Today’s was quite pleasant too. I solved Semantle #69 in 40 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 9.40. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #10. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 70.08 (999/1000).

Oh! I thought I'd just get started before lights out, try to get a green... I didn't get any, my highest word before the solution had a similarity of 19.58 (though really I think it should have been higher).

FINALLY! Took me embarrassingly long but I couldn’t give up! Spent ages generating lots of low greens and a few middling and the word was one of those ‘did I not try that before?’ moments… I’ll admit to having made several (hundreds?!) random attempts out of frustration

Found that really satisfying today!

I liked todays. Nice and logical - it was 993 that really unlocked it for me, but for the final few guesses I had to resort to the thesaurus as this theme really isn't one that is naturally in my everyday language.

If it takes its words from press reports, I wonder if it’s randomness is related to how concrete or abstract the target word is? If a word is quite a concrete concept, there may be stronger associations with a smaller selection of words, whereas an abstract concept like the day before yesterday could have all sorts of words associated with it - at least in the view of the algorithm making the lists, which of course is not a human? I don’t know, maybe I’m just trying to find excuses for how stuck I got on that one though
