Type in your accent

Inspired by another thread, just for fun/curiosity.

For example if I were to type the phrase "I'm asking mumsnetters how they sound when they speak" like I say it, it would be

"Eye-hm arsking muhms-net-ters how thay sownd when thay spee-k"

Bonus points for geographical guess though I did say in the other thread!

@whywouldntyou

Bristolian?

tabulahrasa · 18/02/2022 08:35

Um... I’ve got a pretty strong accent, but that sentence comes out exactly like you’d expect from reading it tbh.

SoItWas · 18/02/2022 16:24

Nobody guessed mine, which is a broad Belfast accent. I think a lot of you would struggle to understand me irl, if I didn't do the posh version of my accent.

derxa · 18/02/2022 16:47
Confused
meow1989 · 18/02/2022 16:50

@MrsDThomas same place as me although I can't speak much of the native language Grin

SoItWas · 18/02/2022 22:44

"I'm asking mumsnetters how they sound when they speak"

Would be

Eye-m ass-kin muhms-netters how (I have no clue, how to describe/convey the difference in the [əʉ] dipthong in ow words in a working class Belfast accent, other than making the sound) a (as in the name of the letter) sound (again the difference in the ou sound is hard to describe), wen a (again as in abc) speek (rhymes with peek).

FrangipaniBlue · 18/02/2022 22:56

ABitOfAShitShow · 18/02/2022 22:59

@MeridasMum

A'm askin' Mumsne-urs tae rite how thay speek

That's actually not how I speak but it is the best I can do for an accent that's often quite strong.

I wonder if anyone recognises it?

Glasgow?
Sunnyday321 · 18/02/2022 23:01

@ofwarren Cumbrian ?

ABitOfAShitShow · 18/02/2022 23:05

@Wilburisagirl

Yeah nah, I dunno if eye-ll be able te do that.
I thought you were Geordie but then it’d be ‘ah dunno’ -!; ‘ah’ll’…Is it Durham or Sunderland?
ABitOfAShitShow · 18/02/2022 23:05

-!; should be AND 😂

ABitOfAShitShow · 18/02/2022 23:10

Eye-m askin mumsnettuhz tuh riyte how they speek.

To be fair, mine is diluted now. It should be:

Am askin mumsnettahz… and some of the sounds in the following words would sound a bit different (but I can express the difference in writing).

SoItWas · 18/02/2022 23:14

I have family that would say "Eye-m ass-kin muhms-netters hie a (as in the name of the letter) soun, wen a (again as in abc) speek (rhymes with peek)."

I'm not so broad as to use hi/hie for how, or to drop my d's, but can and do occasionally when bantering.

I find it really hard to place English regional accents. I can hear the accent in my head, but couldn't tell you which is which. I have no idea what someone from say, the Midlands, should sound like.

RightOnTheEdge · 18/02/2022 23:20

Am askin Mumsnettuz ow thi sound when thi talk.

kindlyensure · 18/02/2022 23:32
