MumsNet or GransNet? Inbetweenie!

Inbetweenie993 · 05/04/2022 15:41

Hello world! I have been a 'sleeping observer' on MumsNet for a while now, and have appreciated the wit and wisdom I have found, and finally joined!

I hope I qualify, as I have never had the privilege of being a mother and therefore obviously not a gran!

As an Inbetweenie aged 59, living alone (with 3 fur babies) and coping with 4 older siblings I am not sure whether MumsNet or GransNet is for me. I have had a interesting life so far... divorced, found Mr. Right and then he died early...

Can anyone advise where I might fit in your wonderful supportive world?

Love to hear from someone, anyone

I can’t say I have spent any time on gransnet but there’s no age limit on mumsnet (or any requirement to be a mum) so I would say whatever you enjoy most is fine!

Alaasi · 05/04/2022 15:51

Use both and see if you want to use both or if you feel more at home with a certain one!

HirplesWithHaggis · 05/04/2022 15:55

I'm also 59 (for another few weeks), but I'm both a mother and a grandmother. I prefer MN to GN, I like the swearies! Grin

There are so many different topic areas on MN there's something for everybody. I'm a similar age to you and I've never even been on GN.

Kanaloa · 05/04/2022 15:59

Probably mumsnet because the pets and chat sections are likely to be relevant to you. There are people of all ages with or without children.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 05/04/2022 16:05

Like you, I’m old enough to be a gran but I’m not one. And not a mam in the physical sense either.

There are all types of everyone on MN - I can’t speak for GN as I’ve not been there.

Flirt with both and you’ll find your people. There are some bloody lovely people on MN and GN will be no different I’m sure 🙂

Antarcticant · 05/04/2022 16:10

I had a look at Gransnet - like you, OP, I'm neither mum nor gran and never will be, but I'm old enough to have been a gran if I'd had a DC in my 20s and they'd followed suit. Two things made me think it wasn't for me:

  1. Swearing appears to be strongly discouraged
  2. You only seem to be allowed one name change

On the plus side it was strong on game/puzzle threads which I enjoy, so I don't rule it out completely - just don't think I would fit in there very well at my present stage of life.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 05/04/2022 16:11

Ah.

I’m not sure I’d be welcomed there 😳

marqueses · 05/04/2022 16:15

I'm old enough to be a grandmother but it wouldnt ever occur to me to post on gransnet

I'd say stay on here as once you've hidden all the parenting related topics I'd say the majority of threads actually have nothing to do with being a parent.

Chewbecca · 05/04/2022 16:45

I went onto Gransnet for a while but got a hard time from a regular poster because my username was too similar to theirs. Felt very unwelcome and returned here!

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/04/2022 16:51

Welcome @Inbetweenie993I. I'm several years older than you, not a mother and Mumsnet suits me just fine Smile

ginslinger · 05/04/2022 16:52

I'm in my 60s and staying right here

Createabitofuntruenews · 05/04/2022 16:57

I am a lot older than you OP.I am a Grandmother but I find Gransnet is years behind the times.

I much prefer it on here.Gransnet has many regular posters who are not welcoming to newcomers.

Oddbutnotodd · 05/04/2022 17:01

I’m older than you and find the general tone of Gransnet to be much older and more conservative in tone. The conversation on Mumsnet is much more interesting.
I occasionally look on Gransnet but never really stray. It’s a bit like reading The Lady magazine rather than Cosmopolitan.

starfishmummy · 05/04/2022 17:09

Both are fine.

Solosunrise · 05/04/2022 17:11

I don't enjoy gransnet at all!

RobertsRadio · 05/04/2022 17:20

I'm a bit older than you Op, but I quite like to swear sometimes, so I feel at home here (mostly).

Oh yes, the magazine analogy is spot on.
SoManyTshirts · 05/04/2022 17:24

Slightly older, I prefer mumsnet but lurk Gransnet for information on hip replacements and how to handle the considerably older man.

I’m probably in denial about my proper place but I feel this is my political home.

😂

What did she say?

NO! You can’t be Chewbecca because I’m Chewwits!! Surely everyone just laughed and thought she was a bit of a fruit loop?

elp30 · 05/04/2022 17:25

I am American and I initially joined Mumsnet years ago because I wanted to continue keeping in touch with happenings in the UK (I lived there for almost nine years as my husband is English) and I had young children at home.

At age 41, I became a grandmother but I still had a 15 & 12-year-old at home and took a look at Gransnet and it was too old for me.

I'm 51 now and it's still too old for me.

I'm staying put here.

Chewbecca · 05/04/2022 17:40

Quite the opposite kanaola, it was widely agreed that similar names confusing. A thread was later started saying they would like GNHQ to prevent registration of similar names.

It made the whole place feel very cliquey.

Kanaloa · 05/04/2022 17:46

I love it, that’s hilarious! Off to find someone whose username sounds vaguely like mine to berate them.

I might join grandsnet now, it sounds very dramatic and I love drama.

Inbetweenie993 · 05/04/2022 21:09

What a lovely welcome! I am definitely more Cosmo than The Lady or knitting weekly - I do swear, and I don't make jam.( Well I did once and you could slice it...)

Staying here and will be coming back for advice and laughs. Thanks to all who replied, don't feel so alone in the world now.

Big Grin face, but haven't worked out how to do that yet!!!

I joined Gransnet years ago. I think I posted once on there. It's a local site for local people Royston Vasey vibe.
I go back for a look now and then, just to see if they still curtain twitch when there's a newbie in town.
MN is totally different. Mostly.Grin
