'My bad'

My teenagers say it and now my husband said it! Might have to punch him in the face! I hate it!
It really gets me angry. I cringe when I hear it.

@WallopBang

I really dislike it.

I've seen it used at work on emails etc and think it looks really unprofessional.

Even in a social text it still grates.

Wow. I can't imagine it on an e Mail at work! That so awful. I think of children when I hear it! I have the shivers now.

My bad what? My bad back?

What's wrong with "my mistake"?

LittleDidSheKnow · 13/04/2022 22:03

Indeed @SquirrelG it's quite shocking how anti-American a large number of MNers are.
I wonder if they'd prefer the ridiculous French approach to language preservation.

minou123 · 13/04/2022 22:05

I love it too!

I use it for lighthearted situations.
Forgot to turn the kitchen light off? My bad
Accidently dropped my phone? My bad
Forgot to tell my mum that her favourite programme was back on? My bad

Kite22 · 13/04/2022 22:15

I quite like it.
Language evolves.
It is a good short hand apology, or way of holding hands up to say "Yup, I made a mistake".

Wutipg · 13/04/2022 22:37

I quite like it too ! Nice for people to apologise for a mistake.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/04/2022 22:40

I say it sarcastically

upinaballoon · 13/04/2022 23:18

Is it short for "That was my fault"/"That was my mistake, sorry"?

DaveDave · 13/04/2022 23:23

I don't like it but Mea Culpa makes me want to throw things, it sounds so pompous!

MissStarry · 13/04/2022 23:35

Sounds fine being said by an American/American accent, sounds unusual and toe-curling in an English accent, nor least because there seems to often be an unnaturally quirky and vague fauxMercian undertwang and often accompanied an affected micro-shrug, all of which combine in quite a strange and irritating way.

MissStarry · 13/04/2022 23:36

Faux-merican*

nearlyspringyay · 13/04/2022 23:37

My teens would never say it, they're so over it don't you know?!

minou123 · 13/04/2022 23:37

@upinaballoon

Is it short for "That was my fault"/"That was my mistake, sorry"?
Yes, but without the "sorry" bit.
Honeyroar · 13/04/2022 23:38

I hate it. Im not even sure what it’s supposed to mean. (This thread has explained it!) People saying it sound like morons to me, like they’re pretending to baby talk.

Am I allowed to use it in my Eastern European hodge podge accent? Hmm
TempNameChangexx · 14/04/2022 00:49

Sounds terrible in any accent.....
It always sounds like the person saying it is either thick or has a very very limited vocabulary

MissStarry · 14/04/2022 01:52

@ldontWanna umm yes? I’ve never deigned myself Solomon of linguistics in terms of assigning permissions, I truly believe it’s down to the individual of any accent to choose to use any cheesy, lazily-phrased, childish soundbites available if that’s how they wish to express themselves.

Wintersgirl · 14/04/2022 01:58

Can't bloody stand it...

Fl0w3ry · 14/04/2022 02:12

I really hate it.

Qmood · 14/04/2022 02:14

I like it and use it fairly regularly for Lighthearted things and have done for years, remember saying it back in school in the 90/00s.

RoseMartha · 14/04/2022 02:18

I hate it too. Why cant people just say sorry?

ALittleBitofVitriol · 14/04/2022 02:23

My teen says it too and it grates! Yes, I know it's your bad, I'm the one who pointed it out, just apologise and fix it ffs.
😬😬😬

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 14/04/2022 02:28

@RoseMartha

I do. I say "Sorry! My bad!"
SirenSays · 14/04/2022 02:38

Love it and no worries 👍

mpsw · 14/04/2022 06:53

I always thoughout military slang, as that's where I first came across it - must have been back in the 90s.

It does get threads on MN from time to time saying how awful some posters think it is.
