Grabbing breakfast...

bumbelinabumsquash · 17/02/2022 15:42

...is the worst thing I've ever heard anyone say. I hate it. I hate people who say it. And I hate people who do it. Grabbing. Yuk.

Mamette, I’ve never understood “a” coffee.
Let’s grab a coffee. Why is it not “a” tea? Makes no sense...

My DH is always “just gonna fly to the shop” Wouldn’t mind, but he takes ages, every time...

Never heard of a kitchen supper.
Hate “picky bits”. Sounds like old scabs.

Ylfa · 17/02/2022 22:29

I like it when people say ‘I’m just going to jump in the bath’ like it’s a hot soapy puddle. My ceilings are too low for that.

DropYourSword · 17/02/2022 22:30

I grab something to eat.
I jump in the shower.
I would ask 'can I get'.
I pick something up from the shops.

I find it baffling that people have such strong feelings about this!!

Ylfa · 17/02/2022 22:31

Also ‘turning’ lights on. It sounds romantic like gaslights 😀

Bluebellbike · 17/02/2022 22:34

It's "needs gone" or "wants done" and other similar contortions of grammar that really annoy me.

Oh God, I do know people who say ‘a tea’ rather than a cup of tea, and even worse ‘do you want a hot drink?’ It makes me want to murder them.

I don’t mind jump in the shower, jump on the phone is a corporate shocker though.

ELM8 · 17/02/2022 22:46

I assume this phrase is what inspired weetabix to make a drink version of their cereal Confused

HelloBunny · 17/02/2022 22:54

Can you really drink Weetabix? Mad.

I remember when those breakfast biscuits first came out, Belvita?
I got them for an early start journey, and was shocked to find that they were just basically Hob Nobs in an oval shape. Actual biscuits for breakfast...

CailleachGranda · 17/02/2022 22:56

I have to hide so many food threads

Chuck
Throw
Bung
And yum.

I do t grab anything. I take it

RobertaFirmino · 17/02/2022 23:08

@liveforsummer

I've never heard the term 'kitchen supper' in my 43 years. What does it mean? Surely all suppers are made in the kitchen?
Where's Crumbs when you need her?

I hate 'grab' too - it always reminds me of Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and their 'grabbing' practices! People who 'rock up' or 'pitch up' (unless camping) can fuck off too.

Also, those who 'prep' lunch. You're making a ham butty love...

NannyGythaOgg · 17/02/2022 23:08

I don't use most of these but really couldn't care less how others express themselves.

I have found it amusing though that some of the critical people have used phrases similarly hated by others.

'Makes my teeth itch' - far more incorrect than any of the hated words/phrases
'grits teeth' err - what does that mean (I know what the writer means but the words???)
'My people'

And I'm sure I also say things that irritate others - 🤷‍♀️

Ibizafun · 17/02/2022 23:09

Or 'grabbing' a shower. Uggh

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 23:13

I have to turn my lights on, they are all on dimmer switches 😆
yupyupyup · 17/02/2022 23:14

Gosh yes 'grab a snack' - ewww

I also hate:
Meal - a child needs a hot meal every day
Piece - a piece of toast
Slice - a slice of pizza

I never say these words as they make me feel ill

Wilburisagirl · 17/02/2022 23:14

None of you better come to Australia then haha. We talk like that even if we mean going out to a cafe for breakfast 😂

HelloBunny · 17/02/2022 23:18

Wilburisagirl, now I’m picturing everyone throwing shrimps onto the barbie... 😂 Sorry!

Classica · 17/02/2022 23:24

I just can't imagine getting annoyed at someone saying 'I'll pick up some pizzas on my way home'. Confused

Some people on MN are constantly in a state over some innocuous phrase or other. Really strange.

Silversprinkles · 17/02/2022 23:25

My current hate is people saying "I'm jumping on a zoom call / thought I would just jump on here to say ..."
you're sitting in a chair in your pyjamas, there's no chance of gymnastics, so please don't say jump!

Not many of the others mentioned bother me too much. "Can I get .." is ubiquitous round my way so I think I'm inured to it now.

Classica · 17/02/2022 23:29

I mean the absolute dramatics of claiming the word 'slice' makes you feel ill. Such attention seeking silliness.

There are other things that annoy me more. It's just that you are not picking anything up. You are buying something.
Classica · 17/02/2022 23:36

'I'll pick up the kids after swimming' probably makes you screech 'no you won't, you will c-o-l-l-e-c-t them'.

Can’t tell if this is a joke or if there’s actually some other word for a slice of pizza I’m unaware of… what the hell else would you call it??
Iamthewombat · 17/02/2022 23:46

@dementedma

My people! Can't abide the constant grabbing of things.
I notice it most when the self-proclaimed grabbers are trying to sound busy and important. Grabbing breakfast as they rush out to their exciting job! Busy, busy, busy! Grabbing lunch because they are so in demand professionally that they only have five minutes! Busy, busy, busy!
Regularsizedrudy · 17/02/2022 23:46

“It's just that you are not picking anything up. You are buying something.”

The pizzas don’t levitate out the shop though.. you.. pick them up.

I feel like I’ve slipped into an alternate universe on this thread.

Bitofachinwag · 17/02/2022 23:46

A piece 'a' pizza Regular
