Anyone want to chat about ice cream? Particularly fruit versus chocolate

I wanted some strawberry ice cream when I was in a big Sainsbury's but all they had was either a dreadful looking whipped 'viennetta' type thing or a multi pack of tubs containing one tub of strawberry.

Meanwhile every single conceivable variation on chocolate/caramel/salted caramel/chocolate cookie/double fudge etc filled almost the entire freezer.

Do people not really like strawberry ice cream any more? I do love chocolate flavours but I'd like the choice.

Also, is lemon ice cream a thing? Not sorbet, actual ice cream? I've had a craving for that lately too but I'm not sure it exists.

I'm not sure I've ever ever tasted a nice chocolate ice cream.

Malalaa · 01/04/2022 15:20

Chocolate ice cream is only good whizzed up in a blender with cherries and milk.

Strawberry is good. Raspberry ripple is better!

Sunnytwobridges · 01/04/2022 15:23

I hate chocolate and strawberry ice cream. But I love vanilla and the caramel flavored kind. I do like strawberry flavored cold iced drinks like slushies, it just doesn't taste right as an ice cream flavor to me.

I do not consider Ben &Jerry's to be ice cream (although I have eaten it often enough in my life). It is more like crushed cakes/biscuits/nuts mixed into a custard base. Real ice cream should not be loaded with 3d chunks which distract from the fact that the main point of it (the actual ice cream) is only average.

I know! Cherry Garcia was the best!

Nigella has a fab recipe for lemon ice cream that is about 5 minutes work. You don't have to whisk or anything. Just soak icing sugar in lemon juice and rind. Add whipped cream. Freeze. Go somewhere quiet where you won't be disturbed and eat.

That recipe adds water to the cream but I've never used the water.

Another cherry Garcia fan here 😭

This seems true although I had never really thought about it. The ones with the “cores” in them are just plain weird.

I prefer Häagen-Dazs over Ben & Jerry’s any day.

But Gelato is also nice. Especially in Italy.

I am very fond of chocolate ice cream but a good strawberry is probably my favourite. I once had apple and cinnamon which was surprisingly good, and I've had cherry a lot too - proper slightly sour cherry but so so delicious. I have also had gooseberry which I loved but never found again. If you're ever in Cambridge in summer there are massive massive queues for Aromi gelato but they have fruity ice cream galore... Sorry, realised I could probably write a PhD on ice cream at this point!

I tend to agree about most shop bought chocolate ice-cream. One of our DC has an ice-cream machine and makes the best ice-creams I have ever tasted, including chocolate. The secret is to use top quality ingredients. I live it in the summer when they invite us over for a tasting afternoon!

TobyMory · 01/04/2022 17:15

I’m not fussy about ice cream flavour as long as it’s good ice cream. Marks and Spencer do a lemon meringue ice cream which is lovely.

ApolloandDaphne · 01/04/2022 18:09

I don't like fruit ice creams only chocolate/caramel types. DH on the other hand only likes fruit types. I do like a mango sorbet though.

caulkheaded · 01/04/2022 18:17

I don’t like I’ve cream EXCEPT the blackcurrant and clotted cream one mentioned on here a few times. I love it and also think about it more than any other food.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/04/2022 20:25

Ican't decide if I should go to M&S and buy some lemon icecream or if I should crack out the icecream maker and make cherry or blackcurrent icecream. Decisions decisions.
