High NT fluid on 12 week scan

MySoldier · 01/04/2022 14:28

I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and in my ultrasound it was found that my baby has high NT fluid of 7.0 and on the report it has a single umbilical artery.
Bubs heart rate was normal at 161 bpm and was wriggling and perfect in size- this is my hope I am holding on to.
Without any empathy the radiologist doctor told me the survival of a healthy pregnancy was not very good at all.
My own GP told me that we will just have to monitor my pregnancy closely. I am waiting on my 12 week blood results and NIPT test results and have my first appointment with the women’s health next week. I am trying to stay positive but the endless amount of googling and waiting is killing me. Does anyone have any similar stories?

Hi, I'm currently going through the exact same thing, high nf of 7mm, waiting on NIPT test results, in for another scan on wednesday so fingers crossed for both of us. I've read some positive stories of good results with high nf so I'm really hoping for the best!

MySoldier · 04/04/2022 10:22

I am still waiting my on my NIPT results but they combined the 12 week blood test and my ultrasound and it came back today with a 1 in 2 chance of Down syndrome. I am definitely shocked by the percentage, a little annoyed that they base it on a combined result of blood and ultrasound but also a little relieved that they are looking at Down syndrome.
My baby is perfectly formed in size and facial features with a nasal bone and I was thinking the absolute worse of syndromes or a heart condition. Now more waiting game!!
The stress they put on you without any answers is cruel!!! I wish you all the best for a positive result!!

I'm waiting on results next few days hopefully, I'm delighted ur results are a bit clearer. It's the waiting that's a killer! I'm in the same percentage for downs, it's the trisomys that I'm truly frightened of but we must remain positive for our little ones and hope for a good outcome- keep me updated as u go on! When is ur next scan & blood results due?
You are so right, they tell you the very worst to expect!

I got my NIPT results back today!!
We are having a little girl!!
Down syndrome, Trisomy 21 and 18 are now low risk but my baby is high risk for SCV which is a sex chromosome abnormality. I don’t get how they can just jump from one thing to another. The next hurdle face palm
I am awaiting a phone call from the Hospital about what we do further but I have an amnio test booked for a couple of weeks time.

Thats great news, I am delighted that you got some of the results back and that so far is good news! I haven't heard anything yet. The waiting is killing me. I am in for another scan tomorrow and hoping that they have the results there too! I also have an amino booked for three weeks time. I just want the initial results - it is so frustrating that they take so long!

MISSYM4478 · 05/04/2022 16:40

How long did it take to get your results back? I am in Ireland so they said it would be 5-7 working days

MySoldier · 05/04/2022 16:47

They rang the following day after I had my NIPT test and told me that the bloods had been contaminated so I had to have a second lot taken. They saw that I was quite upset about the mishap so they rushed them through as urgent. I took them on the Thursday midday and had the results by Tuesday. I was soo surprised as originally I was told 3-8 business days then 5-10. I hope you get some positivity from your next scan!

Just an update, scan today, baby very active, fine strong heartbeat. They couldn't measure the fluid. Back again on Monday to see the specialist! No bloods back yet, I'm hoping I'll get them before the weekend!

MySoldier · 10/04/2022 13:00

I hope they come back soon!! Waiting is the worse!! No change for me.. just waiting until my amnio test on the 2nd. :

I've to go on my own as there is nobody to mind our little boy only daddy so I'm dreading it! Keep your fingers crossed for some good news for me!!!

Just an update, my bloods came back positive for T21, we are absolutely devastated. Scan today, fluid reduced to 4mm, baby very active, having amnio next week to confirm for sure and then we have decision to make. So so sad

MySoldier · 12/04/2022 10:58

I am so sorry you did not get the news you were hoping for :( I know that it is easier said than done but try not to think about it until the amnio. With all my googling and I know of a few friends who have had a similar experience they received a high reading for Trisomy 21, some for each of their children and their babies were born perfectly happy and healthy with no signs of trisomy. Did they give you a percentage?
Even my initial reading being a 1 in 2 for trisomy 21 I read was 50%. Does your baby have a nasal bone? As I was also told by the radiologist that was a promising sign in not having trisomy 21. They did not give me a percentage for turners and just said it was high so I have no idea. I also read the baby can start to absorb the NT fluid after 14 weeks so I am thinking of doing a 3D scan maybe before my amnio for either a slight peace of mind or so it is not a huge shock with my test and scan. The medical system can be so brutal.

MISSYM4478 · 12/04/2022 13:34

Thank you - I am high - 80%. I am clinging onto the 20% chance that they are wrong! I am 43 and slightly overweight so that coupled with my high NF puts me off the chart. If the amnio comes back as positive then I will have to travel to UK for termination which is just a nightmare to think about. My partner & I have a 2yr old and just don't think we could put the responsibility on him when we are gone to take care of a sibling. It is just not fair! On a positive my Dr measured the NF and it was less than 4mm so he said that this was very positive as 13 weeks!but didn't give me much hope for a negative on the amnio.

MySoldier · 14/04/2022 09:41

Just like what reads on the top of your ultrasound images they are not for diagnostic purposes and neither should be your weight or age. Those assumptions make me so angry as plenty of older or overweight women still have healthy babies but they only read the negatives and not the positives. Why cant they say hey because of your weight and age lets do an amnio test for precaution instead of we give you a 20% chance of success because of the contributing factors and you can stress for the next 3 weeks while we wait to test you..
If your percentage is increased because of your weight and age does that mean every pregnancy going forward will be of concern or that things can be perfectly fine but because of your weight and age they will need to monitor you closely. To me I think they are the same circumstances but you should be told and believe the second one.
You got pregnant regardless of your weight and age and that is a huge positive, your body is perfectly healthy enough to of allowed you to when so many women can’t. Just have faith in the universe to tell its story. There is always a reason why. x

Hello @MySoldier and @missym4478

I am currently going through something similar. NT of 7mm, waiting for next week to have another scan (baby was in poor position so I am clinging onto hope that measurements are wrong....)

How are you both getting on?

MISSYM4478 · 16/04/2022 19:20

@MySoldier - thank you, I had my beautiful little boy 2 years ago - no issues but it is just what it is now! From reading I think It'll be a miracle if the amnio is negative but I am praying & hoping whilst trying to be positive - amnio this thurs and it cant come soon enough as I'm just not sleeping and worrying!

@annny27 - I've my fingers crossed for you hun, it's the worst feeling and they really give you the worst outlook do you need to try & remain positive- when is ur next scan?

Annny27 · 16/04/2022 19:37

@MISSYM4478 thank you lovely - it's such a tough time! And rescan on Tuesday or Wednesday (Bank holiday delayed it!)

I saw your post about having to go to UK if things aren't as expected. Does that mean tfmr isn't allowed in Ireland (assume that's where you are?

MISSYM4478 · 16/04/2022 19:49

@Annny27 - yes, unfortunately it isnt allowed for trisomy 21 only for the other two. For myself & my partner it's been so tough as its not a choice we make easily but as older parents we have a responsibility for our 2 year old and do not want him to have to care for a sibling when we are gone. We have done a ton of research and know that some people with DS lead fulfilled lives but their are others that are very poorly from the start and unfortunately you dont know until they are born. We are just hoping against all odds that our little one is the 20% that is ok. It is in the hands of the gods now and all we can do is wait, pray & hope for the best!
I wish you a successful scan on Wednesday, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you & bub!

Annny27 · 16/04/2022 19:58

@MISSYM4478 that's so tricky and an unnecessary stress on parents to have to travel to UK on top of the heartache they are already feeling!

Thank you - will keep you both updated! And will be keeping my fingers crossed for your little one too 💗

emma1103 · 16/04/2022 20:04

I had a similar story, but with a higher NT of 9.9. Im not going to elaborate as my story didn't end well, but i will say, if you want to talk about it at any point of the journey please message me x

Annny27 · 16/04/2022 20:25

@emma1103 in my frantic googling over the past few days I have actually read your story a few times 💗 thanks for sharing and offering support xx

MISSYM4478 · 23/04/2022 08:24

Just an update, had my amniocentesis on Thursday, very straightforward, and quick and painless. They got clear fluid, samples being sent to uk for analysis & I should have initial results early next week. I am praying for a miracle. Hope you ladies are doing well? It's the mental anguish that is the hardest to cope with.

Annny27 · 23/04/2022 11:57

Glad it went okay @MISSYM4478 I hope it comes back clear for you!

I had my NIPT on Wednesday (they rescanned as the first was in a bad position so they weren't sure of the 7mm reading and it came back at 4.9 so still previously high but a bit lower 🤞)

Even if I had wanted the cvs last week they couldn't do it as placenta was behind baby.

@MySoldier how are you doing?
