Flash Mobs

Zoom101 · 19/02/2022 17:40

I just fell down a YouTube rabbit hole of flash mobs as I love them but they always make me a bit tearful in a good way, no idea why!

They fascinate me as the preparation must take ages and how do people rehearse if they are held in a massive public place?

Have you ever witnessed one or taken part in one? I’d love to hear your stories about them. The ones that do the rounds on social media are usually brilliant but are they ever a little bit shit or just don’t take off?

Ahhh you're me Grin

You might love Where the Hell is Matt. It started as a joke for friends because of his unique dancing style, but then took off. Watch this one first...

Then this one. Happy crying!

Thank you @JesusInTheCabbageVan! These have made me 🥲 as you promised 😂.

I’d love to take part in one but would probably stuff it up!

I love them too, and yes, a good one can make me tear up. I think it’s the whole “people coming together to do something uplifting” vibe. Even though it’s staged. My favourite ones are One More Day from Les Mis in a shopping mall, and a German orchestra doing the Ode to Joy. Brilliant.

BreakingUpWithMyPhone · 19/02/2022 18:30

These are brilliant 💛.

Zoom101 · 19/02/2022 18:32

@Boood I will have a look at those too, it will be a happy teary evening here.

I’ve watched the scene from Modern Family when Mitch surprises Cam more times than I care to admit to 😂

I like them, when they’re by music or dance groups for publicity etc.

The slick ones in TV shows are fun performances but just part of the show, in RL few people would be willing or able to give the many hours / days of rehearsals.

On the fence about paid-for ones for proposals, with hired performers, but perhaps that’s because I am not keen on public proposals in general.

I was in a shopping centre years ago and one started. It was so amazing to watch.

Another time I was in St Pancras train station late one night and someone started playing Piano Man on the piano in the station. Totally unprompted people started singing along until there was a mob of us singing. Then it finished and we all walked away hurriedly! It was one of the best experiences ever. Can't put my finger on why, still makes me happy to think of it

ImFree2doasiwant · 20/02/2022 10:45

Commenting so I can come back and watch these. 😊
Oh I loved this til I saw him - something about him gave me the creeps, I’d love to know if they are together still. But the routine was adorable!

DD was in a small one in a shopping centre a few years ago, organised through her dance school to tie in with a dementia awareness event. She loved it, and they raised loads of cash too.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/02/2022 10:51

We did them weekly in a place I used to work (family entertainment type place).
Was really difficult to be as enthusiastic after several weeks of it.

BestKnitterInScotland · 20/02/2022 10:51

Oh and the rehearsal thing - the leaders had scoped out the centre space and obviously the centre management were in on it too so the music could be played at the right time.

The girls rehearsed in the space they usually have dance lessons in and on the day they just milled around in 2s and 3s until it was time to start - nothing unusual about teenage girls shopping on a saturday lunchtime. Then two of the older ones started it off, and the others joined in as they had practiced.

Love a good flash mob!

Papergirl1968 · 20/02/2022 11:29

I like Irish dancing ones. They come up on Facebook. There was a great one in the Guiness visitor centre posted the other day.

SamphiretheStickerist · 20/02/2022 11:33

There are a few brilliant clog dancing ones. I'm on my phone or I'd look for them. The best is women, clogs and metal dust bins... I might be back with it later. 🙂
Oh I came on to say after seeing Bruno Mars live I got caught in a hole rabbit hole of 'I Think I Want to Marry You' flash mob videos. If anyone were ever to propose I'd love it done like that and I'm normally against public proposals.

Definitely would love to take part in one. A friend suggested doing one for a friend's 40th but it never happened. Too much organising required and none of us are actually performers.

ghostmouse · 20/02/2022 11:51

I was in a small one once for a wedding at our local church. I belonged to a dance group about ten years ago and the grooms sister approached us and asked if we would do one outside the church. It was amazing but The bride looked totally bemused tbf. The church is in the middle of town and is quite beautiful so there were lots of guests and onlookers.

I love flash mobs, they give me goosebumps

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 20/02/2022 12:12

I love that particular proposal one because it's (almost) all just their friends and family. Not especially polished or skillful, but everyone just beaming and having fun with it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/02/2022 17:36

Love them!

Addictive on YouTube.
Favourites are opera in a supermarket, Welsh rugby fans singing Bread of Heaven, and a great one on an American beach of an amateur musical theatre group doing ‘With cat-like tread…’ ’ from The Pirates of Penzance. Lead singer is phenomenal!
