What the hell has happened to Smarties?

I'm laying into my Easter stash which includes a tube (hexagonal crappy thing with no lid Angry) of Smarties, which I haven't had for years, and they're vile! The outside tastes like vegetables and the orange ones taste the same as the others. When did these monstrosities replace the real ones? I had no idea I was feeding my kids these, poor little cherubs.

I remember the old style, but who made them before Nestle?

I never buy Nestle products having supported the boycott for a couple of decades, but I remember the cardboard tubes with the plastic lid. Each lid had a letter embossed on it, the challenge was to collect the whole alphabet.

I embarked on a project to collect a scrabble set. I got pretty close!

Yes the recipe has changed to reduce sugar and no artificial colourings.
The plastic lid is gone because no one wants plastic anymore.
all of these changes are down to consumer pressure and govt policy on corporate social responsibility. And yes nestle have acknowledged many times that their formula marketing has to meet the strictest ethical standards.

The change to hexagonal tubes though was down to cost. Nestle said they are much cheaper to make than the cylinders.

and probably the natural colourings are more expensive than the artificial ones…

I can get on board with all the environmental concerns, but I can’t forgive the replacement of the actual chocolate with palm-oil-filled cheap mush. Hmm
