Keeping warm this evening

If you have got your heating on low or switched off, how are you keeping warm (or are you cold)?

I have thermals on underneath a jumper and tracksuit bottoms. I have a large scarf worn like a shawl, two pairs of socks and a hot water bottle. I am not freezing but not very warm either. I am going to bed earlier than usual too, after a very quick shower.

Oh I should of added that I have a single quilt on my sofa and a hot water bottle

I must've got used to having the house cool because we have not had our heating on above 18 all winter (the dial usually hovers around 14 - 15 though the radiators aren't clicking on until we turn it up to 16-17) and we rarely feel cold now.

We wear thermals underneath PJs and thick socks and slippers as well as having plenty of hot drinks. If it does start to feel a bit nippy we have big fleecy blankets on the arm of the settee that we can just pull over ourselves.

The kitchen/dining room is the warmest area so we often sit in there during the day with the internal doors closed.

On our bed we have a 2.5tog duvet and a thin quilt and it's plenty warm enough.

Glad I'm not the only one who is cold. Old draughty house and temperature is 15 in our living room. Turned the heating off a couple of weeks ago because of costs. It's almost April, why do I feel this cold? Meanwhile at my mil's house she didn't have the heating on in January and it was 15 in her living room.

Apparently it is -2 here. We lit the log burners around 6pm and stopped stoking them with wood around 8.30. I have a thick dressing gown on and am still toasty and the laundry on the clothes maiden is drying nicely. Have opened the doors upstairs to let the heat circulate and havent had the oil heating on much this year at all. We have however spent hours and hours processing wood which we have collected or been given or bought because it is cheaper than oil and our electric bill is still higher than most because we have no gas. I really feel for those who are struggling to keep warm and who will struggle again, probably even more next winter.

Beachbreak2411 · 31/03/2022 23:42

I just walked home from work. Got changed for bed and have windows open. It’s really not that cold! Ordered a new summer weight duvet hopefully arriving tomorrow.

RewildingAmbridge · 31/03/2022 23:44

Log burner, our local Tesco were selling off bags of coffee logs for £2.50 a bag!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 31/03/2022 23:49

Dh put the heating in today but we all have covid apart from him so he felt it necessary. I actually love that he thought to do that but he might have been fed up making hot drinks.

Neverreturntoathread · 31/03/2022 23:53

Fleece top, fleece sofa blanket with cat on top.

MrOllivander · 31/03/2022 23:56

@BigUpAllOfUshereOnMN

I'm still freezing under duvet. I need to borrow a few cats
You can have this one. He isn't mine, but it must be cold as he's decided he's sleeping here tonight Took himself off to his pillow in my spare room and slapped his tail over his eyes Grin

Big cosy fleece from Dunelm. (Got it in November.) I love it! Keeps me so snug. Grin It's 4 ft wide and 5 ft long!

Kerberos · 31/03/2022 23:59

@WhackusBonkus

Perimenopause. Job done Grin
Was just thinking same. Small vest top, heating off and I'll still kick the duvet off several times in the night.

I am in London and it’s been really cold here today. About 2 degrees at the moment and meant to go down to zero.

I have one of these. I have it on my back to warm me up and then put it over my feet if they get chilled. Costs a hell of a lot less to use than heating and has a timer so no risk of leaving it running. Its also good when, like today, I wrenched my back! I wear thermals and socks all the time and usually have at least 2 jumpers on. I put the heating on the for the kids but I simply cant afford to have it on in the whole house so I turn it off as soon as they leave for school and go to bed.

And I am dreading the next few weeks :(

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/04/2022 00:08

That is, I turn it off when THEY go to bed, although I have been known to go back to bed when they are at school as its warmer than staying downstairs.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/04/2022 00:11

Oh yeah duvets.....2 on each bed and another on the sofa that we all sit under.

It fucking sucks being poor. It is getting to the stage of heat or eat in our house at the moment, I need it to warm up so I can save up over summer so that next winter will not be such a hit.

NoShitHemlock · 01/04/2022 00:44

I invested in an Oodie - expensive (although I bought it with a discount) but it's actually saving me a fortune on heating.

I am too fat to always be this cold sigh

ozymandiusking · 01/04/2022 00:46

The teddy bear blanketsfrom Dunelm are fabulous. I use one in the lounge, and warm up in seconds.

I have a very old terraced cottage,, a bit of central heating, no double glazing, and draughty in parts..had the heating on for a while earlier, but have an electric blanket, and also my three cats on the bed, two of them near my feet area, and one near my pillow, so quite cosy at the moment.

Its been snowing a bit in Hertfordshire today, with a very cold wind blowing.
