Anyone want to chat about ice cream? Particularly fruit versus chocolate

I wanted some strawberry ice cream when I was in a big Sainsbury's but all they had was either a dreadful looking whipped 'viennetta' type thing or a multi pack of tubs containing one tub of strawberry.

Meanwhile every single conceivable variation on chocolate/caramel/salted caramel/chocolate cookie/double fudge etc filled almost the entire freezer.

Do people not really like strawberry ice cream any more? I do love chocolate flavours but I'd like the choice.

Also, is lemon ice cream a thing? Not sorbet, actual ice cream? I've had a craving for that lately too but I'm not sure it exists.

The best cone ice cream i've had was 2 years ago at Lulworth Cove in Dorset.

It was clotted cream and fudge and i went back for a second as soon as i'd finished the first i still think about it! Grin

Going back this year so guess where i'll be heading first? Grin

Compketely agree. Love fruit icecream (and nut icecream), ambivalent about chocolate and dough pieces in my icecream. It's definitely Ben and Jerry's fault!

Waitrose carry Darlish which have lovely Persian flavours. Their own no. 1 range also includes e.g. blackcurrant sorbet swirled with vanilla.

AmyDudley · 01/04/2022 13:48

I love strawberry ice cream - my favourite flavour - I really dislike chocolate flavoured ice cream - don't mind a bit of chocolate on the ice cream but not the ice cream itself being chocolate.
I noticed the other day that M and S do their version of a magnum with blood orange flavoured ice cream inside, which sounds good (haven;t had a chance to sample it yet).

Hate all these cookie dough type flavours and anything which involves soggy cake stuff in the ice cream. Sainsbury's do a coffee icecream with crunchy coffee beans in it which is lovely.

Butteredtoast55 · 01/04/2022 14:20

I used to make a glorious strawberry ice cream with the glut of strawberries in the summer.....when did I stop doing that? I must have a go this summer.
I LOVE raspberry ripple and it is increasingly difficult to get hold of, but I am not going to complain at the many chocolate flavours as I do like them, it is just that they are better in small doses.

Readyforspring · 01/04/2022 14:23

I rarely eat ice cream but hate chocolate ones thanks to a dinner lady force feeding me one when i was 6.
I like a boring old vanillia. Aldi and lidl ones are nice

SAB10 · 01/04/2022 14:26

I feel this way about mint choc chip Sad. It's usually either massive tops of nasty synthetic soft scoop, or really expensive fancy stuff. I've only come across a decent supermarket version in Tesco. Such a shame as it is the food of the gods!

1TheCircle · 01/04/2022 14:29

This is amazing. Tastes of fresh raspberries and clotted cream. We get it in Tesco.

I love it all Grin strawberry, blackcurrant cheesecake flavour, clotted cream, peanut butter, caramel, brown bread
Just give me ice cream Grin

TakeMeToYourLiar · 01/04/2022 14:37

@ouch321

I wish you could buy soft serve ice cream at the supermarket- the type you get from an ice cream van, a Mr Whippy
You can, Cornetto soft
IceVolcanoes · 01/04/2022 14:40

I think m&s do lemon curd ice cream. I’ve had done from there in the past.

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/04/2022 14:41

I like exotic ice cream flavours.
Rum and raisin is top
Maple and Walnut.
Coffee.
Christmas pudding ice-cream (made by SIL for her husband who is coeliac)
Jaffa cake ice cream (had this once from an ice-cream shop opposite the pier at Weston-super-Mare so not sure if it's still there).
Any flavour made by Marshfield Farm (they are local to us and we've bought direct from the dairy I the past).

ThatsNotItAtAll · 01/04/2022 14:42

Actually the best ice-cream is a really good vanilla made with vanilla pods - as far from "plain" as you can get.

ukborn · 01/04/2022 14:42

I like fruit as fruit. I don't like it in other foods (exception for some yoghurts, banana bread and sticky toffee pudding, and my mum's fruit cake)! So give me coffee/caramel/pecan/swirl/whatever (you can keep chocolate though) over strawberry/mango lemon any day.

S4M3 · 01/04/2022 14:47

@MrOllivander

I love it all Grin strawberry, blackcurrant cheesecake flavour, clotted cream, peanut butter, caramel, brown bread Just give me ice cream Grin
My opinion precisely. All of the ice cream.

Although I did once a scoop of Ben & Jerry Birthday Cake ice cream and it was so sickly sweet I could barely manage to finish it (but I bravely soldiered on) and I can take the sweet.

iklboo · 01/04/2022 14:48

@1TheCircle - ooh thanks. I know what's going in my shopping basket later.

Iamkmackered1979 · 01/04/2022 14:50

I don’t like chocolate or strawberry ice cream both taste artificial to me. I’m a vanilla girl, although Hagaan daz do a lovely salted caramel but I don’t buy it as I’d eat the full tub then want more. Do fancy a nice mr whippy just now though not that watery stuff you get in McDonald’s etc though
Hope you find a nice strawberry op, boyfriend loves it too so is happy to get a nice one

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 01/04/2022 14:53

I’m still mourning the loss of the Gino Ginelli Tutti Fruitti ice cream from the 80s.

Oh! Those glorious chunks of crystallised angelica, cherries & something that may have been pineapple (mangos hadn’t been invented in the 80s, not in our house anyway).

They are just in the middle of a huge move on frozen so the store might get some new lines in soon.
PAFMO · 01/04/2022 14:58

@Laiste

I only have one thing to say in relation to ice cream

CHERRY GARCIA

Oh god yes.

But, surely fruit ice-creams come into their own in summer?
In winter I want chocolate and variations thereof. In summer I have lemon and mango.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 01/04/2022 15:02

Asda & occasionally Lidl sell some marvellous kulfi, I think there was mango & possibly lemon too? Don’t get me wrong, I adore chocolate (and if it were my last day on Earth I’d head straight for the Häagen-Dazs Pralines & Cream) but I prefer a good fruity ice cream.

Sorbet seems to have gone extinct too in the high street supermarkets. Bah humbug.

Honeyroar · 01/04/2022 15:08

@WellTidy

The best ice cream I’ve ever had was in Lisbon - fig and almond. I am forever chasing it.

My favourite shop bought ice cream is haagen daaz strawberry cheesecake.

I’d rather have no ice cream at all than chocolate ice cream and I LOVE chocolate, from Cadburys to charbonnel et walker.

I agree. Chocolate has to be chocolate. I don’t like chocolate ice cream, milkshakes or cake! But I own a coffee shop and our chocolate milkshakes massively outsell the strawberry/banana ones.
SadButTheTruth · 01/04/2022 15:09

I love ALL ice cream, but favour fruit flavours in all my confection - absolutely love a fruit fondant chocolate for example. Best fruit flavours I’ve discovered recently is Haagen Daz Mango & Raspberry. It’s Mango ice cream (creamy alphonso mango flavour) with a lovely raspberry jammy swirl. Very sweet and a little goes a long way but really fruity and creamy at the same time. Just yum!

SaxendaSummer · 01/04/2022 15:18

I'm going to lower the tone now and say the sweet shop I've creams sold in Iceland are my fave!!

Iceland the shop not country!

Black Jack, fruit salad, squashie ...ice creams on sticks

In tubs they have angel delight, ambrosia custard and mr Kipling cake flavours

No quality but they taste nice!
