What job or career would you aim for if you could do ANYTHING?

Posting as think it might be an interesting discussion, and keen to hear ideas I may not have though of.

I need something to aim for and throw myself into to distract away from health problems and infertility. (My health means plenty of jobs are unsuitable for me personally, but still would enjoy reading about other people's ambitions and adventures)

What would you do if you were free to do anything?

NASA, or anything to do with space. Not nearly clever enough, but if we are dreaming Grin

Something seriously well paid that involved doing very little! But seriously, if I was creative and talented I would work in fashion.

TottersBlankly · 17/02/2022 13:27

I’m prepared to call myself ‘creative’, and I’m obsessed with clothes - but I don’t think I’d get on with fashion people. So I’ve always kept it as a hobby and never aspired to more.

@Hoolihan

Actually I've always thought that the best job ever is to be a non-recognisable member of a very big/successful band e.g. the drummer in Radiohead. The creativity, camaraderie, thrill of live performance, satisfaction of success and huge wealth without being hassled on the street or papped coming out of the pub. The fortune without the fame.

So that's what I'd do.

One of my other fantasy jobs is being a roadie for a rock band. Can I join you as crew? Smile

Something well paid, flexible and where I could cuddle puppies and kittens all day

SnowySnowSnow · 17/02/2022 20:40

Air traffic controller. It’s what I wanted to do at 17 but I was too afraid to leave home to do it. Pursued my other childhood dream career instead and it sucks.

Jellykat · 17/02/2022 20:45

I'm a seamstress / cleaner / retail assistant / furniture restorer..
I'd easily give up the last 3 tomorrow, if i had the space and finances to design and screen print fabric..

Personal shopper/stylist in Selfridges.

@TottersBlankly

Are there really no bursaries, grants, Arts Council type funding sources for crafts like jewellery making?

How do people get into it if they’re not millionaires?

Go to an arts college, get a degree in design or something related, get taken on as an apprentice somewhere and work your way up to jeweller to the stars. Boodles offer graduate schemes I believe.

LadyAnglerFish Hawa Abdi sounds like an amazing woman. I would love to be able do what she did but don't have her courage or skill

XenoBitch · 17/02/2022 22:13

Working in SFX for TV/film. I would love to see my name on a big screen in the credits.

WhyPaulMemory · 17/02/2022 22:28

Either a concert pianist or working in an animal sanctuary. I play the piano but could never get above mediocre, I’d love to be able to play anything, it would be so fulfilling. In fact, if I could just play at that level and not have to have an audience, that would be perfect!

Animal sanctuary, I’m hoping when I retire I will be able to volunteer with animals in some way. I think I prefer animals to people!

Not necessarily a translator but to work/operate in a language other than my mother tongue.

Doctor - if I weren't so squeamish... Genetics or gynae
