Failed to stop for police - why am I such an idiot?!

Having an absolute melt down over here - hope someone can talk me down and/or make me feel better by telling me silly things you have done when driving ..... Basically, I was on a narrow road, one lane each way, fairly chunky verge. Blue lights behind, panicked and drove few 100 metres to next roundabout to get out of way. Totally, totally know now I should have just stopped on side but I panicked. So embarrassed. Police pointed to wind my window down when they got alongside me. They were understandably irrate. I have a lot of respect for our police force and am mortified that I have made their job even more difficult than it already is. Literally cannot stop sobbing!

@ilovelamp2 please feel free to let me know if I have offended you. Seems other posters have taken it upon themselves to be offended for you. Clearly it is a problem if someone is driving but can't hear a siren until it is right behind the driver. Other people have said what I have but just decide to try and pick on me.

I am confident I haven't been offensive.

SunshineCake1 · 21/02/2022 18:40

If the police only put the siren on the minute they are behind a driver that is different but it doesn't read like that is what happened here.

Tequilabeliever · 21/02/2022 18:41

@superdupertruper

The problem is this. They are assigned to a call that necessitates a blue light. All they then see is a vehicle that is now failing to stop or move. This then becomes the call they have to deal with. Are they drink driving? Is it stolen? Are they trying to discard drugs? Is there a firearm in the vehicle. Also the call they are blue lighting to could be the one that kils them whilst trying to save you or someone else's life so not necessarily bellends at all.
I agree, absolutely not bellends at all. Some of the replies on here are ridiculous.

If people can’t pay attention properly they shouldn’t be driving.

What bollocks. Hope you’re feeling better now @ilovelamp2.

Leafypage · 21/02/2022 18:49

I did the same because I didn’t think it was me they wanted. I had a head lamp blown. I said sorry and moved on from it quite quickly. It’s sometimes difficult to react straight away, you’re only human.

CovidCorvid · 21/02/2022 18:52

They sound like idiots.

I got yelled at last year for not getting out the way when it was my road due to the parked cars on the other side of the road. Some “knobhead “ tried to push through resulting in me scraping my car alloys against the kerb. I was mouthing at him and he wound the window down screaming at me he was a retained firefighter going to the fire station . How the fuck was I supposed to know!

CottonSock · 21/02/2022 18:52

They sound like arseholes and you should possibly report it and that you wear hearing aids.

FAQs · 21/02/2022 18:52

@ilovelamp2 I don’t understand, if it was a two way street were the oncoming cars stopping to create a gap and you carried on so kept closing the gap so they couldn’t overtake, if so that is seriously dreadful driving on your side? I can’t see what I’d the ongoing lane was empty why they didn’t overtake?

Sounds like he abused his position!

*why if the oncoming lane

FindingMeno · 21/02/2022 18:54

@Sunshinecake1.
I am hearing impaired. Is it OK with you if I'm offended?

Lunificent · 21/02/2022 18:54

Not long after I passed my test, a policeman tried to get me to pull over and stop on the motorway. I knew I needed to stop immediately so I pulled over into an area to the right of the outside lane! In my haste, it didn’t occur to me that stopping next to the fast lane is a bit crazy.
I think I was having a slow processing moment. I thought if I’d I crossed to the outside lane and pulled up on the hard shoulder, it would take too long to do and therefore the policeman would think I was attempting to drive off, which is why I parked up so dangerously.
Anyway, he ranted at me for stopping where I did and I shouted back at him that there was no need to be so aggressive. I am stunned that he then let me go as I think I really tried his patience.

CovidCorvid · 21/02/2022 18:55

Yeah, I think some people do (maybe unintentionally) abuse their position. Maybe they get used to telling people what to do and it goes to their heads!?

SunshineCake1 · 21/02/2022 18:59

I don't dictate what you feel.

Please explain. It doesn't feel safe to me for someone to be driving who can't hear what is going on around them. I'm not saying hard if hearing people shouldn't drive. I'm saying they need to be safe. It is in the highway code that all drivers have to be aware of all other road users.

FAQs · 21/02/2022 19:03
@FindingMeno exactly this. This is why I have very little respect for police, supposedly on their way to an emergency but still enough time to lecture a lone woman with her 11 year old child in the car.
What! Have we just gone back to the 50s and little woman there, there pats head.

San141 · 21/02/2022 19:03

Many years ago, I stopped for the police no blue lights but flashing headlights. I signalled and pulled in. They where annoyed as they weren't flashing, it was the camber/ bumps in the road!! It was 11:30p.m !

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/02/2022 19:19

I don't hope that when you did finally pull over you gave the 'International Wanker'* sign.

*still to be ratified by the United Nations

FireMeetGasoline · 21/02/2022 19:19

@San141 this is really embarrassing and I probably deserve to be mocked for this, but I'd been driving for about 5 years when I realised that people in cars behind weren't flashing me at night, but actually going over bumps/uneven surfaces 😳. I always used to check my lights when I got home. How embarrassing!

HellonHeels · 21/02/2022 19:22

SunshineCake1 the DVLA doeant agree with you about deaf people, Im afraid:

MrsWarleggan · 21/02/2022 19:24

@FireMeetGasoline

I still do that....and often to do Olivia Coleman "whatt?" face when I see someone in my mirror "flashing" 🤣🤣

FireMeetGasoline · 21/02/2022 19:30

@MrsWarleggan glad I'm not the only one 🤣

SunshineCake1 · 21/02/2022 19:31

I never said deaf people shouldn't or can't drive @HellonHeels.

Blossomtoes · 21/02/2022 19:33

You most certainly did. You said:

You might need to give it a rest now. Your comments were clear and you have annoyed people and gone off the topic. It’s not your thread so please stop justifying yourself
SunshineCake1 · 21/02/2022 19:37

I take your point Blossomtoes and it does read like that. I certainly didn't mean it. I assumed there would be an option for a stringer hearing aid.

@curlymom you don't get to tell me what to do.
