Are mirrors at night a bit spooky

I have always had this fear of looking into a mirror at night, I think it's due to watching totally inappropriate horror films at a young age in the 80s Confused I am now approaching 40 and just had to use the bathroom in the night and have realised how completely daft it is to have to avoid looking at the mirror and run away quickly in the middle of the night Blush

Anyone else convinced that if you look in a mirror at night Bloody Mary or some other kind of awful ghost will appear over your shoulder BlushGrin

I have not watched enough horror movies evidently!

Mine's been since I was very small. Definitely pre horror movies. Same with clowns. I had to be taken home from a circle aged about 4, screaming my head off. Blush

Have you seen the film Mirrors with Kiefer Sutherland - that scared me!

Solosunrise · 06/04/2022 17:23

I scared myself years ago as a teenager when I 'lived in' at a job I had ( caravan) I caught sight of myself in an uncurtained window unexpectedly while I had a green face pack on one evening. Very briefly, I was absolutely terrified! It took some time for my heart to stop hammering. I was quite anxious back then and didn't really like living in a caravan on my own. (I did not last very long in that job!)

@Vegansausageroll

Lol, not at all scary, I’ve got one diagonally opposite my bed and never seen the devil Grin.
That's because he only watches you when you're not looking Wink
ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 06/04/2022 17:31

Yep. I don't wash my face when DH is away for a night because I won't look in the mirror in the en suite! Damn Candyman!

ThreeRingCircus · 06/04/2022 17:54

I thought this was just me 😂. I hate mirrors at night.....but I have a very overactive imagination. I point blank refuse to have a mirror where I could see it in bed at night. Mirrored wardrobe doors are a complete no no for me.

missbunnyrabbit · 06/04/2022 17:54

Yep, windows and mirrors scare me at night. Who knows what you'll see.

Malibuismysecrethome · 06/04/2022 17:54

I was staying with my mum and sisters in a caravan one Easter. It was on a cliff and a really stormy night. My mum started to make a drink and then screamed, there was a man staring in at us.

Oldandcobwebby · 06/04/2022 18:21

I have a mirror in my bedroom, and I am often frightened to see a decrepit old man in it. This seems to be in the daylight, too. It's horrifyingly.

VioletWillow · 06/04/2022 18:27

I loathe mirrors at night. I feel vindicated now seeing all these comments 😂😂

nocoolnamesleft · 06/04/2022 18:40

Mirrors at night do freak me out, and have as long as I can remember. The only exception was a heavy Victorian ornately framed mirror in my grandma's Victorian house. That one freaked me out in the daytime, too.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 06/04/2022 19:06

I love scary films and stories, etc. So I don't look into the mirror during the night, deliberately make sure I don't look into that direction. Got so used to doing it now I don't even see the mirror in my room or bathroom without thinking about it.

Greatoutdoors · 06/04/2022 19:09

Yep - also the reflection in the window when the lights are on and the curtains are open. My XH used to work shifts and thought it was hilarious to appear at the window when I was doing the pots when he came in from a late shift. Scared the shit out of me 😂

sophienelisse · 06/04/2022 19:14

I'm 43 and I won't look at them either.

I have an on going fear about black eyed kids that I have posted about before under a different name and I don't think about them then as soon as my DH is away bang it's all I can think about. I know it's ridiculous but I put the fear of god I to myself.

I brush my teeth with my back to the mirror when he isn't here.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 06/04/2022 19:17

They feature in a lot of horror films, so I understand the spookiness, but it doesn't bother me.

However, every time I get in the car in the dark I Hate that first look at the rear view mirror as I'm sure 'something' sitti g in the back seat is going to meet my gaze.

My mum was v. superstitious about getting between 2 mirrors. And it used to be a thing to cover mirrors when someone died. And 7 years bad luck if you break one. I suspect people have been freaked out by mirrors since they were invented.

Blackmagicqueen · 06/04/2022 19:17

I always get spooked at night in the house generally and I'm in my 30's! I literally have to have a word with myself: "you're a grownup Blackmagic don't be so silly!"

imnottoofussed · 06/04/2022 19:22

I'm only freaked out by the bathroom mirror at night. Definitely candy man. My massive bedroom mirror is fine I dont even really think about it I just walk past it in the night. My dd however covers her bedroom mirror at night even though she's not seen any horror films involving mirrors.

NewYearEveryYear · 06/04/2022 19:24

I read a book as a young teen called A Stranger With My Face... It was about a secret identical twin who astral projected into her twin's life to steal her body... And was first seen... In a mirror at night.

And that, folks, was the last time I willingly looked in a mirror at night.

Thatsplentyjack · 06/04/2022 19:27

I do this too. I have a big floor standing mirror in my room and have to make sure I don't look in it when it's dark 😂 I try to pretend to myself that not actually avoiding looking at it, but I am.

hypaingea · 06/04/2022 19:30

Not mirrors for me but I can’t look out a window in the dark just in case there’s a face staring back at me. Just no.

yep!

I also don't stand in front of open doors if the lights are off.

Yup me too. I'm the biggest shite bag when it comes to the paranormal. I'm not really scared of anything else. For example, if I'm out at night alone, I'm more worried that a werewolf or some mythical creature will come and attack me than an actual human, which is seriously ridiculous.

always check the backseat first!

Theforest · 06/04/2022 19:33

I avoid the bathroom mirror during the night in the dark deffo

I think like this 😆

tintodeverano2 · 06/04/2022 19:36

Wow I feel more normal now Grin

Mirrors and windows at night are horrible. Always scared that I will see something looking back at me.
