (just listening to BBC news). Also removing Russia’s largest bank from Swift.

Wannago · 04/05/2022 09:25

Seems Russia have decided that Hamas is a better bet than Israel.

Yes you’re right, still no consensus on gas. Seems to be Germany continuing to be the main blocker there.

Igotjelly · 04/05/2022 10:22

Wow they’re really determined to make an enemy of Israel, now claiming that Israeli mercenaries are in Mariupol.

MagicFox · 04/05/2022 10:33

Am i missing something? Why are they trying so hard to piss Israel off?

Ijsbear · 04/05/2022 10:40

Maybe Israel said no to Russia over something and Putin is vindictive

But my money is on that he's tring to extend influence in the rest of the ME

MagicFox · 04/05/2022 10:46

Yes ME makes sense, scary sense

OP posts:
TargusEasting · 04/05/2022 10:51

Almost certainly. A bit short-sighted in some ways because both the KSA and UAE want to diversify out of gas and oil, so naturally not a strategic partner. On the other hand Russia has other natural resources those countries will be able to acquire more cheaply (when the time comes).

All this continues to highlight the geopolitical importance of Turkey over the rest of this century. We will hear more of this country.

PerkingFaintly · 04/05/2022 11:06

But my money is on that he's tring to extend influence in the rest of the ME

Ohhhh, yes of course.

Again, it's all about the propaganda war. Russia as hero against imperial US/UK/NATO powers. <shhh, don't mention the Russian empire which only fell in 1989, and that Putin is trying to re-colonise independent countries>

WeAreTheHeroes · 04/05/2022 11:20

The US is an ally of Israel. I'd say Russia is trying to get the ME onside and showing contempt for Israel is one way of doing this. Israel has responded with a show of its military might, supplying Ukraine with weapons. So much dick waving going on when it's the lives of ordinary people being affected.

DuncinToffee · 04/05/2022 11:27

Brian Bonner @ BSBonner

Day 70: EU sanctions train picks up speed (oil & Sberbank), but still a long way to go to stop the Kremlin's war machine. How the EU takes on outliers Austria & Hungaria will be key. It's great that Germany appears on board in isolating Russia. The momentum is with Kyiv.

WeAreTheHeroes · 04/05/2022 11:28

Just to be, I'm not criticising Israel, I'm even more pissed off with the Russian leadership's stance and actions than I was before.

DuncinToffee · 04/05/2022 11:37

This is really remarkable. Soldiers from South Ossetia openly stating that the complete chaos and incompetence of the Russian command in Ukraine led them to desert and return home. They say huge amounts of equipment simply do not work
