What were you told growing up that were just pure lies!

Talking about this today with a friend, apart from the obvious Santa/Easter bunny/tooth fairy.

I was that chewing gum (as in the long flat ones back in the 90s) were made of cob webs. And if you ever swallowed gum it would stay inside for 7 years. 😂

That bread crusts would make your hair curly.

Has anyone else heard these or have any random things they were told as a child?!

If you sit too close to the telly you will get square eyes 😄😄

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/04/2022 19:46

If you pull a face and the wind changes direction, it will stay like that. I mean WTAF? 😂

Jalapinot · 26/04/2022 19:47

That the ice cream can played music when they had run out Hmm

seashaken · 26/04/2022 19:49

I was told all of the above apart from the chewing gum one 😂

Turnedacorner · 26/04/2022 19:50

Carrots 🥕 can make you see in the dark!?

HeadToToesNo · 26/04/2022 19:51

I was always told if you swim within an hour of eating you will definitely get cramp and drown. I'm nearly 40 and just learned that this is apparently not true!

seashaken · 26/04/2022 19:51

I grew up in a seaside town in Essex and my parents told me the lights across the water were France, and if I was good they'd take me there one day. I'm not sure how old I was when I worked out it was really Kent.

LadyAnglerfish · 26/04/2022 19:51

That if you poked a pencil in your cheeks every morning for six months you’d get very cute dimples.

huh.😒

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 26/04/2022 19:52

That the worst medicine tasted the better it is for you.

I believed it, too.

Hubblebubble · 26/04/2022 19:54

If you stepped on a shard of glass it would work it's way inwards towards your heart. My mother was a strange woman

2anddone · 26/04/2022 19:55

Step on a crack in the pavement you would break your mothers back....I used to almost leap to school there were so many!

stimpyyouidiot · 26/04/2022 19:57

That it's illegal to put the light on in the car

Lndnmummy · 26/04/2022 19:59

That biscuits were REALLY expensive. I met dh at uni and once when were walking around Tesco he said "let me grab some biscuits". I shouted "No!! we can't they are waaaaay to expensive". He promised me they were less than £1.00. I had no idea! I'd always avoided the biscuit isle as I was convinced they were so out of my reach. My mum could have just said I can't have them as too much sugar or whatever. She didn't have to lie😆

Waaaait a minute? Are you saying it is not illegal to do that?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/04/2022 20:00

That giant rhubarb is where elephants lay their eggs. (It's quite a specific one as a family member had an absolutely massive clump of giant rhubarb in their garden.)

Same! Only learnt this wasn't true recently and I'm 30

Brightrainbow · 26/04/2022 20:02

If you pick a dandelion, you’d pee the bed that night

Never put shoes on a table or someone will die

never sleep with a necklace on or you’ll die in your sleep-if you slept with a ring on,you’d lose your finger

the ice cream one

sprouts are baby cabbages

cabbage is really spinach and if you ate it all, you’d be as strong as popeye

if you hang a picture, and it fell down, someone close to you would die

always hang a horseshoe with the ‘ends’ facing up or you’ll end up with bad luck

never say ‘hail Mary’ in a mirror while turning 3 times-the devil will appear

its a wonder I grew up normal!

Carrots 🥕 can make you see in the dark!?

This isn't exactly lies - the vitamin a in carrots does help you see in the dark

CoodleMoodle · 26/04/2022 20:04

DM used to tell me I couldn't take any sort of teddy or toy into a shop, because they'd think we'd stolen it. Even if it was very well-loved (AKA filthy), they'd think we nicked it.

It was only when I had kids that I realised she a) didn't want to end up carrying it around and b) she didn't want to deal with the fallout if I lost it.

Ahwig · 26/04/2022 20:05

If you looked at yourself in the mirror for too long monkeys would appear. Strangely that didn’t put me off, I wanted to see those monkeys. I was also told a variation of the chewing gum story, but mine had the fact that the chewing gum not only stayed in your system for years but it wound itself round your organs.

DrBrennerFan · 26/04/2022 20:05

School days best 0f your life utter crap.

Onionpatch · 26/04/2022 20:06

If i dived in the pool with goggles on it would create a vacuum and my eyes would pop out.

Giggorata · 26/04/2022 20:06

That sitting close to the fire would give you chilblains.
That sitting close to the fire with your back to it would make you sick.
(Chance would have been a fine thing, bloody cold house)
That there was no such thing as ghosts. Yeah, what are those then?
That the skin off the rice pudding or custard was a delicacy. Yuck.
That new (fresh) bread would give you indigestion
That hard Jeyes lavatory paper did the job

CarParkHell · 26/04/2022 20:07

Lndnmummy · 26/04/2022 20:00

Ooh you beat me to it!
