What would nuclear war look like?

Trigger warning Not for anyone feeling anxious about impending doom.

Purely for hypothetical speculation.

Who would hit first and where? What are the major European targets? Could Russia reach the US with nuclear weapons?

Would a nuclear bomb in London be felt in Scotland? Would China get involved? I'm curious how it would all play out.

We've had decades to disarm. If it was going to happen, it would by now

You literally think it will never be achieved?

Thoosa · 24/02/2022 15:57

@SprayedWithDettol

Whilst a nuclear war would be short, I am hopeful that Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD for short) is why they won’t be used.

There are some interesting perspectives on this theory online that are worth reading.

Yes me too.
OppsUpsSide · 24/02/2022 15:57

There is only one answer to that. To instil more terror, more fear.

Stand down, it’s not up to you what other people discuss. There are other threads/discussions you can join.

Some people got close enough to attempt to kill Hitler several times.

not really a great example since they failed. And also they weren't in his inner circle (which is why they failed).

And Putin has already shown the world (but most importantly the people he is surrounded with) exactly what fate will befall their families wherever they are in the world if they even dream about crossing him.

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/02/2022 15:58

Made me think of this

Well Eisenhower warned us back in the 1950s - before I was born.

And having marched for CND in the 1980s - forty years ago (or over a decade before DS was born) I think I'm allowed some skin in the game. So to speak.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 16:00

I am just wondering what op is getting out of this thread?

I think we ALL know what a nuclear attack would look like, most of us have actually been to school after all.

The wall of fake news/war mongering and Russian disinformation is in full swing across the world. Talking about how it feels to be nuked on a day that Ukraine has been invaded is in extremely poor poor taste, especially given people are dying right now at Chernobyl.

Thoosa · 24/02/2022 16:01

Oh I know the history @DGRossetti

I was just asking whether you really consider it forever hopeless?

x2boys · 24/02/2022 16:02

@AuntieMarys

Read When the Wind Blows
Or watch the film Threads,scared the shit out of me for years .

@ThatPosterIsSoRight

Had to laugh at your Covid comment. It is like some weird sick comedy, isn’t it ‘24/02, end of all restrictions for Covid. Also 24/02, start of WW3. Nice of Putin to not overlap them, I mean, that would be horrific?!

Well I also didn't think the Berlin Wall would fall, so won't claim to be a mystic.

But as long as the world is run by men people who need substitutes for their virility, I think we won't see any significant move to disarm.

You were the one cheering like a football fan on the other thread at the thought Russian soldiers getting blown out of the sky.Confused

Information, perspective, a greater understanding of what's going on. If it's not for you, feel free to hide the thread.

You are aware though that people are dying at Chernobyl right now oh? Just to be clear that is happening on the ground as we speak.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 16:10

I am not sad that Ukraine are standing up themselves laurie Not sad at all, it is either the soldiers or the babies on the ground in Ukraine as far as I can tell. Innocent families that have harmed no one.

Agreed.
CharlotteRose90 · 24/02/2022 16:14

I hope if it happens that’s it quick and I don’t feel anything. Right now though im worried about my family that live in a country bordering Ukraine. He won’t stop at Ukraine and we all know it.

I think that was really responsible and thoughtful of him actually, can't have troops marching around spreading covid. He was right to wait until the pandemic was over.

Florelei · 24/02/2022 16:17

If things get that bad I’d rather be in the epicentre.

I think it’ll be fine though. None of these people want to kill everyone

Ohmnomnom · 24/02/2022 16:18

@Keepyourheadscrewedon and am I laughing and cheering that fact? Not all of us feel better by burying our heads in the sand. Some of us want to discuss different scenarios even if there is no realistic chance of them happening. I apologise if I've offended you, but I suspect you just enjoy being the self-appointed thread police.

Could Russia reach the US with nuclear weapons?

You do realise that Russia and the US are right next to each other? At certain times of the year, if conditions were right for freezing, you could walk across from Russia to the US

racquel86 · 24/02/2022 16:22

[quote DillonPanthersTexas]This somewhat morbid website allows you to simulate the effects of a nuclear strike on any point on earth, depending on device detonated, ground strike or airburst, weather conditions etc it can plot the fireball, blast radius, fallout area as well as predicted deaths and causalities.

As horrific as that website sounds ..... I obviously clicked on the link 🤣 must be popular today as it wouldn't load .....

Yes, but they wouldn't be stood at the edge of Russia lobbing missiles into Alaska. Any weapons would still need to travel a fair distance.
