Radio 2 - what in the hell have you done to Paul O'Grady?

Honestly, R2 execs, if you ever read the Mumsnet threads, Paul O'Grady comes up time and time again as an absolute favourite! He's only on for two hours once a week, why couldn't you let him be?

I've nothing against Rob Beckett but ... FFS ... isn't he on television enough? Why does he need to have a curated position on the radio?

I am SO UNHAPPY.

Radio 2 has gone to Hell in a handcart. I'm not interested in the latest pop, or the sort of stuff churned out by the bucketload on the lesser Glastonbury stages. Nor am I interested in the cheesy chit-chat of people under 40 trying to be cool.

What are we all supposed to listen to now?

Exactly. That is what R1 is for.

Yes, R2 decided to make changes to Paul's programme by offering half to RB. The way they have done this makes no sense. I hope Paul is offered a show by another station as well and earns more.

Started listening to R6 lately. It's not R2 but some programmes are okay and the music is more eclectic.

Really going to miss him, listened to him for over ten years and really loved his show, it will always be Sunday early evening family time in the kitchen to me.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/08/2022 20:36

I absolutely hate his show so I'll be fairly happy he's gone. Elaine Page would have been top of my wish list though.

Watching TV last night, we saw a show with Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan which was quite funny.

But Romesh also has a radio 2 show (about Hip Hop music I think) and it's like RB has spat the dummy and said "well if he's got a radio show, I want one too!" and the producers at R2 haven't got the imagination but to look to TV for radio presenters.

He was wooden, the little bit I heard and every single message he read out was along the lines of "great you've got your own show Rob", "brilliant to hear you on the radio" which also should be BANNED afaic - since when is it OK for radio presenters, newbies at that, to just blatantly self-promote with no shame!

I am really surprised at how riled I am.

“Since when is ok for radio presenters to blatantly self promote with no shame!”

Didn't you ever hear Steve Wright’s show?!

lollipoprainbow · 14/08/2022 20:44

Enjoyed his gentle show on a Sunday evening. Cannot stand rob Beckett and his bloody teeth.

Ammonites · 14/08/2022 20:48

Ah no I love listening to Paul O G and Malcolm ☹️

NerrSnerr · 14/08/2022 20:50

It seems R2 want to appeal to an increasingly younger crowd while ignoring their loyal listeners

I just looked it up and Ken Bruce was 36 when he started at Radio 2 which is the same age as Rob Beckett and younger Zoe, Sara and Scott. Wonder if the listeners back in the 80s were complaining back then?

iliketartan · 14/08/2022 20:55

Love POG and DH and I will really miss his show. Will be retuning to another show next Sunday. Hope Liza Tarbuck and Ken Bruce have stab vests because I've a feeling they're going to need them Sad

This Helen Thomas who has taken over the helm of R2 seems to be following in the footsteps of her predecessor, with the usual ‘If it ain’t broke, fix it until it is’. I used to listen throughout the day with a newborn, and having not long lost someone very close, the familiar voices felt comforting. It felt like there was something for everyone, with the best in their fields, now it’s just a homogenous mass of blandness.

Elderflower14 · 14/08/2022 21:37

Very sad about POG.... Helen Thomas had better leave Johnnie Walker and Ken Bruce alone!!! 😡 😡 😡 😡

Jazzapples1 · 14/08/2022 22:07

I’m so disappointed to hear this. Nasty BBC, treating people badly. Such an ageist organisation, amongst other things.

…and lay off the very lovely Huw Edwards and all the other lovely and wonderful TV and radio presenters or I’ll have to switch over.

I agree with whoever said we see enough of Rob Beckett already and the Essex accent is in plentiful supply across the airwaves already unlike the lovely Liverpudlian lilt.

Paul O’Grady is a rare gem and should be treasured. So reassuring to have people like him on the radio in these difficult times.

Where is he going? Can I follow him over to another radio station???

FenlandFuckwit · 14/08/2022 22:09

I suppose it’s not Rob Beckett’s fault. He appears to be the type that accepts any TV/radio work on offer but radio2 has made mistake sidelining Paul.

ozymandiusking · 14/08/2022 22:26

The BBC are utterly arrogant. They have no regard whatsoever for their viewers or listeners.
Look how they treated Cliff Richard. They didn't play his records for years.
They are a load of left wing biased idiots. And as for us having to pay a license fee they can whistle.
Instead of making BBC3 into a channel for teenagers, why not make it into,
BBC3 the Sports channel, instead of BBC1 as a sports channel, which is what essentially it is now.
It's also time we had a BBC +1 Not that I watch it.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 14/08/2022 22:36

Bloody radio 2, I hardly ever listen anymore. I agree get shot of Elaine annoying Paige and stick Beckett in her slot I am however delighted Steve wright is going

Idk tbh. I was a child then when R1 were at its height with roadshows. I don't remember R2 being as popular as it now around my parts.

I'm sorry you're grieving Flowers.

There's lots of change. I miss Simon Mayo. Yes, the presenters were more varied personality wise and played a good mix of music the audience could relate to instead of trying to be cool. Now it's the TV has taken over the radio and it's very samey.

MoreHairyThanScary · 14/08/2022 22:58

I listen to R2 lot, I'm overjoyed that Steve Wright is going and there will be less POG and I can only hope they do the same for Liza Tarbuck.

I like Micheal Ball, and some of EP's show ( the music just not EP and the stupid put on laugh, that someone once upon a time told her was hilarious!). R2 does need a shake up there will things that work and things that don't...
