Radio 2 - what in the hell have you done to Paul O'Grady?

A580Hojas · 20/02/2022 19:40

Honestly, R2 execs, if you ever read the Mumsnet threads, Paul O'Grady comes up time and time again as an absolute favourite! He's only on for two hours once a week, why couldn't you let him be?

I've nothing against Rob Beckett but ... FFS ... isn't he on television enough? Why does he need to have a curated position on the radio?

I am SO UNHAPPY.

Agree.

Realitea · 20/02/2022 19:44

Have they got rid of Paul? Noooo!!

ShirleyBadass · 20/02/2022 19:44

Doesn't sound like it was his decision....

Just listened to Rob B show. Was fine, but I did miss Paul O'Grady. Why could they not get rid of Elaine Paige or Michael Ball?Confused

Lovemydaxie · 20/02/2022 19:56

Really! I thought Paul O'Grady was just on holiday this week. What a shame, I really liked his show, so sad 😢. I agree with getting rid of Elaine Page and Michael Ball. Would not have missed either of them.

Davros · 20/02/2022 20:05

Same with Radio London and Robert Elms

RainbowConnection1 · 20/02/2022 20:08

Paul will be doing 12 weeks on and 12 weeks off. He Tweeted this week that it wasn't his decision but he'd be back on air in May.

A580Hojas · 20/02/2022 20:08

No?? what have they done to Robert Elms?

It's pathetic, I don't know where they do their research, really. So many tv execs are living on a other planet. It's like Philip Schofield being on absolutely everything. What's his appeal?! Barely watch ITV anymore because of him.

Love Paul O'Grady

Quirrelsotherface · 20/02/2022 22:09

Tv and radio I should say, obvs

Smokeahontas · 20/02/2022 22:09

Such a shame. I wish they’d put Liza Tarbuck on more too, I adore her.

Robert is only on BBC London on Fridays-Sundays now, instead of Monday-Saturday.
Clickncollect · 20/02/2022 22:28

I agree, nothing against Rob Beckett but Paul O’Grady has been an important part of my Sunday for years and I bloody miss him when he’s not on. Why why why why do the management never listen to us? It’s like the Simon Mayo debacle all over again - for the record, I think Jo Whiley is superb but the management were out of order putting her in the drivetime slot.

anotherheadache · 20/02/2022 22:31

I don't understand their thought process, Rob and Paul cater for completely different audiences. It's a strange choice for a weekend radio 2 host.

Chamomile · 20/02/2022 22:39

I just sent my first ever complaint to the BBC!
Paul O’Grady was part of my Sunday dinner cooking routine and I was really put out at hearing someone new and realising it wasn’t just a one off , last minute sub. I’ve never heard of Rob Beckett, and I found his voice really annoying, although I thought his playlist was good - the little I heard anyway before I switched off in a strop.

A580Hojas · 21/02/2022 09:11

Watching TV last night, we saw a show with Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan which was quite funny.

But Romesh also has a radio 2 show (about Hip Hop music I think) and it's like RB has spat the dummy and said "well if he's got a radio show, I want one too!" and the producers at R2 haven't got the imagination but to look to TV for radio presenters.

He was wooden, the little bit I heard and every single message he read out was along the lines of "great you've got your own show Rob", "brilliant to hear you on the radio" which also should be BANNED afaic - since when is it OK for radio presenters, newbies at that, to just blatantly self-promote with no shame!

I am really surprised at how riled I am.

So, farewell Paul Sad. Am going to miss your show so much. Him and Liza and Claudia are the only people I make a point of tuning in to.

I am finding it hard to stay loyal to Radio 2 just now as there are so many presenters who I just can't stand - Gary Davis and Scott Mills being top of the tree.

Boo!

Shrewsbury247 · 14/08/2022 19:32

So sad to see Paul go, he is show us like a big comfort blanket on a Sunday evening.
Rob Beckett won’t get a look in in this house, sorry, but just no! He’s bloody rubbish 😡

loseridiot · 14/08/2022 19:34

It's such a shame. I loved Paul's show and have listened mainly in the car for years. Paul left because he didn't want to do 13 weeks on then 13 off. Don't blame him. A great presenter. Warm, funny and earthy. He was only on two hours a week as it was. I complained to the BBC and no offence to Paul's replacement but I will not be listening due to loyalty to Paul.

I love Liza too, Ken Bruce, Scott Mills, DJ Spooney and Gary Davies. Proper old school, warm, professional and fun. I miss Jimmy Young who was replaced by a younger person.

It seems R2 want to appeal to an increasingly younger crowd while ignoring their loyal listeners.

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/08/2022 19:37

My money's on Paul going to Virgin.

hotfroth · 14/08/2022 19:48

Radio 2 has gone to Hell in a handcart. I'm not interested in the latest pop, or the sort of stuff churned out by the bucketload on the lesser Glastonbury stages. Nor am I interested in the cheesy chit-chat of people under 40 trying to be cool.

What are we all supposed to listen to now?

purpleme12 · 14/08/2022 19:52

Why was he doing 13 weeks on then 13 weeks off?

dropthevipers · 14/08/2022 20:01

Elaine page sounds like a pissed up beryl Reid.

A580Hojas · 14/08/2022 20:03

purpleme12 · 14/08/2022 19:52

Why was he doing 13 weeks on then 13 weeks off?

Not his choice, apparently. The powers that be at R2 decided that Rob Beckett (he who is utterly ubiquitous on the TV) deserved a radio show of his own for some unfathomnable reason.

Tiredalwaystired · 14/08/2022 20:29

Paul ogrady, Liza tarbuck, Steve Wright and Scott mills can all get in the sea.

Ken Bruce needs a longer slot.
