I can't seem to get beyond 998. I have 989, 992, 995 and 998 so surely I must be on the right lines?!

You are on the right lines but try a word that is similar but to a lesser degree. Hope that makes sense!

Those are all quite intense forms of the target word - it’s something that is present in all those but a milder version I guess

I'm trying too hard, most days having a good vocabulary seems to be a disadvantage, they are normal words!

I have a few greens, 515, 585, 744 864 and 876. And a few lower ones.
Apart from 585 they all seem to be synonyms.
Am I in the right area?

They're a bit of a red herring - the target words might lead to that group of synonyms you've found, but is not a synonym of them in itself.

That was disappointing, it’s one extreme to the other here!

I can't work it out from the clue about 981, is anyone able to hint in another way?

I also have: 821, 791, 771, 682, 529…all kind of on a similar negative theme! Positive ones I’ve tried haven’t been green.
