What the hell has happened to Smarties?

I'm laying into my Easter stash which includes a tube (hexagonal crappy thing with no lid Angry) of Smarties, which I haven't had for years, and they're vile! The outside tastes like vegetables and the orange ones taste the same as the others. When did these monstrosities replace the real ones? I had no idea I was feeding my kids these, poor little cherubs.

Can you still buy 'fake' Smarties at the seaside? You know the ones, usually came in a plastic mini walking-stick contraption. They were a disgusting substitute, back in the day, but I'd happily eat them now!

Rockbird · 23/04/2022 17:32

Yes I did give them points for the smarties being inside the egg where they should be, but otherwise they're washed out imposters.

Thought the same when I had an orange smartie a couple of weeks ago OP. All of them were vile.

They're definitely not the same, I suspect potentially this is due to swapping the recipe to include less colourings/chemicals/sugar maybe?

AmberGer · 23/04/2022 19:20

I was given a smarties Easter egg. I had two bites of the egg and 1 smartie then gave the rest to dh. Fucking horrible 🤢

BusySittingDown · 23/04/2022 19:28

I haven't had Smarties for years! Now you've made me fancy some, which is weird because the purpose of the thread is slagging them off 😂. It sounds like I would be sorely disappointed!

when I was little I used to have a tube of Smarties a DAY!!! Every day after school my mum would pick me up and give me a tube of Smarties that she got from the corner newsagents when she went to get the daily paper. In later years it changed to a packet of Rolos (and no, I didn't love anyone enough to give them my last one - I don't share food!)

Aw, I used to like taking the plastic lid off to see what letter was there that day 😃. Why did they have letters on?

Greensleeves · 23/04/2022 19:32

They taste of chalk now. Such a shame as they used to be a favourite.

I was pleasantly surprised by my creme egg this year though. Last year the inside was a sort of stiff dry fondant which was very disappointing. This year's, for some reason, had proper runny innards. The chocolate still tastes like axle grease though.

removed E numbers

I never buy Nestle products having supported the boycott for a couple of decades, but I remember the cardboard tubes with the plastic lid. Each lid had a letter embossed on it, the challenge was to collect the whole alphabet.

Fantastic times. They were beautiful to look through into the light too. Magical.

HeadNorth · 23/04/2022 19:37

I remember a church sermon in my childhood where the minister likened Christians to the orange smartie. Random, but to be fair it has stuck with me. If the orange smartie now tastes the same as the rest, then what does that mean for his theological point? Troubling times.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 23/04/2022 19:49

Orange Smarties no longer taste of orange?😮☹️

They’re supposed to be made with orange oil:

Hadn’t realised the flavours had changed.
The colour changes will be to do with them not using E numbers and only natural colourings.

I'm afraid only they have the answer!

Brilliant. Grin

winterchills · 23/04/2022 21:05

Sorry completely off topic but talking about chocolate, I've had a fair few cream eggs recently and every time I taste a hint of mint! Anyone else noticed this?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/04/2022 23:40

youngestisapsycho · 23/04/2022 23:43

The orange ones now have an orange taste in the coating but it used to be the chocolate inside that was choc orange. Now it's boring chocolate like the rest.

ClafoutisSurprise · 23/04/2022 23:53

Just reading this makes me feel a bit sick. Can’t remember the last time I had one as I find this filling so disgusting. It definitely goes back more than a year. I think the worst chocolate I’ve ever had was the creme egg twisted bar and the mini ones in Heroes. Somehow the format made them even more revolting.

Beat me to it 😀

Oh no how awful! I was always puzzled that DD doesn’t seem to like the classic kids’ chocolate that I used to love, like Smarties — that must be why. I don’t have a sweet tooth as an adult so haven’t had any in years, but I have many happy memories of my Smarties Easter eggs. The orange ones definitely had an orange chocolate filling!

And I bought DD a Toblerone for Easter and she was eating it earlier - she gave me a triangle and it tasted nothing at all like it used to! Instead it had exactly that claggy soft mouth feel and palm-oily taste that Cadbury’s all now has. It simply didn’t have either the milky taste or hard texture of a proper Toblerone. I was horrified 😢

Beamur · 24/04/2022 00:08

The mini smarties taste marginally better.

LoveSpringDaffs · 24/04/2022 00:48

Oh bugger!!!

i bought myself the small smarties EE as it's the only one I can find that has loose treats inside as they all used to be! It's the essence of childhood Easter to me!

I've had to wait to eat it because my blood sugars have been completely haywire, so been waiting until they settle.

disappointing to hear everyone saying it doesn't taste nice. It's worse than wasting chocolate calories , it's wasting carb count!!!

etulosba · 24/04/2022 01:03

Natural colourings have E numbers.
