Keeping warm this evening

If you have got your heating on low or switched off, how are you keeping warm (or are you cold)?

I have thermals on underneath a jumper and tracksuit bottoms. I have a large scarf worn like a shawl, two pairs of socks and a hot water bottle. I am not freezing but not very warm either. I am going to bed earlier than usual too, after a very quick shower.

I'm in bed with a hot water bottle after a hot bath. But that's true of most nights.

It's chilly but not uncomfortably so.

SourMilkGhyll · 31/03/2022 22:36

No heating on here. Watching TV with a duvet. Dogs are curled up like hot water bottles next to me.

LBOCS2 · 31/03/2022 22:38

Our heating went off about an hour ago?

I'm wearing relatively cosy clothes (leggings, vest top, snuggly jumper, socks, slippers) and I'm under a blanket on the sofa. If anything I'm a bit hot. We have blankets on all the sofas, interlined curtains, thermal underlay under the carpet, etc etc. I grew up in a draughty Victorian house which was north facing, single glazed and had inefficient heating. I'm quite good at working out how to keep myself warm!

similar. i sit across a two seater, bit like a small sofa, with blankets under, around, and at back.
have also today put on long-sleeved thermal t-shirt, under polo shirt and zip-up fleece.
i will keep the thermal on in bed, under fleecy pyjamas.
always wear socks; day time, and night times ones i change into with pyjamas.
it can get chiily. was 54F in bedroom when i last checked.
will probably put heating on later for about an hour.
have to check on a neighbour first, who is immobile, so has to keep her heating on all the time. that will warm me up a bit.
i have very low income. and a few dwindling savings, out of which pay bills. no prospect of greater income. but have plenty of clothes, so can wrap up like the michelin man, and roll around.
keep a stout heart.

scrivette · 31/03/2022 22:42

I don't have heating on and have just got into bed with long sleeved fleecy pyjamas and a hot water bottle for my feet.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 31/03/2022 22:49

We are being frugal with heating. I have fluffy loungewear and a teddy blanket from Dunelm (seriously everyone needs a teddy blanket they are gorgeous!!)

I also have a fat cat on my knee who is keeping my legs warm.

BigUpAllOfUshereOnMN · 31/03/2022 22:50

I'm still freezing under duvet. I need to borrow a few cats

LesLavandes · 31/03/2022 22:52

Just socks. I don't feel too cold

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 31/03/2022 22:53

The dogs have been summoned for some keep warm duty.

Clockstooforward · 31/03/2022 22:55

Am in bed with pj bottom and T-shirt plus dog ! Am warm enough under duvet…cannot wear socks in bed !!

CrazyCatMamma · 31/03/2022 22:55

Where on earth do you all live?
I'm in bed with a medium tog quilt and jjst my knickers. I'm toasty.

Traumdeuter · 31/03/2022 22:55

Thick socks and fleecy PJs under the duvet. Heating was on for an hour between 6pm and 7pm but off since then and it’s been chilly for a few hours, but a couple of cups of tea helped keep me core-warm.

SkankingMopoke · 31/03/2022 22:57

The heating was on, albeit set to 15 degrees, for a few hours earlier this afternoon/evening, but has been off for a about 2hrs now. The air temperature is definitely cold in here (my nose is cold!). DCs are cozy and happily snoring in bed. DH and I are in loungewear, Kuddlys, and slipper socks. I am a little overly warm thanks to the Kuddly.

User76745333 · 31/03/2022 22:59

I’ve just put another large log into the wood burner in the hope it keeps going for a few more hours. It’s a cold one here.

Sassy306 · 31/03/2022 23:05

Me and partner are both on the sofa with the heated throw, best thing I ever bought 😊

JuliaSways · 31/03/2022 23:05

Our heating was on earlier at 18, our front room is tropic at that setting although the rest of the house (3 bed, 1 bath detached extended to 5 bed, 3 bath) varies as we have ongoing issues with the radiators.

We have plenty of blankets and the kids are encouraged to add layers (eldest, 18, likes to strut around in tiny pj shorts and crop tops and complain "this house is freezing!!!"

I can't get too worked up about having to reduce heating use. Its not that long ago that central heating wasn't the norm (nor was double glazing and decent insulation) and people survived by using layers, blankets, hot water bottles and electric blankets, I remember it well and I was a child in the 80s. It can be done, we're just overly reliant on central heating these days. Obviously I'm speaking in regards to healthy families as I'm lucky to have. My heart goes out to the ill, disabled, elderly who are struggling.

LightSpeeds · 31/03/2022 23:06

My bedroom has been between 13 and 15 degrees for most of the day. Have had a treat and put the heating on for an hour!

Luckily we all have electric blankets on our beds.

There will be plenty of people (many vulnerable) who will also be struggling to keep warm/well.

I'm sick of hearing the Tories shrugging it off like it's not a very serious problem!

WhackusBonkus · 31/03/2022 23:09

Perimenopause. Job done Grin

EthelTheAardvark · 31/03/2022 23:20

Today I've had five layers on my top half, including a jumper, a jerkin and a poncho, and thermals and trousers on my bottom half, plus thick socks and underwear. I don't like putting on the hearing when it's only me in the house, but I did have a heater on in the room I was working in. Now I'm in bed in a room with a temperature of around 15, so planning to snuggle right under the duvet and an extra blanket and hope that keeps me warm till morning.

Sunnytwobridges · 31/03/2022 23:22

I wish the weather was like that where I am, it's HOT and I hate it LOL

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 31/03/2022 23:22

Ds and I did a brutal HIIT ladder workout earlier in the evening. I was cold before doing it but pleasantly warm for the rest of the evening.

bloodywhitecat · 31/03/2022 23:24

It's 1° outside with snow flurries. The house thermostat is reading 12° and the wind is rattling through the old, single glazed windows so much so that the curtains are blowing about, I am bloody cold despite a 13 tog duvet and PJs.
NewYearCalavicci · 31/03/2022 23:24

For all of them that just have your heating on for a hour or do you think it's worth trying to heat a whole house in just an hour ?
That's wouldn't work in my house heating need to be on for 3 or 4 hours before it starts to get warm if it's freezing cold outside.

I keep mine set at around 15 most of the time and turn it up a bit in the evening .

alexdgr8 · 31/03/2022 23:25

just checked, bedroom temp is now 51F.
will put on heating for an hour later.
i can remember trying to write essays in the middle of the night when it was around 40F, at college, i had things wrapped around my legs and wrists. could hardly work the pen across the page, almost numb.
would not recommend it.
then i moved out and parent got central heating installed. !

Iggly · 31/03/2022 23:25

Hot water bottle and many layers on the bed. I find a fleece blanket between me and the two duvets works wonders.
